Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom by a Thread: The History of Quilombos in Brazil brings together some of the best scholars in the world working on the history of quilombos (maroon societies) in Brazil from a variety of perspectives and approaches. Over 40 percent of the total volume of captive Africans arrived in Brazil during a 400-year period of legal and contraband transatlantic slaving. If slavery penetrated every aspect of Brazilian life, so did resistance—and co-existence with it—in the form of small to large-scale quilombos. Palmares and the other quilombos built an exciting history of freedom. Yet, it is a history filled with traps and surprises, advances and setbacks, conflict and commitments, while advancing their immediate interests and more ambitious projects of liberty. These events and many others are part of the history told in this book.

Book Black Bodies Black Rights

Download or read book Black Bodies Black Rights written by Elizabeth Farfán-Santos and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under a provision in the Brazilian constitution, rural black communities identified as the modern descendants of quilombos—runaway slave communities—are promised land rights as a form of reparations for the historic exclusion of blacks from land ownership. The quilombo provision has been hailed as a success for black rights; however, rights for quilombolas are highly controversial and, in many cases, have led to violent land conflicts. Although thousands of rural black communities have been legally recognized, only a handful have received the rights they were promised. Conflict over quilombola rights is widespread and carries important consequences for race relations and political representations of blackness in twenty-first century Brazil. Drawing on a year of field research in a quilombola community, Elizabeth Farfán-Santos explores how quilombo recognition has significantly affected the everyday lives of those who experience the often-complicated political process. Questions of identity, race, and entitlement play out against a community’s struggle to prove its historical authenticity—and to gain the land and rights they need to survive. This work not only demonstrates the lived experience of a new, particular form of blackness in Brazil, but also shows how blackness is being mobilized and reimagined to gain social rights and political recognition. Black Bodies, Black Rights thus represents an important contribution to the rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of Afro-Latino studies.

Book For Land and Liberty

  • Author : Merle L. Bowen

Download or read book For Land and Liberty written by Merle L. Bowen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Land and Liberty is a comparative study of the history and contemporary circumstances concerning Brazil's quilombos (African-descent rural communities) and their inhabitants, the quilombolas. The book examines the disposition of quilombola claims to land as a site of contestation over citizenship and its meanings for Afro-descendants, as well as their connections to the broader fight against racism. Contrary to the narrative that quilombola identity is a recent invention, constructed for the purpose of qualifying for opportunities made possible by the 1988 law, Bowen argues that quilombola claims are historically and locally rooted. She examines the ways in which state actors have colluded with large landholders and modernization schemes to appropriate quilombo land, and further argues that, even when granted land titles, quilombolas face challenges issuing from systemic racism. By analyzing the quilombo movement and local initiatives, this book offers fresh perspectives on the resurgence of movements, mobilization, and resistance in Brazil.

Book excerpt: "Quilombola Communities and Land Overlapping Challenges in Brazil" delves into the complexities of quilombola communities in the Brazilian context. The author explores the struggles and challenges faced by these traditional communities, especially those located in the Jalapão region, Tocantins. The book examines issues of territory, identity, and memory, offering a profound analysis of the legal, territorial, and ethnic-racial conflicts surrounding the constitutional rights of quilombola communities. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, the book highlights the changes occurring within these communities after the implementation of the Jalapão State Park and questions to what extent these changes have affected quilombola identity. It is a meticulous and engaging exploration of quilombola experiences in contemporary Brazil.

Download or read book Hist rias de quilombolas written by Flávio dos Santos Gomes and published by Companhia Das Letras. This book was released on 2006 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Entre estudos e causos os quilombos e suas din micas de inova o social e resist ncia written by Gabriella Rocha de Freitas and published by Deviant. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Conflitos Territoriais e Identit rios da Comunidade Quilombola Onze Negras Cabo de Santo Agostinho PE written by Maria Pricila Miranda dos Santos and published by Editora Appris. This book was released on 2022-08-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Devir quilomba written by Mariléa de Almeida and published by Editora Elefante. This book was released on 2022-05-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Queer Sites in Global Contexts

Download or read book Queer Sites in Global Contexts written by Regner Ramos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Sites in Global Contexts showcases a variety of cross-cultural perspectives that foreground the physical and online experiences of LGBTQ+ people living in the Caribbean, South and North America, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. The individual chapters—a collection of research-based texts by scholars around the world—provide twelve compelling case studies: queer sites that include buildings, digital networks, natural landscapes, urban spaces, and non-normative bodies. By prioritizing divergent histories and practices of queer life in geographies that are often othered by dominant queer studies in the West—female sex workers, people of color, indigenous populations, Latinx communities, trans identities, migrants—the book constructs thoroughly situated, nuanced discussions on queerness through a variety of research methods. The book presents tangible examples of empirical research and practice-based work in the fields of queer and gender studies; geography, architectural, and urban theory; and media and digital culture. Responding to the critical absence surrounding experiences of non-White queer folk in Western academia, Queer Sites in Global Contexts acts as a timely resource for scholars, activists, and thinkers interested in queer placemaking practices—both spatial and digital—of diverse cultures.

Book Until the Rulers Obey

Download or read book Until the Rulers Obey written by Clifton Ross and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the Rulers Obey brings together voices from the movements behind the wave of change that swept Latin America at the turn of the twenty-first century. These movements have galvanized long-silent—or silenced—sectors of society: indigenous people, campesinos, students, the LGBT community, the unemployed, and all those left out of the promised utopia of a globalized economy. They have deployed a wide range of strategies and actions, sometimes building schools or clinics, sometimes occupying factories or fields, sometimes building and occupying political parties to take the reins of the state, and sometimes resisting government policies in order to protect their newfound power in community. This unique collection of interviews features five dozen leaders and grassroots activists from fifteen countries presenting their work and debating pressing questions of power, organizational forms, and relations with the state. They have mobilized on a wide range of issues: fighting against mines and agribusiness and for living space, rural and urban; for social space won through recognition of language, culture, and equal participation; for community and environmental survival. The book is organized in chapters by country with each chapter introduced by a solidarity activist, writer, or academic with deep knowledge of the place. This indispensable compilation of primary source material gives participants, students, and observers of social movements a chance to learn from their experience. Contributors include ACOGUATE, Luis Ballesteros, Marc Becker, Margi Clarke, Benjamin Dangl, Mar Daza, Mickey Ellinger, Michael Fox, J.
