Book excerpt: Malgré sa fréquence, la comorbidité dyslexie-dyscalculie a été peu abordée par la littérature et rares sont les études qui tentent de caractériser cette comorbidité sous le double angle des troubles de la lecture et des mathématiques. Dans ce document, nous étudions le rôle que peut jouer la mémoire de travail dans cette association. Nous nous sommes fixés comme cadre d'étude d'une part l'application de critères diagnostiques stricts (approche catégorielle), et d'autre part la prise en compte de l'hétérogénéité décrite par la littérature pour chacun des troubles isolés (approche dimensionnelle). L'approche catégorielle met en évidence un déficit commun aux trois groupes DYS portant uniquement sur deux des trois constituants de la mémoire de travail: la boucle phonologique et l'administrateur central. Elle montre une aggravation du déficit dans le groupe comorbide et une comorbidité de type additif entre dyslexie et dyscalculie. L'approche dimensionnelle répartit les sujets en quatre groupes présentant des troubles et des profils de mémoire de travail significativement différents, accréditant l 'hypothèse du rôle de la mémoire de travail dans les associations de troubles. Du point de vue de la comorbidité, cette approche a mis en exergue un critère de classification non pris en considération dans notre étude: le différentiel entre performances en mathématiques et performances en lecture. Elle individualise ainsi un groupe de dyslexiques-dyscalculiques dont la dyscalculie est prédominante sur les troubles de lecture; ce groupe présente une atteinte des trois représentations du nombre (verbale, visuelle et analogique), une dyslexie mixte, ainsi qu'un déficit de mémoire de travail touchant tous les constituants de la mémoire de travail. Les résultats de notre étude appuient donc l'hypothèse du rôle de la mémoire de travail dans la comorbidité dyslexie-dyscalculie et confirment l'importance de prendre en compte les sous-types de troubles.

A range of findings have shown how students consistently answer them in ways that fail to take account of the reality of the situations described. This monograph reports on studies carried out to investigate this "suspension of sense-making" in answering word problems. In Part One, a wide range of examples documenting the strength of the phenomenon is reviewed. Initial surprise at the findings was replaced by a conviction that the explanation lies in the culture of the mathematics classroom, specifically the rules implicitly governing the nature and interpretation of the word problem genre. This theoretical shift is reflected in Part Two. A detailed analysis of the way in which word problems are currently taught in typical mathematical classrooms is followed by reviews of design experiments illustrating how, by immersing students in a fundamentally changed learning environment, they can acquire what the authors consider to be more appropriate conceptions about, and strategies for doing, word problems. Part Three turns to a wider discussion of theoretical issues, a further analysis of the features of the educational system considered responsible for outcomes detrimental to many students' understanding and conception of mathematics, and suggestions for rethinking the role of word problems within the curriculum.
