The Populist Radical Right in Central and Eastern Europe is the first comparative study to focus on the ideology, impact, and electoral performance of this party family in the region. The book advances a series of arguments concerning the context and text of these parties, and systematically analyses the supply-side and demand-side of populist radical right politics. Whilst populist radical right parties in Central and Eastern Europe maintain broad similarities with their West European counterparts, they come across as a distinct phenomenon worthy of study in their own right. Parties like Ataka (Bulgaria), Jobbik (Hungary), and the SNS (Slovakia) resort to historical legacies and contextual idiosyncrasies to frame their ideology; interact with other parties over a number of policy areas; and ultimately compete for public office on the basis of their nativist agenda. The book provides a novel framework for the analysis of different aspects of populist radical right politics, notably enhancing the understanding of this phenomenon by means of primary data such as personal interviews with party leaders and original expert surveys. Regulation of hate speech exposes underlining and sometimes invisible societal values such as security and public order, equality and non-discrimination, human dignity, and other democratic vital interests. The spread of hatred and hate speech has intensified in many corners of the world over the last decade and its regulation presents a conundrum for many democracies. This book presents a three-prong theory describing three different but complementary models of hate speech regulation which allows stakeholders to better address this phenomenon. It examines international and national legal frameworks and related case law as well as pertinent scholarly literature review to highlight this development. After a period of an absence of free speech during communism, post-communist democracies have sought to build a framework for the exercise of free speech while protecting public goods such as liberty, equality and human dignity. The three-prong theory is applied to identify public goods and values underlining the regulation of hate speech in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, two countries that share a political, sociological, and legal history, as an example of the differing approaches to hate speech regulation in post-communist societies due to divergent social values, despite identical legal frameworks. Esther Elizabeth Adaire analyses the electoral success of the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) party in 2017, the growing presence of PEGIDA on German streets, and the anti-COVID lockdown protests led by conspiracy theorist groups such as Querdenken which have taken aback liberal onlookers for whom Germany's robust culture of Holocaust consciousness is supposed to provide a panacea against neo-Nazism. Adaire examines how, since unification, the intellectual Neue Rechte has increasingly destabilized the foundations of historical memory and lesson-learning in Germany, often doing so in the pages of mainstream conservative publications. Neo-Nazi Postmodern convincingly contends that far-right intellectuals joined by notable left-wing apostates who brought with them an anti-establishment critique borrowed from the language of postmodernism have since the early 1990s excused and justified an increasingly violent far-right youth scene, even becoming leaders of this scene themselves. The book therefore traces the development of today's German far-right throughout several stages, notable scandals, and the ongoing destabilization of memory and truth from unification onwards, showing how previously disparate groups such as neo-Nazis, Neue Rechte intellectuals, and political fringe parties merged over time. This far-right scene, Adaire adeptly demonstrates, has come to embody what the historian Walter Laqueur once dubbed 'Postmodern Terrorism': a mixture of cell-based terror structures, reliance on Internet technologies for organizational purposes, and the sowing of epistemic chaos via informational warfare.
