Download or read book Gender Religion and Domesticity in the Novels of Rosa Nouchette Carey written by Elaine Hartnell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. Rosa Nouchette Carey (1840-1909), the English author of forty-one ’domestic’ novels, was continuously in print from 1868 until at least 1924 and yet she is virtually unknown today. This first in-depth study of Carey’s work assesses both her immense popularity and her subsequent fall from favour. Organized thematically, it engages with the historical and cultural context of the novels as well as comparing them with the work of Carey’s contemporaries. Matters such as Carey’s creative response towards spinsterhood, her provision of vicarious male approval and her valorization of housework are perceived as functions of her writing that lie beyond formal literary criticism. This is not to deny the literary value of Carey’s work; rather it is to make intelligible its value to a large and enthusiastic readership despite an undoubted lack of appreciation on the part of reviewers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queenie's Whim: A Novel 'A little way, a very little way (Life is so short), they dig into the rind, And they are very sorry, so they say, - Sorry for what they find.' - Jean Ingelow. One always thinks the history of the ugly duckling one of the truest and most pathetic of all stories. It commences in the sad minor key, a long prelude of oppression, of misunderstanding. The unknown creature, sombre of plumage, makes no way among its companions; its folded-up beauties remain hidden. The duck-pond represents the world. Amidst plenty of quackery and folly the weaker goes to the wall. By and by the key changes; the long neck arches above the weeds; amid a burst of triumph the ugly duckling sails away into fairy-land a beautiful swan. After all there is a wonderful moral hidden under these quaint old stories. Beauty and goodness always go together; the ugly sister, dropping toads instead of diamonds and roses, is only the poetical incarnation of envy and discontent; truth and mercy and kindness to the aged always unfold themselves under the garb of a beautiful young girl. And so the children glean precious stones of wisdom, odd-shaped and many-coloured, out of the fanciful borders of fairy-land. Queenie Marriott once compared herself and her little sister Emmie to the ugly duckling of the fable. 'There must be two of them, ' she said; 'only it was dubious whether either of them would become swans.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often hear that gaining the vote was the first major legal change for women in this country; the subject is now included as a part of our national curriculum. We have undoubtedly come a long way; women today lead very different lives to ones they led in the past. But how did we get here? Do you know what actually happened between the time when a wife was expected to be submissive to her husband, treated as a second-class citizen and confined to her domestic sphere, and the liberating time when women finally achieved the financial and legal independence that could be so easily taken for granted? This had to be achieved before the vote was even won! Western women today have the privilege of a relatively equal footing, but all around us, we hear stories of women in other cultures who are in the process of obtaining this freedom, or who are still desperately fighting for it. We have been there – the parallels are obvious, we only have to look back. Changing the Rules looks at how children were conditioned to play their future parts in the marriage game and how Victorian women went on to challenge the rules of play. By listening to the women’s voices and by sharing their own, often shocking experiences, you will learn to appreciate just how difficult their task was, and why we should not undervalue their achievement. This fascinating look back into women’s history will appeal to those with an interest in the Victorian period, as well as readers wishing to learn more about the struggles that women faced.
