As a result, we have all too often ended up with a Christianity shorn of its cosmic scope and wide cultural implications, and restricted to institutional church life and the cultivation of private spiritual experience. The consequences are frequently enervating and corrosive. Without disregarding what is important in the past, evangelicals are here challenged to take the Bible much more seriously, and thereby transcend the limitations of their habitual reductionism. Evangelicals are encouraged to embrace an integral and full-orbed understanding of Christian discipleship that will equip the faithful to address the deep and complex challenges of the twenty-first century.

It received flowers from the Spirituality Center of America for its contribution to free expression located in the “born again” experience. The bulletin read “A Celebration of Evangelicalism’s Life and a Witness to Cultural Spirituality.” The few pastors who wanted the word “resurrection” in the bulletin were voted down lest seekers be offended by biblical doctrine. Gnostics for America lauded evangelicalism for its theological view of the inner divine spark located in all humanity. The media reported that the funeral appeared more like a conservative political rally. A nationally-recognized pastor of a megachurch was to be the keynote speaker, but he was embroiled in a sex scandal. The president of the Enneagram Esoteric Society was chosen instead. Her topic was “Enhancing the Fruit of the Spirit by Knowing Your Number.” Different speakers eulogized the deceased. A representative of the therapeutic community praised the movement for how it left parishioners with emotional uplift after feel-good sermons based upon devotional writings. The ceremony was held in a theater with excellent projection and sound equipment, though there was a two-minute pause in the singing when the projection screen put up the words of a hymn rather than a praise song. This book concludes in the same way evangelicalism’s funeral did—by pronouncing benediction at this movement’s graveside. For as soon as that occurs, authentic Christianity characterized by a biblical gospel and return to the church may be able to usher in the kingdom of God going into the twenty-first century.

This may be particularly true in the United States. Certainly immigrant Catholicism became Americanized; mainstream Protestantism accommodated itself to the modern world; and Reform Judaism is at home in American society. In Evangelicalism, Richard Kyle explores paradoxical adjustments and transformations in the relationship between conservative Protestant Evangelicalism and contemporary American culture. Evangelicals have resisted many aspects of the modern world, but Kyle focuses on what he considers their romance with popular culture. Kyle sees this as an Americanized Christianity rather than a Christian America, but the two are so intertwined that it is difficult to discern the difference between them. Instead, in what has become a vicious self-serving cycle, Evangelicals have baptized and sanctified secular culture in order to be considered culturally relevant, thus increasing their numbers and success within abundantly populous and populist-driven American society. In doing so, Evangelicalism has become a middle-class movement, one that dominates America's culture, and unabashedly populist. Many Evangelicals view America as God's chosen nation, thus sanctifying American culture, consumerism, and middle-class values. Kyle believes Evangelicals have served themselves well in consciously and deliberately adjusting their faith to popular culture. Yet he also thinks Evangelicals may have compromised themselves and their future in the process, so heavily borrowing from the popular culture that in many respects the Evangelical subculture has become secularism with a light gilding of Christianity. If so, he asks, can Evangelicalism survive its own popularity and reaffirm its religious origins, or will it assimilate and be absorbed into what was once known as the Great American Melting Pot of religions and cultures? Will the Gospel of the American dream ultimately engulf and destroy the Gospel of Evangelical success in America? This thoughtful and thought-provoking volume will interest anyone concerned with the modern-day success of the Evangelical movement in America and the aspirations and fate of its faithful.
