Book Excitations in Two Dimensional and Three Dimensional Quantum Fluids

Download or read book Excitations in Two Dimensional and Three Dimensional Quantum Fluids written by A.F.G. Wyatt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of quantum fluids in three dimensions has been an important area for many years as it embraces Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluidity and macroscopic quantisation. These are fundamental aspects of physics which can be studied in liquid 4He. In contrast, quantum fluids in two dimension is more recent and less developed. Nevertheless it has shown many interesting phenomena including a rich variety of phases and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Intermediate between these dimensions are the restricted geometries of micro porous materials into which He may be introduced. The main quantum materials considered are 4He, 3He, D2, H2, H and electrons on the surface of 4He. The superfluid phases of 3He were excluded, e~cept for superfluid film flow, as 3He involves a separate set of problems. These proceedings arise from a lively Advanced Research Workshop on Excitations in Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Quantum Fluids held in Exeter 10-15 August 1990. Fifty scientists took part and each provided a written contribution. Perhaps it is a testimony to the discussions that several papers were revised by the authors after the meeting. The order of the chapters is the same as the presentations at the workshop. This arrangement starts with 4He in three dimensions which establishes a base from which the two dimensional properties can be viewed. At the end of each section there is a report on the discussion session. These are interesting and useful chapters as they clarify points made in the papers and define the boundary of current understanding.

Download or read book Novel Superfluids written by Karl-Heinz Bennemann and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the latest developments in the field of Superfluidity. The phenomenon has had a tremendous impact on the fundamental sciences as well as a host of technologies. It began with the discovery of superconductivity in mercury in 1911, which was ultimately described theoretically by the theory of Bardeen Cooper and Schriever (BCS) in 1957. The analogous phenomena, superfluidity, was discovered in helium in 1938 and tentatively explained shortly thereafter as arising from a Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) by London. But the importance of superfluidity, and the range of systems in which it occurs, has grown enormously. In addition to metals and the helium liquids the phenomena has now been observed for photons in cavities, excitons in semiconductors, magnons in certain materials, and cold gasses trapped in high vacuum. It very likely exist for neutrons in a neutron star and, possibly, in a conjectured quark state at their center. Even the Universe itself can be regarded as being in a kind of superfluid state. All these topics are discussed by experts in the respective subfields.

Book Two Dimensional Coulomb Liquids and Solids

Download or read book Two Dimensional Coulomb Liquids and Solids written by Yuriy Monarkha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This coherent monograph describes and explains quantum phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems with extremely strong internal interactions, which cannot be described by the conventional Fermi-liquid approach. The central physical objects considered are the 2D Coulomb liquid, of which the average Coulomb interaction energy per electron is much higher than the mean kinetic energy, and the Wigner solid. The text provides a new and comprehensive review of the remarkable properties of Coulomb liquids and solids formed on the free surface of liquid helium and other interfaces. This book is intended for graduate students and researchers in the fields of quantum liquids, electronic properties of 2D systems, and solid-state physics. It includes different levels of sophistication so as to be useful for both theorists and experimentalists. The presentation is largely self-contained, and also describes some instructive examples that will be of general interest to solid-state physicists.

Book Excitations in a Bose condensed Liquid

Download or read book Excitations in a Bose condensed Liquid written by Allan Griffin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-08-19 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives an up-to-date, systematic account of the microscopic theory of Bose-condensed fluids developed since the late 1950s. In contrast to the usual phenomenological discussions of superfluid 4He, the present treatment is built on the pivotal role of the Bose broken symmetry and a Bose condensate. The many-body formalism is developed, with emphasis on the one- and two-particle Green's functions and their relation to the density response function. These are all coupled together by the Bose broken symmetry, which provides the basis for understanding the elementary excitations and response functions in the hydrodynamic and collisionless regions. It also explains the difference between excitations in the superfluid and normal phases. Chapter 4 gives the first critical assessment of the experimental evidence for a Bose condensate in liquid 4He, based on high-momentum neutron scattering data.

Book Quantum Liquids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony James Leggett
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2006-09-28
  • ISBN : 0191037214
  • Pages : 405 pages

Download or read book Quantum Liquids written by Anthony James Leggett and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from first principles, this book introduces the closely related phenomena of Bose condensation and Cooper pairing, in which a very large number of single particles or pairs of particles are forced to behave in exactly the same way, and explores their consequences in condensed matter systems. Eschewing advanced formal methods, the author uses simple concepts and arguments to account for the various qualitatively new phenomena which occur in Bose-condensed and Cooper-paired systems, including but not limited to the spectacular macroscopic phenomena of superconductivity and superfluidity. The physical systems discussed include liquid 4-He, the BEC alkali gases, "classical" superconductors, superfluid 3-He, "exotic" superconductors and the recently stabilized Fermi alkali gases. The book should be accessible to beginning graduate students in physics or advanced undergraduates.

Book Modern trends in Superconductivity and Superfluidity

Download or read book Modern trends in Superconductivity and Superfluidity written by M. Yu. Kagan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concisely presents the latest trends in the physics of superconductivity and superfluidity and magnetism in novel systems, as well as the problem of BCS-BEC crossover in ultracold quantum gases and high-Tc superconductors. It further illuminates the intensive exchange of ideas between these closely related fields of condensed matter physics over the last 30 years of their dynamic development. The content is based on the author’s original findings obtained at the Kapitza Institute, as well as advanced lecture courses he held at the Moscow Engineering Physical Institute, Amsterdam University, Loughborough University and LPTMS Orsay between 1994 and 2011. In addition to the findings of his group, the author discusses the most recent concepts in these fields, obtained both in Russia and in the West. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into four parts. The first part describes recent developments in superfluid hydrodynamics of quantum fluids and solids, including the fashionable subject of possible supersolidity in quantum crystals of 4He, while the second describes BCS-BEC crossover in quantum Fermi-Bose gases and mixtures, as well as in the underdoped states of cuprates. The third part is devoted to non-phonon mechanisms of superconductivity in unconventional (anomalous) superconductors, including some important aspects of the theory of high-Tc superconductivity. |The last part considers the anomalous normal state of novel superconductive materials and materials with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). The book offers a valuable guide for senior-level undergraduate students and graduate students, postdoctoral and other researchers specializing in solid-state and low-temperature physics.

  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1489925546
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Momentum Distributions written by Richard N. Silver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the Workshop on Momentum Distributions held on October 24 to 26, 1988 at Argonne National Laboratory. This workshop was motivated by the enormous progress within the past few years in both experimental and theoretical studies of momentum distributions, by the growing recognition of the importance of momentum distributions to the characterization of quantum many-body systems, and especially by the realization that momentum distribution studies have much in common across the entire range of modern physics. Accordingly, the workshop was unique in that it brought together researchers in nuclear physics, electronic systems, quantum fluids and solids, and particle physics to address the common elements of momentum distribution studies. The topics dis cussed in the workshop spanned more than ten orders of magnitude range in charac teristic energy scales. The workshop included an extraordinary variety of interactions from Coulombic to hard core repulsive, from non-relativistic to extreme relativistic.
