The world geopolitical situation, which was already hot with the Ukraine vs Russia war, is now getting hotter with the outbreak of the Hamas vs Israel military confrontation. At the time this article was written, around 8,000 people had died in this conflict, most of whom were civilians in Gaza. Israel imposed “collective punishment” by dropping thousands of bombs on the narrow, densely populated area to destroy Hamas bases. In this asymmetric war, the biggest victims are not Hamas fighters, but Palestinian civilians. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a simple conflict. Apart from the territorial dispute between the two nations being quite complicated, the involvement of many other countries makes this conflict in the Middle East not easy to resolve. In addition to military confrontations such as Ukraine vs Russia and Hamas vs Israel, there is secretly other battle going on. This is not a battle with military force but a technological and trade war between the United States and China. This conflict is popularly referred to as the “chip war.” This small chip turns out to have very strategic value. Now you could say that all electronic devices produced throughout the world involve the use of chips or semiconductor technology. In fact, the application of future technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), really requires various sophisticated chips. So, this “chip war” is not just an ordinary US vs China conflict but a conflict with global dimensions. This “chip war” will affect various aspects of life in other countries. For those of you who are interested in defense technology, we provide articles about various weapons used by Israel and Hamas in their recent military confrontations. When this article was written, fighting was continuing so it is possible that there are still other types of weapons that will be used by both parties. We hope that Armory Reborn friends can enjoy all these articles. Satrio Arismunandar Editor in chief

On October 5, 2023, our Indonesian National Army (TNI) will be exactly 78 years old. Times have changed a lot, the geopolitical constellation has changed, the strategic environment has changed. So, the threats and challenges faced by the TNI have also changed. In this regard, all Armory Reborn editors wish the TNI a happy birthday. Hopefully the TNI can continue to develop, become more advanced and able to overcome all these challenges. In relation to changes in geopolitics and the strategic environment, the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, has an important meaning. India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is considered successful in taking advantage of the G20 Summit moment to raise India’s image as a voice for the interests of developing countries, which are usually called the Global South. As was the case at last year’s G20 Summit in Bali, Vladimir Putin, the leader of Russia, was not present in person at the big event of the New Delhi G20 Summit. Russia is being targeted by the United States and its allies because of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine, which led to a protracted war on mainland Europe. This war drastically reduced Russia’s weapons reserves. So, Putin’s meeting with North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un has attracted the attention of observers. Russia and North Korea are both being ostracized by the West. It is not surprising that Putin and Kim Jong-un help each other, including with arms and military technology transactions. For those of you who are interested in defense technology, we provide an article about submarine crew rescue vehicles. The Indonesian Navy had a bitter and sad experience with the sinking of the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine two years ago in the Bali Strait. At that time, the entire crew of the submarine died. In 2021, Indonesia did not have adequate equipment to carry out emergency rescue operations for submarine crews. So now Indonesia will buy a sophisticated submarine rescue vehicle made by U.K. We hope that Armory Reborn friends can enjoy all these articles. Satrio Arismunandar Editor in chief

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WATERMELON JUICE Happy New Year 2024! Happy to meet again, loyal friends of Armory Reborn! Hope you are all healthy, happy and enthusiastic. Entering the new year 2024, the international community is still concerned about the ongoing war in Europe and the Middle East. In Europe, the Ukraine vs Russia war has not yet shown a clear solution. In the Middle East, the Hamas (Palestine) vs Israel war is still not over. Israel’s attacks on civilians in the Gaza Strip are very severe and concerning. Israel’s plan to “expel” Palestinian civilians from Gaza has become a new problem. Meanwhile, the number of civilian casualties in Gaza has reached more than 21,000. So, Armory Reborn presents a special article highlighting world conditions in 2024. Apart from geopolitical conflicts, 2024 is an important year because several countries will hold general elections this year. Taiwan’s presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place on January 13, 2024. Competition between presidential candidates is quite tight, amidst Taiwan’s economic