Book excerpt: The notion that fundamental equations governing the motions of physical systems are invariant under the time reversal transformation (T) has been an important, but often subliminal, element in the development of theoretical physics. It serves as a powerful and useful tool in analyzing the structure of matter at all scales, from gases and condensed matter to subnuclear physics and the quantum theory of fields. The assumption of invariance under T was called into question, however, by the 1964 discovery that a closely related assumption, that of CP invariance (where C is charge conjugation and P is space inversion), is violated in the decay of neutral K mesons. In The Physics of Time Reversal, Robert G. Sachs comprehensively treats the role of the transformation T, both as a tool for analyzing the structure of matter and as a field of fundamental research relating to CP violation. For this purpose he reformulates the definitions of T, P, and C so as to avoid subliminal assumptions of invariance. He summarizes the standard phenomenology of CP violation in the K-meson system and addresses the question of the mysterious origin of CP violation. Using simple examples based on the standard quark model, Sachs summarizes and illustrates how these phenomenological methods can be extended to analysis of future experiments on heavy mesons. He notes that his reformulated approach to conventional quantum field theory leads to new questions about the meaning of the transformations in the context of recent theoretical developments such as non-Abelian gauge theories, and he suggests ways in which these questions may lead to new directions of research.

The foundational transformation of QED brings a plethora of new fundamental scientific discoveries. An example is weak electromagnetism as the second branch of electromagnetism with weak electric charge and weak Planck constant. Both values are established with the precision of ten digits. As turned out, the electron is not a fundamental (intrinsic) fermion, as claimed by the Standard Model for many decades. The electron is a composite fermion of electromagnetism and weak electromagnetism, consisting of the intrinsic electron and the electron neutrino. The electron neutrino has a duo-configuration, consisting of the intrinsic neutrino and the intrinsic antineutrino of opposite helicity. Both, the intrinsic neutrino and the intrinsic antineutrino are exclusive carriers of weak electric charge. The anomalous magnetic moment of the electron has been studied experimentally and theoretically since 1947 Kush measurements. The Standard Model explains the anomaly as a result of contribution interactions, principally by QED. Nothing can be further from the truth. According to Aphysical Quantum Mechanics, so-called "anomaly" is the magnetic moment of the electron neutrino, a constituent of the electron. The electron magnetic moment is a sum of the intrinsic electron magnetic moment equal to one Bohr magneton, and the electron neutrino magnetic moment equal two times of weak Bohr magneton. A long-standing problem of electron neutrino self-mass is resolved and the self-mass is determined with the precision of five digits. The detailed process of the electron formation (for example, following muon decay) is discovered and described instant-by-instant in spacetime dynamics. The corset action brings a newly formed electron from classical world into quantum world by reducing its size almost instantaneously by more that ten orders of magnitude with the energy conservation law observed.

Book excerpt: On April 20, 1951, Léon Van Hove presented his thesis “Sur certaines représentations unitaires d'un groupe infini de transformations' to the Université libre de Bruxelles (Free University of Brussels), two days before the University of Grenoble had approved the creation of L'Ecole d'été de physique théorique at Les Houches (Haute Savoie, France). The first session of the “Ecole des Houches” began on July 15, 1951, with a month-long course by Van Hove on quantum mechanics. The lecture notes for this course were written for the benefit of physicists who — like most of their colleagues outside the US, Canada, and England at that time — did not know quantum mechanics but wanted to learn it seriously. Van Hove's course met their expectations fully. The physics course benefitted from the mathematical expertise of the lecturer, which is also apparent in this thesis. Without his own research as scaffolding, Van Hove could not have built the short and beautiful course which provided the participants with a solid, useful foundation in modern physics.The lecture notes are in French. If they had been in English they would have been published together with the translation of the thesis. The first three pages of the notes are reproduced at the end of this book. The set of notes was reproduced by stencils and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the course.The translation of Léon Van Hove's thesis was initiated in late 2000, when Bob Hermann, formerly in the Department of Mathematics at MIT, sent to Van Hove's son Michel his view on the thesis: “I would consider it as one of the most important mathematical physics papers of the past fifty years, containing the key ideas for what has become known as ‘geometric quantization.’” Indeed, the thesis is interesting both to historians of science and to theoretical physicists and mathematicians exploring the relationships between quantum and classical physics, based on the Hilbert-space approach to classical mechanics.
