Book Quantum Safety

Download or read book Quantum Safety written by Paul Stretton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most comprehensive review of health and safety in half a century. Most organisational approaches to health and safety are based on the methodology developed during the 1970s, and despite the workplace changing beyond recognition since that time, these approaches have remained untouched. Quantum Safety will develop a new understanding fit for the modern workplace. Quantum Safety is an approach that is part of the "new view" debate. There have been a number of other new approaches to health and safety in recent years, and while they all have merit and improve understanding to help create the optimal, safe working environment, they have failed to significantly create the change desired. These approaches are often flawed at the philosophical or conceptual level or propose a solution without a pathway to implement the principles in safety-critical environments. Quantum Safety: The New Approach to Risk Management for the Complex Workplace is founded on a wholesale critical analysis of the conceptual foundations of health and safety before translating the revised principles into a tangible methodology. Central to the development of Quantum Safety is the application of Complexity Science. The traditional approach to health and safety is considered to be Newtonian – it uses linear models and deterministic analysis. Quantum Safety, due to the full consideration of Complexity Science, introduces multidimensional models and develops analysis based on probabilities. Crucially, this does not render Newtonian methodologies as worthless – in the same manner that Newtonian physics was able to take mankind to the moon, but required the quantum understanding within computers to make it possible – Quantum Safety provides the mechanisms to complete organisations’ safety-based journeys. The new mechanisms are fully developed for the reader at both macro and micro levels. How an organisation measures safety and what it values are reset and re-examined. How we investigate adverse events and the consequential actions taken with employees to develop a true Just Culture within a high-performing culture are also completely revised. Essentially, Quantum Safety creates a pathway for understanding health and safety in the complex modern world. To achieve that, new models are introduced to replace the dated, simple tools and a new language is developed to communicate this powerful approach. It will help propel an organisation from considering safety within a concept of industrialised failure avoidance to valuing safety as an integrated aspect of high performance.

Book Toward a Quantum Safe Communication Infrastructure

Download or read book Toward a Quantum Safe Communication Infrastructure written by R. Steinwandt and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accelerating pace at which quantum computing is developing makes it almost inevitable that some of the major cryptographic algorithms and protocols we rely on daily, for everything from internet shopping to running our critical infrastructure, may be compromised in the coming years. This book presents 11 papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Quantum and Post-Quantum Cryptography, hosted in Malta in November 2021. The workshop set out to understand and reconcile two seemingly divergent points of view on post-quantum cryptography and secure communication: would it be better to deploy post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) algorithms or quantum key distribution (QKD)? The workshop brought these two communities together to work towards a future in which the two technologies are seen as complementary solutions to secure communication systems at both a hardware (QKD) and software (PQC) level, rather than being in competition with each other. Subjects include the education of an adequate workforce and the challenges of adjusting university curricula for the quantum age; whether PQC and QKD are both required to enable a quantum-safe future and the case for hybrid approaches; and technical aspects of implementing quantum-secure communication systems. The efforts of two NATO nations to address the possible emergence of cryptanalytically-relevant quantum computers are explored, as are two cryptographic applications which go beyond the basic goal of securing two-party communication in a post-quantum world. The book includes economic and broader societal perspectives as well as the strictly technical, and adds a helpful, new contribution to this conversation.

Book Asymptotic Safety and Black Holes

Download or read book Asymptotic Safety and Black Holes written by Kevin Falls and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the open challenges in fundamental physics is to combine Einstein's theory of general relativity with the principles of quantum mechancis. In this thesis, the question is raised whether metric quantum gravity could be fundamental in the spirit of Steven Weinberg's seminal asymptotic safety conjecture, and if so, what are the consequences for the physics of small, possibly Planck-size black holes? To address the first question, new techniques are provided which allow, for the first time, a self-consistent study of high-order polynomial actions including up to 34 powers in the Ricci scalar. These novel insights are then exploited to explain quantum gravity effects in black holes, including their horizon and causal structure, conformal scaling, evaporation, and the thermodynamics of quantum space-time. Results indicate upper limits on black hole temperature, and the existence of small black holes based on asymptotic safety for gravity and thermodynamical arguments.

  • ISBN : 030947969X
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Quantum Computing written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-04-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics, the subfield of physics that describes the behavior of very small (quantum) particles, provides the basis for a new paradigm of computing. First proposed in the 1980s as a way to improve computational modeling of quantum systems, the field of quantum computing has recently garnered significant attention due to progress in building small-scale devices. However, significant technical advances will be required before a large-scale, practical quantum computer can be achieved. Quantum Computing: Progress and Prospects provides an introduction to the field, including the unique characteristics and constraints of the technology, and assesses the feasibility and implications of creating a functional quantum computer capable of addressing real-world problems. This report considers hardware and software requirements, quantum algorithms, drivers of advances in quantum computing and quantum devices, benchmarks associated with relevant use cases, the time and resources required, and how to assess the probability of success.