decline and tensions in Taipei’s relations with Beijing. Although the issue of relations with China is still significant, socio-economic issues are likely to influence the results of this election. Apart from that, there is a book review that reviews Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWF). The role of SWF has been recognized as increasingly important in recent years. SWF can play a role in supporting infrastructure development in developing countries. Unfortunately, Indonesia does not seem to have built its own SWF base. Indonesia is still lagging behind neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. For those of you who like military technology, we present an article about the EMB-314 Super Tucano attack aircraft. This aircraft, produced by Embraer Brazil, is quite popular in the global market. Unfortunately, two Super Tucano aircraft belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed due to an accident while carrying out flight training last year. We hope that Armory Reborn friends can enjoy all these articles. Satrio Arismunandar Editor in chief

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Happy to meet again, Armory Reborn friends! May you all always be healthy, happy and enthusiastic. This September is a special month. Indonesia is hosting the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, 5-7 September 2023. As Chair of ASEAN this year, Indonesia carries the theme ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth. This theme underlines ASEAN's important role for the regional and world economy. This ASEAN Summit was not only attended by ASEAN leaders. But also present were the leaders of partner countries, such as China, India, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the Russian Federation and the United States. Last August, President Jokowi also attended the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. However, Indonesia still seems to be considering the pros and cons of joining BRICS. Indonesia's position is increasingly central in world economics and geopolitics. Indonesia's central position in the Southeast Asia region is related to the legacy that US President Joe Biden will leave behind. The US presidential election will take place in 2024. However, as his term draws to a close, Biden still has not demonstrated a solid strategy to attract many Asian countries, especially Southeast Asia, to the US camp. In the economic realm, the US does not have an effective strategy to counter China's influence in Southeast Asian countries. US hegemony also faces serious challenges with the increasing multipolar world order, namely the BRICS. Meanwhile, Indonesia is currently facing a potential crisis that must be mitigated, namely the rice crisis. India's action to stop rice exports, coupled with a decrease in food production due to the El Nino phenomenon and climate change in Southeast Asian countries, could threaten Indonesia's food security. For those of you who are fond of weapons technology, we provide articles about the various combat aircraft that will be acquired by Indonesia, such as the Rafale and F-15EX. These 4.5 generation aircraft are compared to the F-35 Lightning II, the 5.0 generation aircraft that is the US mainstay. Apart from that, there are other articles. For example, an article about the United States election. There is an assessment of Republican Party cadres who might run and compete in the US presidential election. We hope that Armory, Reborn friends can enjoy it. Satrio Arismunandar Editor in chief
Download or read book He Who is Made Lord Empire Class and Race in Postwar Singapore written by Muhammad Suhail bin Mohamed Yazid and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1959, the British established the office of Yang di-Pertuan Negara (He Who is Made Lord) to replace the colonial governorship and represent Queen Elizabeth II in Singapore. Muhammad Suhail explores the divergent attempts to invest meaning in the Yang di-Pertuan Negara. In doing so, he weaves a rich story about the contesting ideas of sovereignty during the global age of decolonization. He Who is Made Lord is a captivating take on Singapore’s emergence as a postcolonial nation, providing a gateway into the island’s past as part of the Malay World, the British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations. "The Yang di-Pertuan Negara is a subject that has received only passing mentions in the Singapore Story. This book is the first detailed study to reveal not only the politics of its creation but also the cultural significance of the office. By delving into its multifaceted meanings, this insightful account offers readers a fascinating treatise on the office’s connection with the momentous final years of British rule in the colony and Singapore’s brief interlude in Malaysia." -- Associate Professor Albert Lau, Department of History, National University of Singapore "The end of the British Empire wrought considerable change across the globe, but it also left many legacies and questions such as what or who would replace the omnipotent Crown. He Who is Made Lord examines the neglected but fascinating story of how Singapore grappled with this issue, which was more delicate, nuanced and far reaching