Download or read book Queen of the Virgins written by M. Cynthia Oliver and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauty pageants are wildly popular in the U.S. Virgin Islands, outnumbering any other single performance event and capturing the attention of the local people from toddlers to seniors. Local beauty contests provide women opportunities to demonstrate talent, style, the values of black womanhood, and the territory's social mores. Queen of the Virgins: Pageantry and Black Womanhood in the Caribbean is a comprehensive look at the centuries-old tradition of these expressions in the Virgin Islands. M. Cynthia Oliver maps the trajectory of pageantry from its colonial precursors at tea meetings, dance dramas, and street festival parades to its current incarnation as the beauty pageant or “queen show.” For the author, pageantry becomes a lens through which to view the region's understanding of gender, race, sexuality, class, and colonial power. Focusing on the queen show, Oliver reveals its twin roots in slave celebrations that parodied white colonial behavior and created Creole royal rituals and celebrations heavily influenced by Africanist aesthetics. Using the U.S. Virgin Islands as an intriguing case study, Oliver shows how the pageant continues to reflect, reinforce, and challenge Caribbean cultural values concerning femininity. Queen of the Virgins examines the journey of the black woman from degraded body to vaunted queen and how this progression is marked by social unrest, growing middle-class sensibilities, and contemporary sexual and gender politics.

Book excerpt: Dragon Blade It all started when a lowly computer programmer discovered he had been hypnotized with a false identity. He was somebody. Better than that, he was a hero in another world that direly needed him back. Jim Foley inadvertently dragged his company's best secretary, Summer Quinn, along with him for the trip back to his magical home of Calladrin as their romance was just budding. Home, Jim learned of his true name and heroic persona, Jalen Bloom, and that he was needed to destroy an evil plaguing the land called Black Death. Once creating the magic talisman, Dragon Blade, Jim defeated Black Death, his army, destroyed the talisman in the process, and brought Summer home, making her Mrs. Foley. Dragon Flute After quitting his programming job, Jim Foley started Dragonsoft, the family-owned laptop business that ran successfully for fifteen years. All was right in the world until Gillius, a dwarven ghost from Jim's old life, came to call him back home again. This time, Ralius, Jim's spitting image fifteen-yearold son, and Riel, Ralius's best elf friend, would come along as they hunted for the lost Dragon Flute. After a harrowing journey across a prehistoric sea with an intrepid crew aboard the giant royal ship dubbed the Tempest, the fabled object was finally obtained. Delbin, a powerful trickster demon who had threatened the subversion of Calladrin's kingdom under King Joel, as well as all the multiverses, was finally destroyed by the Dragon Flute, wielded by a fifteen-year-old. The land was restored to normal then, and the Blooms came back to Los Angeles in order to resume their normal lives with Ralius becoming the captain of the soccer team and discovering his love of writing. Dragon Dance Things have largely settled in the magical land of Calladrin over the last fifteen years. The various kingdoms, factions, and tribes have retreated to their strongholds to live their separate lives, and the super continent is at peace. King Jalen and Queen Summer Bloom have ruled their people fairly through this entire prosperous period. Prince Ralius, having returned to Los Angeles to study English, has become a professor of literature at the lovely beach side Pepperdine University. All seems right with life while Ralius, going as Dr. Foley now, teaches his classes and lives his happy yet somewhat lonely life with Ramses, his cat. His days are full of sunshine and the never-ending work of a university professor until, one day during lecture, the past comes back to haunt Dr.F. Being in the middle of a lecture about the Red Death, Dr. F is surprised by an old foe returning to settles cores. Like any good teacher, Dr. F's priority is to his students--TJ or Telemachus Jones, the athlete; Amy, the pacifist; Akim, the clown; and Bianca, a foreign exchange student and former model. Caught up in the struggle for supremacy over Calladrin, Dr. F has no choice but to take his university students with him back to Calladrin in order to keep them safe and to check on Mom and Dad. What follows is the final adventure in a series of mystical discoveries and epic battles as we greet familiar friends and make new ones, culminating in the third and final installment of the thrilling Dragon Talisman Trilogy.

Download or read book High Schools in Crisis written by Ellen Hall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes the degree of rage today's teenagers feel and how our nation's schools are failing them, not just academically, but in just about every way imaginable. Hall and Handley propose practical techniques, procedures, and core values that can make high school a safe learning environment once again. Drawing from their many years of experience administering a high school that provided a safe and fulfilling learning environment, they introduce readers to teaching techniques, administrative policies, and design ideas that encourage students to speak out, express their indomitable idealism, and feel welcome and accepted. The learning process works best when students are supported, encouraged, and accepted. The authors tell the story of a special school—Mountain View—that upholds a strong belief in the value of each student through smaller classes, experiential learning, and an awareness of community in and out of school. This book describes the journeys of students who were angry, unsure, or struggling with various labels of learning disabilities, as well as students who were successful in the traditional educational system but sought more opportunities for creativity and self-expression. Their stories are told in the context of how to build and run a school that is keenly attuned to teenagers' needs. Twenty Questions for Parents help to pinpoint issues and difficulties children may be struggling with. Also included is a bibliography of helpful sources and suggested readings. In keeping with the efforts of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support small high schools around the United States, this book provides a blueprint for parents, school districts, and communities.

By the 20th century, a small group of Portuguese immigrants had settled in the La Playa area in pursuit of a life on the sea. Today 19,717 make up San Diego's Portuguese community, where many of them still live in Point Loma.
Download or read book The Elizabethan Conquest of Ireland written by James Charles Roy and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen Elizabeth’s bloody rule over Ireland is examined in this “richly-textured, impressively researched and powerfully involving” history (Roy Foster, author of Modern Ireland, 1600–1972). England’s violent subjugation of Ireland in the sixteenth century under Queen Elizabeth I was one of the most consequential chapters in the long, tumultuous relationship between the two countries. In this engaging and scholarly history, James C. Roy tells the story of revolt, suppression, atrocities, and genocide in the first colonial “failed state”. At the time, Ireland was viewed as a peripheral theater, a haven for Catholic heretics, and a potential “back door” for foreign invasions. Tormented by such fears, lord deputies sent by the queen reacted with an iron hand. These men and their subordinates—including great writers such as Edmund spencer and Walter Raleigh—would gather in salons to pore over the “Irish Question”. But such deliberations were rewarded by no final triumph, only debilitating warfare that stretched across Elizabeth’s long rule.

Download or read book Enclosure Acts written by Richard Burt and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enclosure—the conversion of peasants' commonly held lands to privately owned pasture—has long been considered a critical stage in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. This book is the first, however, to treat in detail the literary and cultural implications of enclosure in early modern England. Bringing together the work of both senior and younger scholars who represent a wide range of critical orientations, Enclosure Acts focuses not only on the historical fact of land enclosure, but also on the symbolic containment of sexuality in Elizabethan and Jacobean literary works. The first type of enclosure frequently has been treated by materialists and new historicists; feminists and theorists concerned with issues of gender have tended to concentrate on the second. The fourteen essays collected here explore the relationships between these two ways of perceiving enclosure in the context of cultural studies. Individual chapters examine the creation of territorial and social boundaries as well as the consequences of enclosure acts.
