Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the problematic relationship between education, social justice and the State, against the background of comparative education research. The book critiques the status quo of stratified school systems, and the unequal distribution of cultural capital and value added schooling. The authors address one of today’s most pressing questions: Are social, economic and cultural divisions between the nations, between school sectors, between schools and between students growing or declining?

Download or read book On Uncertain Graphs written by Arijit Khan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale, highly interconnected networks, which are often modeled as graphs, pervade both our society and the natural world around us. Uncertainty, on the other hand, is inherent in the underlying data due to a variety of reasons, such as noisy measurements, lack of precise information needs, inference and prediction models, or explicit manipulation, e.g., for privacy purposes. Therefore, uncertain, or probabilistic, graphs are increasingly used to represent noisy linked data in many emerging application scenarios, and they have recently become a hot topic in the database and data mining communities. Many classical algorithms such as reachability and shortest path queries become #P-complete and, thus, more expensive over uncertain graphs. Moreover, various complex queries and analytics are also emerging over uncertain networks, such as pattern matching, information diffusion, and influence maximization queries. In this book, we discuss the sources of uncertain graphs and their applications, uncertainty modeling, as well as the complexities and algorithmic advances on uncertain graphs processing in the context of both classical and emerging graph queries and analytics. We emphasize the current challenges and highlight some future research directions.

Book excerpt: This report examines current practice regarding the use of demographic indicators to define and measure the concept of the family, both in statistical and sociological terms. The study indicates that the only statistically meaningful unit for the creation of family indicators is the household, as the family remains a variable concept determined by social and political factors.
Download or read book Redescription Mining written by Esther Galbrun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a gentle introduction to redescription mining, a versatile data mining tool that is useful to find distinct common characterizations of the same objects and, vice versa, to identify sets of objects that admit multiple shared descriptions. It is intended for readers who are familiar with basic data analysis techniques such as clustering, frequent itemset mining, and classification. Redescription mining is defined in a general way, making it applicable to different types of data. The general framework is made more concrete through many practical examples that show the versatility of redescription mining. The book also introduces the main algorithmic ideas for mining redescriptions, together with applications from various domains. The final part of the book contains variations and extensions of the basic redescription mining problem, and discusses some future directions and open questions.
Download or read book Tuberculosis of the Bones and Joints written by Michel Martini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bone and joint tuberculosis is common in developing countries, and surgeons in these countries are often faced with the dual problem of diagnosing and treating this disease. However, bone and joint tuberculosis has not yet completely disappeared from industrialized countries, either. Therefore, this book is also intended for orthopedic surgeons in industrialized countries, who, faced with the rare but characteristic problems posed by bone and joint tuberculosis, are searching for reliable solutions. The last comprehensive textbook on this subject appeared more than 20 years ago, and that was a third edition of a pre-war work. Advances in chemotherapy had made this edition out-of-date even before it was published. The need for a definite up-to-date textbook has therefore been acute. The present book has been written to fill that need, and is based not only upon 20 years' experience with 700 cases, but also upon the results of clinical, bacteriologic, pathologic, and therapeutic research.

Download or read book Globalisation and Comparative Education written by Joseph Zajda and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on discourses of globalisation in comparative education research and the politics of education reforms. It analyses and evaluates the shifts in methodological approaches to globalisation and education reforms, as reflected in comparative education research and their impact on education policy and pedagogy. The book covers topics such as globalisation and comparative education, globalisation as a multidimensional construct, methods and methodologies in comparative education, the moral face of post-structuralism, and school reforms in the age of globalisation. It offers a critical analysis of education policy reforms. The book demonstrates a complex nexus between globalisation, ideology and education reforms. On one hand, democratisation and progressive pedagogy is equated with equality, inclusion, equity, tolerance and human rights, while on the other hand, globalisation is perceived – by some critics at least – to be a totalising force that is widening the socio-economic status (SES) gap and cultural and economic capital between the rich and the poor, and bringing power, domination and control by corporate bodies and powerful political, economic and educational organisations. The perception of globalisation as dynamic and multi faceted processes clearly necessitates a multiple perspective approach in the study of comparative education globally. This book contributes in a very scholarly way, to a more holistic understanding of the nexus between globalisation, comparative education research and education reforms.

Download or read book Globalization and Educational Reform written by Martin Carnoy and published by Unesco. This book was released on 1999 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation puts most governments under pressure to reduce the growth of public spending on education and to find other sources of income for the expected expansion of education systems. In conflict with this is the shift of economic production to knowledge-based intensive products and processes, meaning that the demand for higher education is rising worldwide. In addition, the need for more highly educated low cost labour tends to expand women's educational opportunities, especially in countries where there was resistance to equal access to education for them. Globalised information networks mean the transformation of world culture, but many groups feel marginalised by the market values of this new culture.
