Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks on Power A few weeks later, in Kansas City visiting the medical and dental schools, I recall distinctly stand ing one morning in a disordered room - shavings on the floor, desks disarranged - the institution just moving into new quarters, and not yet settled. I was discussing With a member of the faculty, the dean I think, about how many the room would hold, how soon it would be ready, and SO ou - just a busi ness talk, nothing more - when he turned to me rather abruptly, looking me full in the face, and said with quiet deliberation: I'm a member of church; I think I am a deacon in our church running his hand through his hair meditatively, as though to refresh his memory - but I am not very much of a christian, Sir. The smile that started to come to my face at the Odd frankness Of his remark was completely chased away by the distinct touch of pathos in both face and voice that seemed to Speak Of a hungry, unsatisfied heart within. Perhaps it was a month or so later, in one of the mining towns down in the zinc belt of southwestern Missouri, I was to speak to a meeting of men. There were probably five or six hundred gathered in a Methodist Church. They were strangers to me. I was in doubt What best to say to them. One dis likes to fire ammunition at people that are absent. Book Quiet Talks on Prayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Quiet Talks on Prayer Classic Reprint written by S. D. Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks on Prayer There are five outlets of power: five avenues through which this One within shows Himself, and reveals His power. First: through the life, what we are. Just simply what we are. If we be right the power of God will be constantly flowing out, though we be not conscious of it. It throws the keenest kind of emphasis on a man being right in his life. There will be an eager desire to serve. Yet we may constantly do more in what we are than in what we do. We may serve better in the lives we live than in the best service we ever give. The memory of that should bring rest to your spirit when a bit tired, and may be dis heartened because tired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks on Power An Odd Distinction. A few years ago I was making a brief tour among the colleges of Missouri. I remember one morning in a certain college village going over from the hotel to take breakfast with some of the boys, and coming back with one of the fellows whom I had just met. As we walked along, chatting away, I asked him quietly, "Are you a christian, sir?" He turned quickly and looked at me with an odd, surprised expression in his eye and then turning his face away said: "Well, I'm a member of church, but - I don't believe I'm very much of a christian." Then I looked at him and he frankly volunteered a little information. Not very much. He did not need to say much. You can see a large field through a chink in the fence. And I saw enough to let me know that he was right in the criticism he had made upon himself. We talked a bit and parted. But his remark set me to thinking. A week later, in another town, speaking one morning to the students of a young ladies' seminary, I said afterwards to one of the teachers as we were talking: "I suppose your young women here are all christians." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks on Service The Beginning of an Endless Friendship. About a quarter of four one afternoon, three young men were standing together on a road leading down to a swift-running river. It was an old road, beaten down hard by thousands of feet through hundreds of years. It led down to the river, and then along its bank through a village scatteringly nestled by the fords of the river. The young men were intently absorbed in conversation. One of them was a man to attract attention anywhere. He was clearly the leader of the three. His clothing was very plain, even to severeness. His face was spare, suggesting a diet as severely plain as his garments. The abundance of dark hair on head and face brought out sharply the spare, thoughtful, earnest look of his face. His eyes glowed like coals of living fire beneath the thick, bushy eyebrows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Quiet Talks About the Tempter Classic Reprint

Download or read book Quiet Talks About the Tempter Classic Reprint written by S. D. Gordon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Talks About the Tempter These Quiet Talks about the Tempter are really talks about the Spirit-filled life. They necessarily put much emphasis upon our Lord Jesus the Victor; upon Calvary, the place of Victory; upon Obedience, the pathway of Victory; upon Bible-study and Prayer, the preparation for Victory; and upon Courage - faith fighting - the spirit of Victory. These are homely talks. They have the directness and blunt simplicity, and repetition for emphasis sake, that mark conversational speech. They were spoken to crowds of men and women, in the thick of the fight, looking for a bit of help. They are put down here in black and white, in response to many requests, practically as they were spoken, and for the same purpose - that some may be helped to better fighting, and to swifter, surer victory. They are not meant for the scholarly, nor for the argumentative critic, save as these may care to enroll themselves as men looking for any bit of homely help on the road of life. Book Quiet Talks on Power

Book excerpt: Every man needs power. Every earnest man covets power. Every willing man has the Master's promise of power. But every man does not possess the promised power. And many, it is to be feared, never will. Many a man's life to-day is utterly lacking in power. Some of us will look back at the close of life with a sense of keen disappointment and of bitter defeat. And the reason is not far to seek, nor hard to see through. If we do not have power it is because we are not willing to pay the price.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unused Powers The sermons included in this volume were delivered recently to large congregations in the Baptist Temple, Philadelphia. They can truthfully be called "Sermons That Have Helped the Masses." Back of every sermon delivered by Dr. Conwell is the spirit of helpfulness. The thousands of letters he is receiving constantly, telling of the uplift, enrichment and inspiration his sermons have given, are an indication not simply of his popularity, but of the fact that his utterances have found ready response in the needy and hungry soul. Dr. Conwell's influence in his pulpit ministry is of more than local character. It extends literally "to the ends of the earth." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Power of Silence: An Interpretation of Life in Its Relation to Health and Happiness The present volume is the outgrowth of! More than a half-century of inquiry on the part of those to whom the author is chiefly indebted. This inquiry began with the researches of Dr. P. P. Quimby, of Belfast, Me., who devoted more than twenty years to the investigation of mental phenomena in relation to health and happiness. With him the author's father and mother were associated for several years previous to his death in 1866, and from him they learned many practical truths of the inner life. But Dr. Quimby left no published work, and 'they were long prevented by adverse circumstances from making any public use of his investigations. Yet they never lost Sight of his teaching. It became a life with them, and bore the test of all the experiences in the category of sorrow and suffering. They created a home atmosphere of hope, of quiet strength and healthy inquiry, into which it was a rich heritage to be born. Book Home Talks Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Home Talks Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Humphrey Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home-Talks, Vol. 1 They were at first reported from memory and from and: notes as could be taken in long hand; but since the days of phonography they have been reported verbatim. For two or three years past, Mr. Noyes has been revising them as they have appeared in the Oneida Circular. It is from these revised Talks (which are but a small part. Of the whole) that the present volume has been mostly taken; and in anticipation of future selections from the same source we call it Volume I. Its publication is in no wise due to its author, and we are sure it has not been carried on in any spirit of literary pretension. Mr. Noyes expects to be judged by what he has done and not by what he has said. Literature is to him, as it is to life on the whole, what music is to the marching column. I-ie cares more for the good shots, than he does for the sound of the drum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Talks Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks Sweet with the perfume of an unselfish love, the life of Francis Murphy was a benediction to millions, and his friendship will ever be a blessed memory to the writer. It was his earnest desire that some message should abide after his death, in order that the world might remember the great truth of gospel temperance for which his work stood. This matter often occupied his thoughts in the closing year of his life, and it is in answer to a request made by him just before his last illness, that I present these talks. In selecting from among his published letters, all of which it was my privilege to edit, I have sought to choose those best calculated to bear in brief his message of gospel temperance, as this little book may be followed by a more comprehensive history of his life work.
