Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of increasingly heterogeneous societies, matters of identity politics and the links between collective identities and national, racial, or ethnic intolerance have assumed dramatic significance - and have stimulated an enormous body of research and literature which rarely transcends the limitations of a national perspective, however, and thus reproduces the limitations of its own topic. Comparative attempts are rare, if not altogether absent. Identity and Intolerance attempts to shift the focus toward comparison in order to show how German and American societies have historically confronted matters of national, racial, and ethnic inclusion and exclusion. This perspective sheds light on the specific links between the cultural construction of nationhood and otherness, the political modes of integration and exclusion, and the social conditions of tolerance and intolerance. The contributors also attempt to integrate the approaches offered by the history of ideas and ideologies, social history, and discourse theory.

From the American slave trade to Nazi Germany, racist thoughts and intolerance of foreign cultures have resulted in violence and war. Book The European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance ECRI

Download or read book The European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance ECRI written by Lanna Hollo and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed assessment of the first 15 years of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance. ECRI's terms of reference deriving from the Vienna Plan of Action were to "review member States' legislation, policies and other measures to combat racism, xenophobia, antisemitism and intolerance, and their effectiveness" and "propose further action at local, national and European level". This book examines how ECRI has developed and fulfilled this mandate. It begins by looking at ECRI's foundational years, which were pivotal to its future character, approach, working methods and activities. It then describes and closely examines the evolution of the three main prongs of ECRI's work programme - country-by-country work, general themes and relations with civil society. Through this assessment, the author reveals the detailed, far-reaching and progressive body of jurisprudence that ECRI has produced - constituting a useful road map for actors seeking to address problems of racism and discrimination. The work also examines ECRI's contribution to legal standards to protect individuals against racism and discrimination and its impact on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. It concludes with a discussion of ECRI's opinion on three important contemporary issues in European anti-racism work: positive measures, racist expression and the current racist climate.

Book Understanding Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life

Download or read book Understanding Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late Life written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the population of older Americans grows, it is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. Differences in health by racial and ethnic status could be increasingly consequential for health policy and programs. Such differences are not simply a matter of education or ability to pay for health care. For instance, Asian Americans and Hispanics appear to be in better health, on a number of indicators, than White Americans, despite, on average, lower socioeconomic status. The reasons are complex, including possible roles for such factors as selective migration, risk behaviors, exposure to various stressors, patient attitudes, and geographic variation in health care. This volume, produced by a multidisciplinary panel, considers such possible explanations for racial and ethnic health differentials within an integrated framework. It provides a concise summary of available research and lays out a research agenda to address the many uncertainties in current knowledge. It recommends, for instance, looking at health differentials across the life course and deciphering the links between factors presumably producing differentials and biopsychosocial mechanisms that lead to impaired health.

Book excerpt: Shades of Intolerance: How Capitalism and Terrorism Shape Discrimination examines issues related to power dynamics and diversity within the United States and globally. The book is designed to enhance readers' understanding of primary motivations for prejudice and discrimination and how they manifest in contemporary society. Over the course of 11 chapters, readers examine the implications of capitalism and terrorism on issues of discrimination, diversity, and equality. Readers learn about economic determinism, socioeconomic discrimination, racial formation, modern views of feminism, and discrimination based on sexual orientation. The timely issue of immigration is explored, providing historical information regarding significant waves of immigration, as well as contemporary views on the subject. Additional chapters explore assimilation and pluralism, theories on discrimination, nationalism, authoritarianism, the Black Lives Matter movement, Brexit, and more. The second edition includes new coverage regarding discrimination issues related to sexual orientation, sex, and gender identity. Fresh graphs and figures have been added, as well as a new glossary of terms. With its awareness of how discrimination is also a response to terrorism, Shades of Intolerance moves beyond the proven motivations for discrimination and brings the conversation solidly into the present moment. This thoughtful text is appropriate for courses in race and racism, diversity, and responsive social policy. Chuck Baker earned his Ph.D. in global affairs from Rutgers University. He is a faculty member at Delaware County Community College, where he teaches classes in social problems, social psychology, marriage and family, and experiences in diversity. He is a coauthor of the textbooks Globalization: A Text for the Social Sciences and Understanding Sociology, as well as a past recipient of the Lindback Award, which recognizes distinguished teaching excellence.
