Download or read book Recovering the U S Hispanic Literary Heritage Volume V written by Kenya Dworkin y M?ndez and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2006-05-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays marks the fifteenth year of archival and critical work conducted under the auspices of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project at the University of Houston. This ongoing and comprehensive program seeks to locate, identify, preserve, and disseminate the literary contributions of U.S. Latinos from the Spanish Colonial Period to contemporary times. The contributors explore key issues and challenges in this project, such as the issue of its legitimacy and acceptance in teh academic canon, whether the basic archival phase of the Recovery Project is complete, and if teh assumption that there is widespread recognition of the existence and vitality of a centuries-long U.S. Hispanic literary tradition may be premature and perhaps imprudent. Originally presented at the biennial conferences of the Recovery project, the essays are divided in five sections: "Rethinking Latino/a Subject Positions," "Negotiating Cultural Authority and the Canon," "Orality, Performance, and the Archive," "Re-Contextualizing Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton," and "Bibliographic Reports." Covering a wide range of topics, essays include "Bending Chicano Identity and Experience in Arturo Isla's Early Borderland Short Stories," "Recovering Mexican America in the Classroom," and "Early New Mexican Criticism: The Case of Breve Resena de la literatura hispana de Nuevo Mexico y Colorado." In their introduction, editors Kenya Dworkin y Mendez and Agnes Lugo-Ortiz give an overview of the editorial framing of the previous volumes in the series and discuss the significant research issues and agendas raised over the past fifteen years. This volume, like the ones that precede it, is bilingual, confirming the cultural politics that have animated the Recovery Project since its inception: the understanding that the U.S. is a complex multicultural and multilingual society.
Download or read book Folklore and Culture on the Texas Mexican Border written by Am Paredes and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an illustrious career spanning over forty years, Américo Paredes has often set the standard for scholarship and writing in folklore and Chicano studies. In folklore, he has been in the vanguard of important theoretical and methodological movements. In Chicano studies, he stands as one of the premier exponents. Paredes's books are widely known and easily available, but his scholarly articles are not so familiar or accessible. To bring them to a wider readership, Richard Bauman has selected eleven essays that eloquently represent the range and excellence of Paredes's work. The hardcover edition of Folklore and Culture was published in 1993. This paperback edition will make the book more accessible to the general public and more practical for classroom use.

Download or read book Cervantes Volume 1 written by R. M. Flores and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1988-03-01 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No original manuscript of Don Quixote, nor of any other work by Cervantes exists, and so scholars studying this important novel have had to rely on corrected and modernized versions of the first printed texts. Following his pivotal work on the compositors of the first editions of Don Quixote I and II, where he shows that the typographical and orthographic inconsistencies are the result of spelling preferences by the early typesetters, R.M. Flores now offers Cervantes scholars a complete typographical analysis of the first editions of Don Quixote (Part I, Madrid 1605; Part II, Madrid 1615). This old-spelling edition of Don Quixote is the first ever to take all the typographical and textual evidence into consideration. It provides scholars with a text closer to that of Cervantes's original manuscript than any previous edition and includes: - detailed bibliographical descriptions of the copies of the first editions used as editor's copy; - all pertinent information concerning the editorial policy; - detailed and complete lists of all the readings replaced, set side by side with the editorial corrections; - a text that reproduces the non-incidental seventeenth-century typographical and orthographic peculiarities of the first editions; and - sequential line numbering for the entire text and bibliographical data pertaining to the part, section or chapter, signature, and first (fifth, tenth, etc.) line of the text of the first editions.
