Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20th Century has been marked by enormous change in terms of how we define race. In large part, we have thrown out the antiquated notions of the 1800s, giving way to a more realistic, sociocultural view of the world. The United States is, perhaps more than any other industrialized country, distinguished by the size and diversity of its racial and ethnic minority populations. Current trends promise that these features will endure. Fifty years from now, there will most likely be no single majority group in the United States. How will we fare as a nation when race-based issues such as immigration, job opportunities, and affirmative action are already so contentious today? In America Becoming, leading scholars and commentators explore past and current trends among African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans in the context of a white majority. This volume presents the most up-to-date findings and analysis on racial and social dynamics, with recommendations for ongoing research. It examines compelling issues in the field of race relations, including: Race and ethnicity in criminal justice. Demographic and social trends for Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Trends in minority-owned businesses. Wealth, welfare, and racial stratification. Residential segregation and the meaning of "neighborhood." Disparities in educational test scores among races and ethnicities. Health and development for minority children, adolescents, and adults. Race and ethnicity in the labor market, including the role of minorities in America's military. Immigration and the dynamics of race and ethnicity. The changing meaning of race. Changing racial attitudes. This collection of papers, compiled and edited by distinguished leaders in the behavioral and social sciences, represents the most current literature in the field. Volume 1 covers demographic trends, immigration, racial attitudes, and the geography of opportunity. Volume 2 deals with the criminal justice system, the labor market, welfare, and health trends, Both books will be of great interest to educators, scholars, researchers, students, social scientists, and policymakers.

Book Racial Formation in the United States

Download or read book Racial Formation in the United States written by Michael Omi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years since the publication of the Second Edition and more than thirty years since the publication of the original book, Racial Formation in the United States now arrives with each chapter radically revised and rewritten by authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant, but the overall purpose and vision of this classic remains the same: Omi and Winant provide an account of how concepts of race are created and transformed, how they become the focus of political conflict, and how they come to shape and permeate both identities and institutions. The steady journey of the U.S. toward a majority nonwhite population, the ongoing evisceration of the political legacy of the early post-World War II civil rights movement, the initiation of the ‘war on terror’ with its attendant Islamophobia, the rise of a mass immigrants rights movement, the formulation of race/class/gender ‘intersectionality’ theories, and the election and reelection of a black President of the United States are some of the many new racial conditions Racial Formation now covers.

Book Rethinking Race and Ethnicity in Research Methods

Download or read book Rethinking Race and Ethnicity in Research Methods written by John H Stanfield II and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original work demonstrates the new ways in which particular research methodologies are used, valued and critiqued in the field of race and ethnic studies. Contributing authors discuss the ways in which their personal and professional histories and experiences lead them to select and use particular methodologies over the course of their careers. They then provide the intellectual histories, strengths and weaknesses of these methods as applied to issues of race and ethnicity and discuss the ethical, practical, and epistemological issues that have influenced and challenged their methodological principles and applications. Through these rigorous self-examinations, this text presents a dynamic example of how scholars engage both research methodologies and issues of social justice and ethics. This volume is a successor to Stanfield’s landmark Race and Ethnicity in Research Methods.

Book Ethnic and Racial Diversity in Post war II America 1945 1960

Download or read book Ethnic and Racial Diversity in Post war II America 1945 1960 written by Souad Hamidi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with Ethnic and Racial Diversity in Post-war II American society between 1945 and 1960. In a multicultural society, some clashes may occur around issues like assimilation and multiculturalism, the sharing of the welfare in a prosperous society and the equal versus unequal life chances. These ethnic groups have contributed in a positive way in making America a world super power. It is said that diversity is enrichment to the country as a whole. Nevertheless, some people warn that it may bring about issues such as which language they are going to speak and whether or not they should retain their specific markers. It is true that many Americans have chosen to assimilate and become part of the "melting pot" while others think that it is just a myth and that the pot (America) did not include every one especially the people of colour. Some people claim that racism and discrimination still exist in America but is less prevalent and apparent like in the past. Martin Luther King‟s dream has not only become true but an African American President, Barrak Obama was elected. In his speech about race, he put it "out of many, we are truly one".

Book Race and U S Foreign Policy from 1900 Through World War II

Download or read book Race and U S Foreign Policy from 1900 Through World War II written by Michael L. Krenn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the concept of "race" The term "race," which originally denoted genealogical or class identity, has in the comparatively brief span of 300 years taken on an entirely new meaning. In the wake of the Enlightenment it came to be applied to social groups. This ideological transformation coupled with a dogmatic insistence that the groups so designated were natural, and not socially created, gave birth to the modern notion of "races" as genetically distinct entities. The results of this view were the encoding of "race" and "racial" hierarchies in law, literature, and culture. How "racial" categories facilitate social control The articles in the series demonstrate that the classification of humans according to selected physical characteristics was an arbitrary decision that was not based on valid scientific method. They also examine the impact of colonialism on the propagation of the concept and note that "racial" categorization is a powerful social force that is often used to promote the interests of dominant social groups. Finally, the collection surveys how laws based on "race" have been enacted around the world to deny power to minority groups. A multidisciplinary resource This collection of outstanding articles brings multiple perspectives to bear on race theory and draws on a wider ranger of periodicals than even the largest library usually holds. Even if all the articles were available on campus, chances are that a student would have to track them down in several libraries and microfilm collections. Providing, of course, that no journals were reserved for graduate students, out for binding, or simply missing. This convenient set saves students substantial time and effort by making available all the key articles in one reliable source. Authoritative commentary The series editor has put together a balanced selection of the most significant works, accompanied by expert commentary. A general introduction gives important background information and outlines fundamental issues, current scholarship, and scholarly controversies. Introductions to individual volumes put the articles in context and draw attention to germinal ideas and major shifts in the field. After reading the material, even a beginning student will have an excellent grasp of the basics of the subject.

Book Recovering Racist 2nd Edition A Comprehensive and Fair Minded Attempt to Discuss a Deeply Discomforting Subject

Download or read book Recovering Racist 2nd Edition A Comprehensive and Fair Minded Attempt to Discuss a Deeply Discomforting Subject written by Peter Boone Schwethelm and published by Recovering Racist. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our nation continues to suffer from race-related disharmony, and as long as we continue yelling at each other with closed minds rather than listening to each other with open hearts, I see no real reason to expect us to overcome this foundational American flaw. This book considers racism from a wide variety of angles and points of view without condoning racism or (overly harshly) condemning racists, and this (relatively) "neutral" approach could be precisely what our country needs in order to shift the tone of our national racial dialogue from toxic to therapeutic.
