Book Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science Classic Reprint written by E. Ray Lankester and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science Johnston (4) erroneously regarded the brain as a double heart, the longitudinal nerve-stems as vessels. Several later authors have fallen into the same error. Rathke (5) carefully avoided it and describes the median and the two lateral longitudinal vessels of Linens. Quatrefages (7) in his Splendid treatise on this group of worms has given an accurate description of the circulatory system of certain Hoplonemertea. He, however, too peremptorily looked upon this description as applying to all Nemertea, whereas most considerable differences Obtain in the other groups. However, his figures have found their way into most Of the text-books of zoology as correctly illustrating the vascular system of the Nemertea indiscriminately. Book excerpt: The debate between proponents of Darwinism and those of Intelligent Design has reached the status of a full-scale public battle. With stories of qualifying statements about evolution in public school textbooks and the recent 70th anniversary of the Scopes Monkey trial in the news, the question about our origins will not be put to rest. Following up his award-winning Doubts about Darwin, Thomas Woodward traces the continuing saga of the ID movement in Darwin Strikes Back. Focusing on the emerging key players on both sides--Michael Behe, William Dembski, Kenneth Miller, Robert Pennock, and more--Woodward helps readers navigate the tangled maze of public debate, including anti-ID activism from Christians, and shows them what might be coming next.

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 25 1877

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 25 1877 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 1074 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 25 includes letters from 1877, the year in which Darwin published Forms of Flowers and with his son Francis carried out experiments on plant movement and bloom on plants. Darwin was awarded an honorary LL.D. by Cambridge University, and appeared in person to receive it. The volume contains a number of appendixes, including two on the albums of photograph sent to Darwin by his Dutch, German, and Austrian admirers.

Book A Body Worth Defending

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ed Cohen
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2009-10-16
  • ISBN : 0822391112
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book A Body Worth Defending written by Ed Cohen and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological immunity as we know it does not exist until the late nineteenth century. Nor does the premise that organisms defend themselves at the cellular or molecular levels. For nearly two thousand years “immunity,” a legal concept invented in ancient Rome, serves almost exclusively political and juridical ends. “Self-defense” also originates in a juridico-political context; it emerges in the mid-seventeenth century, during the English Civil War, when Thomas Hobbes defines it as the first “natural right.” In the 1880s and 1890s, biomedicine fuses these two political precepts into one, creating a new vital function, “immunity-as-defense.” In A Body Worth Defending, Ed Cohen reveals the unacknowledged political, economic, and philosophical assumptions about the human body that biomedicine incorporates when it recruits immunity to safeguard the vulnerable living organism. Inspired by Michel Foucault’s writings about biopolitics and biopower, Cohen traces the migration of immunity from politics and law into the domains of medicine and science. Offering a genealogy of the concept, he illuminates a complex of thinking about modern bodies that percolates through European political, legal, philosophical, economic, governmental, scientific, and medical discourses from the mid-seventeenth century through the twentieth. He shows that by the late nineteenth century, “the body” literally incarnates modern notions of personhood. In this lively cultural rumination, Cohen argues that by embracing the idea of immunity-as-defense so exclusively, biomedicine naturalizes the individual as the privileged focus for identifying and treating illness, thereby devaluing or obscuring approaches to healing situated within communities or collectives.
