Book Questions

Download or read book Questions written by Veneeta Dayal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book synthesizes and integrates 40 years of research on the semantics of questions, and its interface with pragmatics and syntax, conducted within the formal semantics tradition. A wide range of topics are covered, including weak-strong exhaustiveness, maximality, functional answers, single-multiple-trapped list answers, embedding predicates, quantificational variability, concealed questions, weak islands, polar and alternative questions, negative polarity, and non-canonical questions. The literature on this rich set of topics, theoretically diverse and scattered across multiple venues, is often hard to assimilate. Veneeta Dayal, drawing on her own research, brings them together for the first time in a coherent, concise, and well-structured whole. Each chapter begins with a non-technical introduction to the issues discussed; semantically sophisticated accounts are then presented incrementally, with the major points summarized at the end of each section. Written in an accessible style, this book provides both a guide to one of the most vibrant areas of research in natural language and an account of how this area of study is developing. It will be a unique resource for the novice and expert alike, and seeks to appeal to a variety of readers without compromising depth and breadth of coverage.

Download or read book Practice of Satsang written by Natasha Dalmia and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practice of Satsang is an invitation for Conscious Living. Written as Letters to my Grandchildren, the book shares personal short stories, quotes from the real-life protagonists of the stories, provocative questions and practices for your experimentation and play. The purpose is to deepen relationships with oneself and with ones family, friends, fellow - travellers, colleagues, clients and the communities one belongs to. 'Sat' means truth and 'Sanga' means company. Satsang is an old Sanskit word meaning 'being with the truth', and 'gathering together to find the truth'. Usually, in my culture, it is interpreted to gather in the presence of a guru (Teacher), who would help to be with the truth. As I grew up, I realised that there are many gurus (teachers) in our lives who help us to be with the truth, with our truth. They come in unexpected relationships and situations as our own higher consciousness. The key is in my openness, perception and choice. Am I willing to recognise the teacher, the truth and times of sanga in my inner and outer worlds? Journey as you read this book, inwards to your own genius, wisdom, consciousness, bliss and truth. Come, let us exchange stories and practices and reflect together on fundamental questions, across generations and cultures.

Book Long Road from Quito

Download or read book Long Road from Quito written by Tony Hiss and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Road from Quito presents a fascinating portrait of David Gaus, an unlikely trailblazer with deep ties to the University of Notre Dame and an even more compelling postgraduate life. Gaus is co-founder, with his mentor Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., of Andean Health and Development (AHD), an organization dedicated to supporting health initiatives in South America. Tony Hiss traces the trajectory of Gaus's life from an accounting undergraduate to a medical doctor committed to bringing modern medicine to poor, rural communities in Ecuador. When he began his medical practice in 1996, the best strategy in these areas consisted of providing preventive measures combined with rudimentary clinical services. Gaus, however, realized he had to take on a much more sweeping approach to best serve sick people in the countryside, who would have to take a five-hour truck ride to Quito and the nearest hospital. He decided to bring the hospital to the patients. He has now done so twice, building two top-of-the-line hospitals in Pedro Vicente Maldonado and Santo Domingo, Ecuador. The hospitals, staffed only by Ecuadorians, train local doctors through a Family Medicine residency program, and are financially self-sustaining. His work with AHD is recognized as a model for the rest of Latin America, and AHD has grown into a major player in global health, frequently partnering with the World Health Organization and other international agencies. With a charming, conversational style that is a pleasure to read, Hiss shows how Gaus's vision and determination led to these accomplishments, in a story with equal parts interest for Notre Dame readers, health practitioners, medical anthropologists, Latin American students and scholars, and the general public.
