Book Quietly Comes the Buddha

Download or read book Quietly Comes the Buddha written by Elizabth Clare Prophet and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this inspiring work, you will learn how to discover peace, transformation, and divine solutions to your everyday problems through the creativity of the Buddha-nature in your heart. Quietly Comes the Buddha unfolds the story of Sumedha, the story of a soul becoming the Buddha, as it reveals his experiences during many lifetimes in the mastery of the “ten perfections,” or virtues, that lead to Buddhahood. It shows how you, too, can cultivate these qualities—these ten habits of highly effective Buddhas-to-be—as you walk your own spiritual path. This beautiful blend of prose and poetry, prayer and meditation also includes special sections of meditations on the heart for resolving con?icts and chakra meditations. “This devotional text, firmly grounded in Buddhism but reaching out to embrace other teachings, has the potential for awakening in the heart an ardent desire for enlightenment. It both comforts and challenges.” —Sonja Arntzen, scholar of Zen poetry and Japanese literature, author of Ikkyu and the Crazy Cloud Anthology and The Kagero Diary"

Book The Suttanipata

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bodhi
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2017-09-26
  • ISBN : 1614294542
  • Pages : 1616 pages

Download or read book The Suttanipata written by Bodhi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 1616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume in the Teachings of the Buddha series translates the Suttanipata, a text that matches the Dhammapada in its concise power and its centrality to the Buddhist tradition. Celebrated translator Bhikkhu Bodhi illuminates this text and its classical commentaries with elegant renderings and authoritative annotations. The Suttanipata, or “Group of Discourses” is a collection of discourses ascribed to the Buddha that includes some of the most popular suttas of the Pali Canon, among them the Discourse on Loving-Kindness Sutta. The suttas are primarily in verse, though several are in mixed prose and verse. The Suttanipata contains discourses that extol the figure of the muni, the illumined sage, who wanders homeless completely detached from the world. Other suttas, such as the Discourse on Downfall and the Discourse on Blessings, establish the foundations of Buddhist lay ethics. The last two chapters—the Atthakavagga (Chapter of Octads) and the Parayanavagga (The Way to the Beyond)—are considered to be among the most ancient parts of the Pali Canon. The Atthakavagga advocates a critical attitude toward views and doctrines. The Parayanavagga is a beautiful poem in which sixteen spiritual seekers travel across India to meet the Buddha and ask him profound questions pertaining to the highest goal. The commentary, the Paramatthajotika, relates the background story to each sutta and explains each verse in detail. The volume includes numerous excerpts from the Niddesa, an ancient commentary already included in the Pali Canon, which offers detailed expositions of each verse in the Atthakavagga, the Parayanavagga, and the Rhinoceros Horn Sutta. Translator Bhikkhu Bodhi provides an insightful, in-depth introduction, a guide to the individual suttas, extensive notes, a list of parallels to the discourses of the Suttanipata, and a list of the numerical sets mentioned in the commentaries.

Book excerpt: The Zen master and one of the world's most beloved teachers returns with a concise, practical guide to understanding and developing our most powerful inner resource—silence—to help us find happiness, purpose, and peace. Many people embark on a seemingly futile search for happiness, running as if there is somewhere else to get to, when the world they live in is full of wonder. To be alive is a miracle. Beauty calls to us every day, yet we rarely are in the position to listen. To hear the call of beauty and respond to it, we need silence. Silence shows us how to find and maintain our equanimity amid the barrage of noise. Thich Nhat Hanh guides us on a path to cultivate calm even in the most chaotic places. This gift of silence doesn't require hours upon hours of silent meditation or an existing practice of any kind. Through careful breathing and mindfulness techniques he teaches us how to become truly present in the moment, to recognize the beauty surrounding us, and to find harmony. With mindfulness comes stillness—and the silence we need to come back to ourselves and discover who we are and what we truly want, the keys to happiness and well-being.

Book Hardcore Zen

Download or read book Hardcore Zen written by Brad Warner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen, plain and simple, with no BS. This is not your typical Zen book. Brad Warner, a young punk who grew up to be a Zen master, spares no one. This bold new approach to the "Why?" of Zen Buddhism is as strongly grounded in the tradition of Zen as it is utterly revolutionary. Warner's voice is hilarious, and he calls on the wisdom of everyone from punk and pop culture icons to the Buddha himself to make sure his points come through loud and clear. As it prods readers to question everything, Hardcore Zen is both an approach and a departure, leaving behind the soft and lyrical for the gritty and stark perspective of a new generation. This new edition will feature an afterword from the author.
