Book excerpt: The coasts of today's American South feature luxury condominiums, resorts, and gated communities, yet just a century ago, a surprising amount of beachfront property in the Chesapeake, along the Carolina shores, and around the Gulf of Mexico was owned and populated by African Americans. Blending social and environmental history, Andrew W. Kahrl tells the story of African American–owned beaches in the twentieth century. By reconstructing African American life along the coast, Kahrl demonstrates just how important these properties were for African American communities and leisure, as well as for economic empowerment, especially during the era of the Jim Crow South. However, in the wake of the civil rights movement and amid the growing prosperity of the Sunbelt, many African Americans fell victim to effective campaigns to dispossess black landowners of their properties and beaches. Kahrl makes a signal contribution to our understanding of African American landowners and real-estate developers, as well as the development of coastal capitalism along the southern seaboard, tying the creation of overdeveloped, unsustainable coastlines to the unmaking of black communities and cultures along the shore. The result is a skillful appraisal of the ambiguous legacy of racial progress in the Sunbelt.

Download or read book Killing Us Softly written by Efrem Smith and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian life is actually a kind of death. We die to ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Dying in Christ, however, is an opportunity—to experience the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit as we spread the Good News of a God who loves us enough to save us and remake us in his image. Efrem Smith helps us see that Christian discipleship is a counterintuitive life. In a world turned upside down by sin, God carefully and lovingly strips us of worldly values and turns us right-side up as good citizens and ambassadors of his Kingdom.

Book excerpt: "You fear the forest.. It is not foolish." His words rang like bells in the clearing, each face reacting to their din. "But the forest does not hate you, it does not hunt you. It simply does not care about you." From British Fantasy Award-winning author RJ Barker comes the second installment in a new epic fantasy trilogy set in a forest straight out of darkest folklore with outlaws fighting an evil empire and warring deities. The Forester known as Cahan led the village of Harn in rebellion against the all-powerful, oppressive forces of the Rai. A great victory was won, but to avoid retaliation he must lead the people of Harn into the Wyrdwood. Cahan never wanted this responsibility, but fate has its eye on him, and without him the people will be helpless against the terrors of the forest. But in the ground of Crua, a dark god is growing in power using the strength of decay. It is something new, something worse than the magics of the Rai, and it has its claws in Cahan. The people of Harn need him, and they will need new allies if they are to have any hope of surviving in the depths of the Wyrdwood. Especially if the man they consider a hero, the Forester, Cahan Du-Nahere, is as lost to them as he believes. Praise for Gods of the Wyrdwood "An experienced novelist at the top of his game—this is Avatar meets Dune, on shrooms." —SFX "A sweeping story of destiny and redemption. Book 100 Cases of Reincarnation Among Dong People

Download or read book 100 Cases of Reincarnation Among Dong People written by Changzhen Li and published by Changzhen Li. This book was released on 2021-02-13 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 Cases of Reincarnation Among Dong People is a book by Mr. Changzhen Li that documents the author’s investigative journey deep into the homeland of the Kam people (officially the Dong ethnic group of China), located in the area between the provinces of Hunan and Guangxi in China. The book offers a comprehensive account of Mr. Li’s work with 100 “Reincarnators” from the area of Pingyang, as well as dozens of its surrounding rural villages. All case studies are carefully documented to preserve the authenticity of their narratives, with accompanying video interviews available for reference. While there had been many accounts of reincarnation in the world in which the subjects were able to recall memories from a past life, the cases detailed in this book are unique in that their subjects share a rare ability to recall memories from the intermediary stage between death and rebirth. This unusual trait reveals groundbreaking and thought-provoking details about the activities of spirits beyond the land of the living, and offers an invaluable addition to the field of reincarnation research. As such, Mr. Li’s book may be the world’s most comprehensive account of this subject at the present time, and uncovers a myriad of unprecedented details concerning the activities of the spirits, including rare cases in which two-spirited individuals reincarnate into two separate beings, an in-depth description of how birthmarks are formed under the influence of a reincarnating spirit, the biophysical characteristics of spirits and their abilities, details on how spirits enter and exit from an incarnation, the flight speed of certain spirits, solid evidence supporting the hypothesis of memories being stored within the soul rather than the brain, and even two underworld enforcers working for Yama! .A variety of data compilation and visualization have been included to assist researchers of reincarnation science with their investigations. Pingyang, the geographical area surveyed in this undertaking, was a rare community with one of the highest reincarnation densities in the world, and the investigative project itself was conducted with an unprecedented level of theoretical depth and thoroughness. • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Linked Lives written by Michele Ruth Gamburd and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When youth shake off their rural roots and middle-aged people migrate for economic opportunities, what happens to the grandparents left at home? Linked Lives provides readers with intimate glimpses into homes in a Sri Lankan Buddhist village, where elders wisely use their moral authority and their control over valuable property to assure that they receive both physical and spiritual care when they need it. The care work that grandparents do for grandchildren allows labor migration and contributes to the overall well-being of the extended family. The book considers the efforts migrant workers make to build and buy houses and the ways those rooms and walls constrain social activities. It outlines the strategies elders employ to age in place, and the alternatives they face in local old folks’ homes. Based on ethnographic work done over a decade, Michele Gamburd shows how elders face the challenges of a rapidly globalizing world.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness written by Fred Everett Maus and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and queerness interact in many different ways. The Oxford Handbook of Music and Queerness brings together many topics and scholarly disciplines, reflecting the diversity of current research and methodology. Each of the book's six sections exemplifies a particular rhetoric of queer music studies. The section "Kinds of Music" explores queer interactions with specific musics such as EDM, hip hop, and country. "Versions" explores queer meanings that emerge in the creation of a version of a pre-existing text, for instance in musical settings of Biblical texts or practices of karaoke. "Voices and Sounds" turns in various ways to the materiality of music and sound. "Lives" focuses on interactions of people's lives with music and queerness. "Histories" addresses moments in the past, beginning with times when present conceptualizations of sexuality had not yet developed and moving to cases studies of more recent history, including the creation of pop songs in response to HIV/AIDS and the Eurovision song contest. The final section, "Cross-cultural Queerness," asks how to understand gender and sexuality in locations where recent Euro-American concepts may not be appropriate.
