Book excerpt: This thesis offers a comprehensive introduction to surface acoustic waves in the quantum regime. It addresses two of the most significant technological challenges in developing a scalable quantum information processor based on spins in quantum dots: (i) decoherence of the electronic spin qubit due to the surrounding nuclear spin bath, and (ii) long-range spin-spin coupling between remote qubits. Electron spins confined in quantum dots (QDs) are among the leading contenders for implementing quantum information processing. To this end, the author pursues novel strategies that turn the unavoidable coupling to the solid-state environment (in particular, nuclear spins and phonons) into a valuable asset rather than a liability.

It starts with an introduction to the isotope physics and then describes of the isotope - based quantum information and quantum computation. The ability to manipulate and control electron and/or nucleus spin in semiconductor devices provides a new route to expand the capabilities of inorganic semiconductor-based electronics and to design innovative devices with potential application in quantum computing. One of the major challenges towards these objectives is to develop semiconductor-based systems and architectures in which the spatial distribution of spins and their properties can be controlled. For instance, to eliminate electron spin decoherence resulting from hyperfine interaction due to nuclear spin background, isotopically controlled devices are needed (i.e., nuclear spin-depleted). In other emerging concepts, the control of the spatial distribution of isotopes with nuclear spins is a prerequisite to implement the quantum bits (or qbits). Therefore, stable semiconductor isotopes are important elements in the development of solid-state quantum information. There are not only different algorithms of quantum computation discussed but also the different models of quantum computers are presented. With numerous illustrations this small book is of great interest for undergraduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectronics as well as quantum information, and academic and industrial researches working in this field.

Using a combination of ultrahigh resolution laser spectroscopy to study the physics of the dots and ultrafast laser technology to coherently control the spins, we made several advances. Our main achievements include working with a model system based on the exciton optical Bloch vector where we demonstrated the first solid state quantum logic device and made the first demonstration of quantum state tomography in a solid. We also were successful in taking the new quantum dot structures produced by our collaborator, Dan Gammon at NRL that contained one electron, and demonstrated optically induced and detected quantum spin coherence and coherent optical control of the spin state. Our high resolution measurements also provided a measurement of the spin relaxation rate. The funding level in this program was primarily to support one graduate student and purchase equipment. The remaining support for the work comes from ARO, NSA (formerly ARDA), AFOSR, NSF.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled QUANTUM INFORMATION PROCESSING WITH QUANTUM DOTS AND JOSEPHSON JUNCTIONS submitted by Yang Kaiyu for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2003 The requirements for large-scalable and fault-tolerant quantum information processing (QIP) are stringent. The hunt for a suitable physical arena and precise experimental techniques plays a crucial role in the physical realization of QIP. In this thesis, two well-known large-scalable solid-state-based systems, i.e. the quantum-dot and the Josephson-junction were studied. Two protocols were presented to construct a set of universal quantum gates, which are the basic elements of QIP. Both protocols were fault-tolerant at least partially due to the designed approach for quantum evolution and novel hardware structure.A large-scalable quantum computer model, with qubits represented by the sub- space subtended by the ground and the single exciton states on semiconductor quantum dots, was proposed. A mixed approach was adopted to realize a set of universal quantum gates, with a nonadiabatic geometric phase for single qubit gates and a dynamic phase for two-qubit gates. This scheme was expected to be partially fault-tolerant. Another scheme was also presented. To realize fault-tolerant quantum com- putation and successful quantum communication over a long range, Josephson- junctionsinthe chargeregimewerecombinedwithcavities. AneffectiveHamil- tonian describing arbitrary pair charge-qubits coupled through the cavity was proposed. It was found that nontrivial two-qubit gates might be achieved by this coupling mechanism. The capability to interconvert localized charge qubits and flying qubits in the proposed scheme implies that a quantum network could be constructed using this large-scalable, solid-state-based system.
