Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarter Centennial Historical Sketch A review of those early times awakens conflicting emotions in the minds of those participating therein. The Directors, undertaking a work in which they neverbefore had been engaged, saw, afterward, wherein errors of judgment were committed, for which they found some excuse in their right intent and lack of experience. To bring the Seminary to its 'present stage of progress, has cost much care and labor on the part of the Directors and Professors - gladly again to be endured for completing a work so well begun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration: June 1, 1914 The Reverend Eben S. Stearns, principal of the Academy at the celebration of her semi - centennial, began his historical sketch for the occasion by noting that at the opening of the Academy in 1814 the country was at war: that, in much more terrible form, 1864 found her again absorbed in the endless horror of strife. The present sketch was to have been pre faced by a heartfelt Thank God that a second fifty years had put us beyond even the fear of blood. But - 1814, 1864 and 1914, and are we still to dream only of a land whose inhabitants shall have ceased to learn war any more? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches Relating to the First Quarter Century of the State Normal and Training School In this respect, we feel confident that great changes for the better are yet to be made, especially in the lower grades of our schools. Something, it is true, is now being done in this direction, and teachers in these departments have regular and daily exercises in object lessons; but for want of proper facilities much less is ac complished than could be desired. We trust that by the intro duction of proper text books as guides and models, as also charts, pictures, drawing and other aids, we may see advancement made in this direction from year to year, until brought to a high degree of perfection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cranston: A Historical Sketch Certain sketches of Cranston's history, among them the one con tained in the history of Providence County edited by Bayles, state that there were a number of movements looking toward a division of the town of Providence and the erection of new township in the western portion before the one which was finally successful in 1754. If this is the case, there is nothing in the state or town records bearing thereon, although as mentioned above Williams proposed in October of 1660 as a method of settling the territorial dispute which arose then a new pur chase from the original Indian owners and a new settlement in the dis triot in question, a plan which was rejected by the town of Providence. It was natural, however, that as the population of the western part of the town of Providence increased there should arise discussions of the, disadvantages of living remote from the place where the public bus' ness was transacted. Freeholders' meetings were held quarterly in the town of Providence, always in the compact portion at the head of the hay, and court was also held there. It is said that had the people in the westerly part of the town been able to agree upon a name for their proposed township they would have pressed their petition for a division of the old town long before they did. Some, however, insisted that a new town he formed under the name of Mashapaug, others wanted to take in part at Warwick and call it all Pawtuxet. Meshanticut and. Pocasset also had their supporters, and altogether the difficulty of a? Choice was serious enough to block action for nearly a century. In 1732' the supporters of a division came near success, but the name proved too much and action was again delayed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches, Vol. 2 Under these circumstances, perhaps, it is fair to lay down that, while every care must be taken against the introduction of new, or the omission of existing ideas, in translating the original text, yet, in a book intended for general reading, faithfulness may be considered simply to consist in expressing in English the sense of the original the actual words of the latter being viewed mainly as directions into its sense, and scholarship being necessary in order to gain the full insight into that sense which they afford; and next, that, where something must be sacri ficed, precision or intelligibility, it is better in a popular work to be understood by those who are not critics, than to be applauded by those who are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of the Widow's House at Bethlehem, Pa., 1768-1892 From the establishment of the Moravian Church in the Province of Pennsylvania, our forefathers, appreciating that helplessness and old age should be the objects of a peculiar tenderness and sympathy, introduced the plan adopted by the Mother Church, by which there could be but little poverty and no destitution among those who had devoted their best years or lives to her service. The same spirit, therefore, which led to the erection of the other Choir Houses in Bethlehem, led to the building of the Widows' House, which for nearly a century and a quarter has afforded its inmates the comforts of a retired home.
