Book excerpt: Les trois premiers livres de cette collection traitent directement des origines ou du sens des appellations des rues et lieux-dits de Bayonne, Anglet, et Biarritz qui ont quelque ancienneté. Ces dénominations sont, en très grande majorité, issues de langue, de la culture et de l’histoire de ce « carcan » (les environs) ; et celles-ci sont gasconnes depuis environ l’an 1000. Sauf dans la période moderne, elles ont été presque toujours le fait des populations elles-mêmes, pour les besoins de leur vie de tous les jours ; elles s’ajoutent donc, visiblement et indubitablement, à la valeur probante des sources historiques. Tout le monde n’accède pas facilement aux ouvrages des érudits, ni aux premiers recueils des décisions et contrats qui forment les textes de base : « livre d’or » des évêques de Bayonne, « livre des établissements », « délibérations du corps de ville » et autres, par ailleurs abondamment cités dans la collection. Mais ces noms de rues et lieux-dits (la toponymie). Chacun peut ainsi se pénétrer des « racines » de l’agglomération et du Val d’Adour, des « arradits ». Et l’on découvrira notamment dans ces livres de véritables inconnues de nos jours : le « pont matou », c’est le « pont principal » depuis 1125 ; le « rocher de la Vierge » et la « côte des Basques », ne s'appellent ainsi que depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle : c’étaient « lo Cucurlon » (lou cucurloun), « la costa de pernauton » (le coste de Pernaoutoun). Les cinq cantons (Anglet, Bayonne, environs...), ce sont les « 5 angles », ou « 5 coins » (cinc cantouns), le plus souvent depuis de nombreux siècles...

They are no longer simply entrepreneurs managing their own skills but are the enterprises themselves. The artist–enterprises thus find themselves at the confluence of two dynamics of production—artistic and economic: artistic because they invent new expressions and meanings; and economic because these expressions must be supported by monetary values on the market. The artistic dynamic is part of a long process of artistic enhancement and only an artist can say whether it has reached the point of presentation or equilibrium. The economic dynamic is dependent on the constant endorsement of artists' works by the market to ensure their survival as artist–enterprises. The tension created by this disparity is further aggravated by another tension: the need to overcome a number of risks so that artist–enterprises can progress. This book will be of special interest to artists, managers, students, professionals, and researchers in the fields of the arts, creativity, economics, and development. Book excerpt: In Socialism of Fools, Michele Battini focuses on the critical moment during the Enlightenment in which anti-Jewish stereotypes morphed into a sophisticated, modern social anti-Semitism. He recovers the potent anti-Jewish, anticapitalist propaganda that cemented the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in the European mind and connects it to the atrocities that characterized the Jewish experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the eighteenth century, counter-Enlightenment intellectuals and intransigent Catholic writers singled out Jews for conspiring to exploit self-sustaining markets and the liberal state. These ideas spread among socialist and labor movements in the nineteenth century and intensified during the Long Depression of the 1870s. Anti-Jewish anticapitalism then migrated to the Habsburg Empire with the Christian Social Party; to Germany with the Anti-Semitic Leagues; to France with the nationalist movements; and to Italy, where Revolutionary Syndicalists made anti-Jewish anticapitalism the basis of an alliance with the nationalists. Exemplified best in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous document that "leaked" Jewish plans to conquer the world, the Jewish-conspiracy myth inverts reality and creates a perverse relationship to historical and judicial truth. Isolating the intellectual roots of this phenomenon and its contemporary resonances, Battini shows us why, so many decades after the Holocaust, Jewish people continue to be a powerful political target.

The imagining of liberation and the potential post-Vichy state, lay at the heart of resistance strategy. Their transformation into policy at liberation forms the basis of an enquiry that reveals a society which, while split deeply at the political level, found considerable agreement over questions of race, the family and gender. This is explained through a new analysis of republican assimilation which insists that gender was as important a factor as nationality or ethnicity. A new concept of the 'long liberation' provides a framework for understanding the continuing influence of the liberation in post-war France, where scientific planning came to the fore, but whose exponents were profoundly imbued with reductive beliefs about Jews and women that were familiar during Vichy.