than most supposed. Muhammad Suhail has made an original, well-researched, and valuable study of the position of Head of State in Singapore during the last stages of colonialism and shows vividly that far from being of ceremonial or administrative interest, it touched on wider and deeper issues in Singaporean and Southeast Asian history and society, reflecting tensions of identity and hopes for the future." -- Dr Harshan Kumarasingham, School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh "In this ground-breaking book, Muhammad Suhail has meticulously scoured, scrutinized, and synthesized archival official records, newspaper articles, government publications, pictures, and websites to peel and expose the many layers of the hitherto overlooked office of the Yang di-Pertuan Negara of Singapore to reveal the contradictions, contestations, and constructions of the created office in the context of the tumultuous period of decolonization. Suhail also has laid bare the complex personality of the man who held this office, Yusof Ishak, exposing the myriad of faces, appearances, and roles he represented and was made to represent, appreciating his triumphs and weaknesses, but most importantly, humanizing him." -- Associate Professor Sher Banu A.L. Khan, Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore
Download or read book Overcoming Passion for Race in Malaysia Cultural Studies written by David C.L. Lim and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcoming Passion examines the passion for race in contemporary Malaysia. Broadly the essays look at the disjunction between the falsity of race as a scientific category and the entrenched belief that race determines one's rightful identity. They probe the ways in which individual minds and institutions of power fail or refuse to recognise and act in accordance with the knowledge that race exists only insofar as its existence is sustained by the believer's belief in it. The contributors draw from a burgeoning but under-examined archive of Malaysia-related social texts, ranging from media and technological discourse, popular culture and literary production to historical writings, produced originally in English, Malay and Mandarin Chinese.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how technologies of media, medicine, law and governance enable and constrain the mobility of bodies within geographies of space and race. Each chapter describes and critiques the ways in which contemporary technologies produce citizens according to their statistical risk or value in an atmosphere of generalised security, both in relation to categories of race, and within the new possibilities for locating and managing bodies in space. The topics covered include: drone warfare, the global distribution of HIV-prevention drugs, racial profiling in airports, Indigenous sovereignty, consumer lifestyle apps and their ecological and labour costs, and anti-aging therapies. Security, Race, Biopower makes innovative contributions to multiple disciplines and identifies emerging social and political concerns with security, race and risk that invite further scholarly attention. It will be of great interest to scholars and students in disciplinary fields including Media and Communication, Geography, Science and Technology Studies, Political Science and Sociology.

Download or read book Seeing Beauty Sensing Race in Transnational Indonesia written by L. Ayu Saraswati and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-03-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Indonesia, light skin color has been desirable throughout recorded history. Seeing Beauty, Sensing Race explores Indonesia’s changing beauty ideals and traces them to a number of influences: first to ninth-century India and some of the oldest surviving Indonesian literary works; then, a thousand years later, to the impact of Dutch colonialism and the wartime occupation of Japan; and finally, in the post-colonial period, to the popularity of American culture. The book shows how the transnational circulation of people, images, and ideas have shaped and shifted discourses and hierarchies of race, gender, skin color, and beauty in Indonesia. The author employs “affect” theories and feminist cultural studies as a lens through which to analyze a vast range of materials, including the Old Javanese epic poem Ramayana, archival materials, magazine advertisements, commercial products, and numerous interviews with Indonesian women. The book offers a rich repertoire of analytical and theoretical tools that allow readers to rethink issues of race and gender in a global context and understand how feelings and emotions—Western constructs as well as Indian, Javanese, and Indonesian notions such as rasa and malu—contribute to and are constitutive of transnational and gendered processes of racialization. Saraswati argues that it is how emotions come to be attached to certain objects and how they circulate that shape the “emotionscape” of white beauty in Indonesia. Her ground-breaking work is a nuanced theoretical exploration of the ways in which representations of beauty and the emotions they embody travel geographically and help shape attitudes and beliefs toward race and gender in a transnational world.
