Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of 1973, Alphonse Giordano is the unquestioned king of the New York underworld, supported by a secret society of enforcers, earners, and influencers who manipulate the city conditions to their own ends. Foremost on their mind is the construction of a Manhattan high-rise, a project they hope can provide them with a once-in-a-lifetime score, if only the right buttons are pressed. And press them Al does, no matter the risk or cost of human life. However, his actions draw unwanted attention from both sides of the law until the friction becomes too much. Something must give. And the city will never be the same. Uncover the truth of the story along with V, a struggling writer determined to sift through the ashes, no matter the implications.

Download or read book The Washingtons Volume 7 Part 1 written by Justin Glenn and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the seventh volume of Dr. Justin Glenn’s comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential line” of the Washingtons. Volume one began with the immigrant John Washington, who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and became the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It continued the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Volume two highlighted notable members of the next eight generations, including such luminaries as General George S. Patton, the author Shelby Foote, and the actor Lee Marvin. Volume three traced the ancestry of the early Virginia members of this “Presidential Branch” back to the royalty and nobility of England and continental Europe. Volumes four, five, and six treated respectively generations eight, nine, and ten. Volume Seven presents generation eleven, comprising more than 10,000 descendants of the immigrant John Washington. Although structured in a genealogical format for the sake of clarity, this is no bare bones genealogy but a true family history with over 1,200 detailed biographical narratives. These strive to convey the greatness of the family that produced not only The Father of His Country but many others, great and humble, who struggled to build that country. Volume Seven, Part One covers the descendants of the immigrant’s children Lawrence and John Washington, Jr. Volume Seven, Part Two covers the descendants of the immigrant’s child Anne (Washington) Wright.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researching Barak Bassman’s maternal and paternal ancestors takes us back nearly 300 years to small villages in Poland and in the Russian Empire, where these men and women struggled to eke out a living, to live a Jewish life, and to endure the perils of anti-Semitism. Later we track the family’s emigration to the “Golden Land” of America, as well as the horrible deaths of those who remained in Europe and perished in the Holocaust. A close look into some family members’ archival documents from America reveals the tragic consequences of the abject poverty in which they lived. Yet throughout, our research of Barak Bassman’s ancestors has documented their tenacity to survive and make a better life for their children and future generations.

Download or read book American Airpower Comes of Age written by General Henry H. Arnold and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume has richly enhanced General Henry H. "Hap" Arnold's reputation as the father of today's United States Air Force. Major General John W. Huston, himself an Army Air Forces combat veteran of the war, has edited each of Arnold's World War II diaries and placed them in their historical context while explaining the problems Hap faced and evaluating the results of his travels. General Huston, a professional historian, has taught at both the US Air Force Academy and the US Naval Academy. A former Chief of the Office of Air Force History and an experienced researcher both here and abroad in the personal and official papers of the war's leaders, he has been careful to let Hap speak for himself. The result is an account of the four-year odyssey that took Arnold to every continent but one as he took part in deliberations that involved Allied leaders in major diplomacy/strategy meetings with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S Truman, Winston Churchill, Josef Stalin, Charles de Gaulle, and Chiang Kai-shek. At those meetings, Hap recorded the comments of the various participants. His 12 diaries contain his own thoughts, which range from being lost over the Himalayas to comforting the wounded as they were airlifted from the Normandy beaches. He experienced an air raid in London and viewed the carnage in recently liberated Manila. Arnold recorded his honest impressions, from private meetings with King George VI in Buckingham Palace to eating from mess kits with his combat crews in the North African desert - all while perceptively commenting on the many issues involved and assessing the people, the culture, and the surroundings. This volume offers the best assessment we have of Hap as he survived four wartime heart attacks and continued to work tirelessly for proper recognition of airpower. It will also continue my emphasis while Chief of Staff of the US Air Force on encouraging professional reading through making historical accounts available to personnel of the finest air force in the world, a success achieved in large part because of Hap Arnold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is not a trace of the provincial nor the apologetic in the tone of the State of Mind texts. Rather there is a justified claim for the sophisticated originality of this Californian art—sophisticated because the authors have convincingly argued that the artists, for the most part, had many conscious connections and familiarity with art from the rest of the country and Europe, yet were driven by a desire to be independent and different." —Moira Roth, editor and contributor, The Amazing Decade: Women and Performance Art in America 1970-1980 "State of Mind: New California Art circa 1970 is an essential overview of the rich and complex moment when California assumed its role as a leading center for the making and exhibition of the kind of adventurous and progressive art that immediately fascinated the world, and over the years has come to define a generation and a region. An unmatched source of hard-to-find primary images combined with thought-provoking critical essays, this book can easily function as a standard text on this subject.” —David Ross, former director of SFMOMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and currently Chairman of the MFA program in Art Practice at The School of Visual Arts
