Book excerpt: The duality between partonic and hadronic descriptions of physical phenomena is one of the most remarkable features of strong interaction physics. A classic example of this is in electron-nucleon scattering, in which low-energy cross sections, when averaged over appropriate energy intervals, are found to exhibit the scaling behavior expected from perturbative QCD. We present a comprehensive review of data on structure functions in the resonance region, from which the global and local aspects of duality are quantified, including its flavor, spin and nuclear medium dependence. To interpret the experimental findings, we discuss various theoretical approaches which have been developed to understand the microscopic origins of quark-hadron duality in QCD. Examples from other reactions are used to place duality in a broader context, and future experimental and theoretical challenges are identified.

Book excerpt: We present some recent developments in the study of quark-hadron duality in structure functions in the resonance region. To understand the workings of local duality we introduce the concept of truncated moments, which are used to describe the Q^2 dependence of specific resonance regions within a QCD framework.

Book Quark hadron Duality in Electron nucleon Scattering

Book excerpt: Quark-hadron duality addresses some of the most fundamental issues in strong interaction physics, in particular the nature of the transition from perturbative to nonperturbative QCD. In this talk I summarize recent developments in quark-hadron duality in lepton-hadron scattering, and outline how duality can be studied at future high-luminosity facilities such as the electron-ion collider. In its broadest form, quark-hadron duality postulates that physical quantities calculated in a quark-gluon basis should be identical to those evaluated in a hadronic basis. The phenomenon of duality shows up in many physical processes, such as ee− annihilation into hadrons, or semi-leptonic decays of heavy mesons. One of the more intriguing examples, initially observed some 30 years ago by Bloom and Gilman [1], is in inclusive inelastic electron-nucleon scattering.

Book Quark hadron Duality Constraints on gamma Z Box Corrections to Parity violating Elastic Scattering

Download or read book Quark hadron Duality Constraints on gamma Z Box Corrections to Parity violating Elastic Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we examine the interference $\gamma Z$ box corrections to parity-violating elastic electron-proton scattering in the light of the recent observation of quark-hadron duality in parity-violating deep-inelastic scattering from the deuteron at low $Q^2$. Using the similarity of electromagnetic and $\gamma Z$ structure function moments and those extracted from leading twist parton distributions down to $Q^2 \approx 1$~GeV$^2$, we find that duality constrains the $\gamma Z$ box correction to $\Re \square_{\gamma Z}^V = (5.4 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-3}$ at the kinematics of the Q-weak experiment. Within the same model we also provide estimates of the $\gamma Z$ corrections for future experiments, such as MOLLER at Jefferson Lab and MESA at Mainz.

Book Quark Hadron Duality in Inclusive Electron Nucleus Scattering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent inclusive electron-nucleus scattering data have been utilized for precision tests of quark-hadron duality. The data are in the resonance and quasielastic regions and cover a range in Q2 from 0.5 to 7 (GeV/c)2. The Q2 dependence of the moments of the F2 structure function were investigated and indicate that duality holds for nuclei, even at low Q2.

Book Lepton Scattering and Quark Hadron Duality Studies at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Lepton Scattering and Quark Hadron Duality Studies at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At high enough energies asymptotic freedom guarantees the deep inelastic scattering cross sections to be calculated as nearly free electron-quark scattering. However, confinement guarantees that the experimentally observed final states particles are hadrons. Low-energy quark hadron duality suggests that the hadronic cross sections, when averaged over an appropriate energy range, nevertheless coincide with the naive leading-twist quark-gluon calculations. Deep inelastic inclusive scattering shows that scaling at modest Q2 and v already arises from very few resonance channels. This is reflected by the striking agreement (10%) between data in the nucleon resonance region and the deep inelastic (W24GeV2) region for the Q2>0.5 (GeV/c)2, known as the Bloom-Gilman duality. Electron-hadron scattering allows for further investigation of quark-hadron duality by virtue of its ability to select resonances, by tagging with either spin or flavor.

Book Modeling Quark hadron Duality for Relativistic Confined Fermions

Download or read book Modeling Quark hadron Duality for Relativistic Confined Fermions written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss a model for the study of quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron scattering based on solving the Dirac equation numerically for a scalar confining linear potential and a vector color Coulomb potential. We qualitatively reproduce the features of quark-hadron duality for all potentials considered, and discuss similarities and differences to previous models that simplified the situation by treating either the quarks or all particles as scalars. We discuss the scaling results for PWIA and FSI, and the approach to scaling using the analog of the Callan-Gross relation for y-scaling.

Book Quark Hadron Duality

Book excerpt: I review recent developments in the study of quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron scattering in the resonance-scaling transition region. Results on matrix elements of twist-4 operators extracted from moments of the spin-dependent g1 structure function suggest that duality violating higher twists are small above Q2 (almost equal to) 1 GeV2. The systematics of the x dependence of local duality are analyzed within a quark model framework, and mechanisms are identified for spin-flavor symmetry breaking which underpin the behavior of structure functions at large x.

Book Quark hadron Duality in Neutrino Scattering

Book excerpt: We present a phenomenological model of the quark-hadron transition in neutrino-nucleon scattering. Using recently extracted weak nucleon transition form factors, we investigate the extent to which local and global quark-hadron duality is applicable in the neutrino F1, F2 and F3 structure functions, and contrast this with duality in electron scattering. Our findings suggest that duality works relatively well for neutrino-nucleon scattering for the F2 and F3 structure functions, but not as well for F1. We also calculate the quasi-elastic, resonance and deep inelastic contributions to the Adler sum rule, and find it to be satisfied to within 10% for 0.5

Book Resonance Region to DIS Quark hadron Duality at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Resonance Region to DIS Quark hadron Duality at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New measurements of inclusive electron scattering on the proton and deuteron have been made at Jefferson Lab with a four-momentum transfer range of 0.3 lte Q2 lte 4.5 (GeV/c)2 as a study of quark-hadron duality at low Q2. The F2 structure function is found to scale about a common scaling curve down to Q2 of 0.5 (GeV/c)2, indicating that higher twist effects are small. Duality in other observables and in electron scattering on nuclei are also discussed.

Book Modeling Quark hadron Duality in Spin Observables

Download or read book Modeling Quark hadron Duality in Spin Observables written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We apply a model for the study of quark-hadron duality in inclusive electron scattering to the calculation of spin observables. The model is based on solving the Dirac equation numerically for a scalar confining linear potential and a vector color Coulomb potential. We qualitatively reproduce the features of quark-hadron duality for all potentials considered, and discuss the onset of scaling and duality for the responses, spin structure functions, and polarization asymmetries. Duality may be applied to gain access to kinematic regions which are hard to access in deep inelastic scattering, namely for x{sub Bj} --> 1, and we discuss which observables are most suitable for this application of duality.
