Book Quick and Dirty Answers to the Biggest of Questions

Download or read book Quick and Dirty Answers to the Biggest of Questions written by Charles M. Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quick and Dirty Answers to the Biggest of Questions addresses how the new kind of understanding we need today, besides helping us confront modern-day challenges, also brings a new creativity of perspective to more ultimate questions. It describes how many such ultimate questions have baffled us not because they are inherently difficult, but becase they require a maturity of understanding of which we are only now becoming capable. This short book uses the thinking of Creative Systems Theory to take on some of the most important and timely of such quesions. Some examples: -How do we best understand the times in which we live? -How do we best understand the human story as a whole? -Why, at different times in history, has human understanding taken the forms that it has? -How do we best understand the experience of free will? -Are the beliefs of science and religion just different or, instead, parts of a larger picture? -What is our place in the larger scheme of things? These questions share a common bond: they are systemic, and systemic in a particular sense we are only beginning to fully grasp. Quick and Dirty Answersdescribes how the needed answers to these questions are in fact straightforward, indeed rather common sense. What is new and different is that this is a sort of common sense that we are only beginning to be able to get our minds around. Quick and Dirty Answers to the Biggest of Questionsis intended for people who find particular fascination with overarching, "theory of everything" reflection.

Book The Psychology of Driving

Download or read book The Psychology of Driving written by Graham J. Hole and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road accidents are the major cause of death and injury among young people in the developing world, and the field of psychology can offer great insights into the many factors that are at play when we get behind the wheels of our cars. Based on data collected around the world on drivers of all age groups, Graham Hole provides an up to date picture of the realities of driving, including visual perception issues, cell phone distractions, fatigue, drugs, and the effects of aging. These insights can help explain why we crash, as well as how we achieve the amazing feat of not crashing more often than we do. In this jargon-free and very accessible book, Hole applies psychological methods and insights to this every-day experience with two audiences in mind. First, he speaks to accident investigators, who frequently rely on well-developed understandings of engineering and forensics and less insight into the psychology of the driver. Second, of course, this book will be of value to anyone interested in the application of cognitive psychology to real-world behaviors, and to anyone who drives.

Book The Barnett formula

    Book Details:
  • Author : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: Select Committee on the Barnett Formula
  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2009-07-17
  • ISBN : 9780108444654
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book The Barnett formula written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: Select Committee on the Barnett Formula and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barnett Formula is the mechanism used by the United Kingdom Government to allocate more than half of total public expenditure in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Formula has been used for the last thirty years to determine the annual increase in allocation (the increment). Each year these increments are added on to the previous year's allocation (the baseline) to create what is now a significant block grant of funds. The Formula accounted for almost £49 billion of public spending in 2007-08. Despite the political changes within the United Kingdom the Formula has continued to be used and has never been reviewed or revised. The Formula was only intended to be a short term measure and should no longer be. A UK Funding Commission should be established to assess relative need in the UK's regions and advise on a new method of distributing funding to reflect those needs. The baseline has never been reviewed to take account of changing population patterns; this means that the grant provides funds without reference to the needs of each of the countries and regions of the UK. There should be a link between the grant of funds made to each of the administrations and their actual per capita funding needs. The Committee's research suggests that England and Scotland have markedly lower overall needs per head of population than Wales and Northern Ireland. The Committee suggest that the UK Funding Commission undertake an assessment of relative need now and in the future and that they undertake periodic reviews as well as publish annual data about the allocation of funding between the devolved administrations.

Book excerpt: Break the Old, Waterfall Habits that Hinder Agile Success: Drive Rapid Value and Continuous Improvement When agile teams don't get immediate results, it's tempting for them to fall back into old habits that make success even less likely. In Being Agile, Leslie Ekas and Scott Will present eleven powerful techniques for rapidly gaining substantial value from agile, making agile methods stick, and launching a "virtuous circle" of continuous improvement. Drawing on their experience helping more than 100 teams transition to agile, the authors review its key principles, identify corresponding practices, and offer breakthrough approaches for implementing them. Using their techniques, you can break typical waterfall patterns and go beyond merely "doing agile" to actually thinking and being agile. Ekas and Will help you clear away silos, improve stakeholder interaction, eliminate waste and waterfall-style inefficiencies, and lead the agile transition far more successfully. Each of their eleven principles can stand on its own: when you combine them, they become even more valuable. Coverage includes Building "whole teams" that cut across silos and work together throughout a product's lifecycle Engaging product stakeholders earlier and far more effectively Overcoming inefficient "waterations" and "big batch" waterfall thinking Getting past the curse of multi-tasking Eliminating dangerous technical and project debt Repeatedly deploying "release-ready" software in real user environments Delivering what customers really need, not what you think they need Fixing the root causes of problems so they don't recur Learning from experience: mastering continuous improvement Assessing whether you're just "doing agile" or actually "being agile" Being Agile will be indispensable for all software professionals now adopting agi≤ for coaches, managers, engineers, and team members who want to get more value from it and for students discovering it for the first time.