Book Quantum Computing in Cybersecurity

Download or read book Quantum Computing in Cybersecurity written by Romil Rawat and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine learning, deep learning, probabilistic neural networks, blockchain, and other new technologies all demand extremely high processing speeds. A quantum computer is an example of such a system. Quantum computers may be accessed over the internet. This technology poses a significant risk, since quantum terrorists, or cyber criminals, coul be able to cause many problems, including bringing down the internet. The principles of quantum mechanics might be used by evil doers to destroy quantum information on a global scale, and an entire class of suspicious codes could destroy data or eavesdrop on communication. Quantum physics, however, safeguards against data eavesdropping. A significant amount of money is being invested in developing and testing a quantum version of the internet that will eliminate eavesdropping and make communication nearly impenetrable to cyber-attacks. The simultaneous activation of quantum terrorists (organized crime) can lead to significant danger by attackers introducing quantum information into the network, breaking the global quantum state, and preventing the system from returning to its starting state. Without signs of identifying information and real-time communication data, such vulnerabilities are very hard to discover. Terrorists' synchronized and coordinated acts have an impact on security by sparking a cyber assault in a fraction of a second. The encryption is used by cyber-criminal groups with the genuine, nefarious, and terrible motives of killing innocent people or stealing money. In the hands of criminals and codes, cryptography is a dangerous and formidable weapon. Small amounts of digital information are hidden in a code string that translates into an image on the screen, making it impossible for the human eye to identify a coded picture from its uncoded equivalents. To steal the cryptographic key necessary to read people's credit card data or banking information, cyber thieves employ installed encryption techniques, human mistakes, keyboard loggers, and computer malware. This new volume delves into the latest cutting-edge trends and the most up-to-date processes and applications for quantum computing to bolster cybersecurity. Whether for the veteran computer engineer working in the field, other computer scientists and professionals, or for the student, this is a one-stop-shop for quantum computing in cyber security and a must have for any library.

Book An Introduction To Covariant Quantum Gravity And Asymptotic Safety

Download or read book An Introduction To Covariant Quantum Gravity And Asymptotic Safety written by Roberto Percacci and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers recent developments in the covariant formulation of quantum gravity. Developed in the 1960s by Feynman and DeWitt, by the 1980s this approach seemed to lead nowhere due to perturbative non-renormalizability. The possibility of non-perturbative renormalizability or 'asymptotic safety', originally suggested by Weinberg but largely ignored for two decades, was revived towards the end of the century by technical progress in the field of the renormalization group. It is now a very active field of research, providing an alternative to other approaches to quantum gravity.Written by one of the early contributors to this subject, this book provides a gentle introduction to the relevant ideas and calculational techniques. Several explicit calculations gradually bring the reader close to the current frontier of research. The main difficulties and present lines of development are also outlined.

Book Quantum International Relations

Download or read book Quantum International Relations written by James Der Derian and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume are motivated by a common apprehension and a common hope. The apprehension was first voiced by Einstein, who lamented the inability of humanity, at the individual and social level, to keep up with the increased speed of technological change brought about by the quantum revolution. As quantum science and technology fast forward into the 21st century, the social sciences remain stuck in classical, 19th century ways of thinking. Can such a mechanistic model of the mind and society possibly help us manage the fully realized technological potential of the quantum? That's where the hope appears: that perhaps quantum is not just a physical science, but a human science too. In Quantum International Relations, James Der Derian and Alexander Wendt gather rising scholars and leading experts to make the case for quantum approaches to world politics. As a fundamental theory of reality and enabler of new technologies, quantum now touches everything, with the potential to revolutionize how we conduct diplomacy, wage war, and make wealth. Contributors present the core principles of quantum mechanics--entanglement, uncertainty, superposition, and the wave function--as significant catalysts and superior heuristics for an accelerating quantum future. Facing a reality which no longer corresponds to an outdated Newtonian worldview of states as billiard balls, individuals as rational actors or power as objective interest, Der Derian and Wendt issue an urgent call for a new human science of quantum International Relations. At the centenary of the first quantum thought experiment in the 1920s, this book offers a diversity of explorations, speculations and approaches for understanding geopolitics in the 21st century.

Book Quantum Computing and the Financial System Spooky Action at a Distance

Download or read book Quantum Computing and the Financial System Spooky Action at a Distance written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of quantum computing is about to begin, with profound implications for the global economy and the financial system. Rapid development of quantum computing brings both benefits and risks. Quantum computers can revolutionize industries and fields that require significant computing power, including modeling financial markets, designing new effective medicines and vaccines, and empowering artificial intelligence, as well as creating a new and secure way of communication (quantum Internet). But they would also crack many of the current encryption algorithms and threaten financial stability by compromising the security of mobile banking, e-commerce, fintech, digital currencies, and Internet information exchange. While the work on quantum-safe encryption is still in progress, financial institutions should take steps now to prepare for the cryptographic transition, by assessing future and retroactive risks from quantum computers, taking an inventory of their cryptographic algorithms (especially public keys), and building cryptographic agility to improve the overall cybersecurity resilience.
