Book Bah Ethics in Light of Scripture Virtues and divine commandments

Download or read book Bah Ethics in Light of Scripture Virtues and divine commandments written by Udo Schaefer and published by Udo Schaefer. This book was released on 2007 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a fundamental discrepancy between man as he is and man as he could be, if only he recognized his true being and purpose. Ethics is the discipline by which man can understand how he can pass from the first condition to the second. Udo Schaefer's Baha'i Ethics in Light of Scripture is an attempt to analyse the underlying structures and detect the interior architecture of the Baha'i moral system and is a step towards developing a Baha'i moral theology. Doctrinal Fundamentals, the first of two volumes, provides a historical overview of the Baha'i Faith, a systematic survey of it doctrines and an overview of the origin and derivation of moral values. It considers the metaphysical nature of human beings and human responsibilities, looks at reason and conscience, and explores liberty and its limits. Schaefer's second volume deals with concrete values - the virtues, divine commandments and principles of social ethics from a Baha'i perspective."

He who activates the bodhi mind to enlighten himself and others is a Bodhisattva, who must accumulate merit and develop wisdom on the Bodhisattva Way to Buddhahood. This book, Rulu’s fourth, presents three sutras in English, all translated from texts in the Chinese Buddhist Canon. Sutra 1 is the Sutra of the Garland of a Bodhisattva’s Primary Karmas. Sutra 2 is chapter 7 of the Sutra of the Profound Secret Unraveled. It describes the four purities and the eleven parts of training, which rule the holy grounds, and explains the ten paramitas. Sutra 3 is chapter 26 of the Mahavaipulya Sutra of Buddha Adornment. It presents in detail a Bodhisattva’s training on the Ten Grounds, his spiritual attainments, and his worldly requitals. Book excerpt: Named a Summer Must Read by Wall Street Journal, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Entertainment Weekly, Glamour, Esquire, Bustle, Town & Country, Good Housekeeping, Refinery29, and more “[Hoby] might have just written the defining New York City novel of our fraught, socially anxious, and politically tumultuous times.” —Interview “Intense and addictive.” —New York Times A powerful novel of youth, desire, and moral conflict, in which a young man is seduced by the mirage of glamour—at terrible cost. Arriving in New York City for an internship at an elite but fading magazine, Luca feels invisible: smart but not worldly, privileged but broke, and uncertain how to navigate a new era of social change. Among his peers is Zara, a young Black woman whose sharp wit and frank views on injustice create tension in the office, especially in the wake of a shock election that’s irrevocably destabilized American life. In the months that follow, as the streets of New York fill with pink-hatted protesters and the magazine faces a changing of the guard, Luca is taken under the wing of an attractive and wealthy white couple—Paula, a prominent artist, and Jason, her filmmaker husband—whose lifestyle he finds both alien and alluring. With the coming of summer, Luca is swept up in the fever dream of their marriage, accepting an invitation to join the couple and their children at their beach house, and nurturing an infatuation both frustrating and dangerous. Only after he learns of a spectacular tragedy in the city he has left behind does he begin to realize the moral consequences of his allegiances. In language at once lyrical and incisive, Virtue offers a clear-eyed, unsettling story of the allure of privilege and the costs of complacency, from a writer of astonishing acuity and vision.

Download or read book The Triple Path written by James Kenneth Rogers and published by The Church of the West. This book was released on 2020-06-21 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a crisis of meaning in the modern world. How many of us yearn for something, without knowing exactly what? We've lost something, straying in a world of distractions. Society's increasing secularization has stripped the sacred from our lives and culture, jettisoning much that is bright and good in exchange for dark, dull substitutes. Every human society has had religion — has needed religion. It is foolish to think ours is any different. But at the same time, the ancient cosmologies and doctrines of the world's major religions appear to be in ever-greater conflict with modern discoveries, making traditional religion feel increasingly dissatisfying and irrelevant to growing numbers of people. The Triple Path offers a solution—it revives the most ancient branch of Christianity, Adoptionism, while harmonizing and reconciling our great Western heritage with modernity. It weaves together the ancient wisdom of the ages with modern insights, but with an emphasis on keeping as much as possible of the teachings and practices of Western tradition and faith. It beckons to us, inviting us to draw closer to God by seeking Wisdom, practicing Virtue, and laboring with Hope. When you honestly appraise yourself and your life, could you be aiming higher? Perhaps existence is calling to you to do more, to be more. Perhaps the Triple Path is calling to you to take up the challenge and embark on a spiritual quest. Test its fruits for yourself. Rediscover the sacred. Come back to religion and God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Education systems are failing their societies' is the message often conveyed by families and young people to governments and media today. The dismal state of a country's education system is said to be a reflection of the condition of the society it is meant to serve. What are we teaching young people today? Do we understand what they need to learn for their ultimate well being? In traditional societies, education was the means by which knowledge of the Divine Principle and its relation to the human soul was transmitted to young generations. Addressing a theme rarely discussed in philosophical and educational circles, this unique volume attempts to rediscover the truths and values engrained in traditional education systems. Some of the articles also go to the heart of the woes of modern public education systems."--Publisher's website.

Book The Buddhist Roots of Zhu Xi s Philosophical Thought

Download or read book The Buddhist Roots of Zhu Xi s Philosophical Thought written by John Makeham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zhu Xi (1130-1200) is the most influential Neo-Confucian philosopher and arguably the most important Chinese philosopher of the past millennium, both in terms of his legacy and for the sophistication of his systematic philosophy. The Buddhist Roots of Zhu Xi's Philosophical Thought combines in a single study two major areas of Chinese philosophy that are rarely tackled together: Chinese Buddhist philosophy and Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucian philosophy. Despite Zhu Xi's importance as a philosopher, the role of Buddhist thought and philosophy in the construction of his systematic philosophy remains poorly understood. What aspects of Buddhism did he criticize and why? Was his engagement limited to criticism (informed or otherwise) or did Zhu also appropriate and repurpose Buddhist ideas to develop his own thought? If Zhu's philosophical repertoire incorporated conceptual structures and problematics that are marked by a distinct Buddhist pedigree, what implications does this have for our understanding of his philosophical project? The five chapters that make up The Buddhist Roots of Zhu Xi's Philosophical Thought present a rich and complex portrait of the Buddhist roots of Zhu Xi's philosophical thought. The scholarship is meticulous, the analysis is rigorous, and the philosophical insights are fresh. Collectively, the chapters illuminate a greatly expanded range of the intellectual resources Zhu incorporated into his philosophical thought, demonstrating the vital role that models derived from Buddhism played in his philosophical repertoire. In doing so, they provide new perspectives on what Zhu Xi was trying to achieve as a philosopher, by repurposing ideas from Buddhism. They also make significant and original contributions to our understanding of core concepts, debates and conceptual structures that shaped the development of philosophy in East Asia over the past millennium.
