Book excerpt: Religious observance in all areas of life was an issue of major importance to the Qumran community. Several collections of laws or halakhot from Qumran bear witness to the parallel development of these laws with those that emerged within Rabbinic Judaism. This volume includes editions ofseveral such compositions of which Tohorot is the largest. They provide major insight into the development of early halakha. This collection of halakhic compositions should be studied in conjunction with the Temple Scroll, 4QMiqsat Maase ha-Torah, the Damascus Document, Serekh ha-Yahad, and sundrysimilar compositions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this long awaited edition Baumgarten presents all the known Qumran Cave 4 manuscripts of the Damascus Document on the basis of J. T. Milik's original transcriptions. These eight manuscripts antedate the two medieval Cairo Geniza texts (CD) by more than a millennium and are indispensablefor all future literary and historical studies on one of the major foundational works of the Qumran community. For the first time we have the paraenetic beginning and ending of the work, as well as major additions to the legal corpus found in one of the medieval texts. The laws of this corpus andthe historical identification of the Jews who formulated them were earlier in this century the subject of much controversy, but have since been largely ignored in Qumran scholarship. Some even suggested that they were not an integral part of the Damascus Document. It is now apparent from theexpanded corpus that the interpretation of biblical law was a central concern of the Qumran community. Among the new subjects treated are such matters as the ethical arrangement of marriages, the role of women in the sect, and the legal status of fetal life. These laws are found side by side withallusions to the cosmic conflict of light and darkness and a view of history in which periods of wrath are ordained to precede the end of days.

Book The Archaeology of Ethnicity

Download or read book The Archaeology of Ethnicity written by Siân Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of ethnicity is highly controversial in contemporary archaeology. Indigenous and nationalist claims to territory, often rely on reconstructions of the past based on the traditional identification of 'cultures' from archaeological remains. Sian Jones responds to the need for a reassessment of the ways in which social groups are identified in the archaeological record, with a comprehensive and critical synthesis of recent theories of ethnicity in the human sciences. In doing so, she argues for a fundamentally different view of ethnicity, as a complex dynamic form of identification, requiring radical changes in archaeological analysis and interpretation.

Book Hellenism and Empire

Download or read book Hellenism and Empire written by Simon Swain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hellenism and Empire explores identity, politics, and culture in the Greek world of the first three centuries AD, the period known as the second sophistic. The sources of this identity were the words and deeds of classical Greece, and the emphasis placed on Greekness and Greek heritage was far greater then than at any other time. Yet this period is often seen as a time of happy consensualism between the Greek and Roman halves of the Roman Empire. The first part of the book shows that Greek identity came before any loyalty to Rome (and was indeed partly a reaction to Rome), while the views of the major authors of the period, which are studied in the second part, confirm and restate the prior claims of Hellenism.
