Book Dictionary of Scholastic Philosophy

Download or read book Dictionary of Scholastic Philosophy written by Bernard Wuellner and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scholastic philosopher is interested in definition for a different reason than the lexicographer and linguist. The philosopher is trying to learn things. Fe defines, after investigating reality, in an attempt to describe reality clearly and to sum up some aspect of his understanding of reality. Hence, we find our scholastic philosophers adopting as a main feature of their method this insistence on defining, on precise and detailed explanation of their definitions, and on proving that their definitions da correctly express what a nature or activity is. A dictionary of the language of scholastic philosophy fitted to the needs of beginners and of undergraduate students of the subject is not available in English. About the Author Bernard Wuellner S.J. was chairman of the University of Detroit philosophy department from 1938 to 1943, when he came to Loyola University to teach, write and edit various publications. He was on the Loyola faculty from 1943 until 1952, and from 1959 until 1962. He has also held philosophy teaching positions at Carroll University in Cleveland and Xavier University in Cincinnati. Father Wuellner wrote six books dealing with philosophy and theology. Wuellner died in 1997.

Book The Metaphysics of Quantities

Download or read book The Metaphysics of Quantities written by J. E. Wolff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are physical quantities, and in particular, what makes them quantitative? This book articulates and defends an original answer to this important, insufficiently understood question through the novel position of substantival structuralism. This position argues that quantitativeness is an irreducible feature of attributes, and quantitative attributes are best understood as substantival structured spaces. The book first explores what it means for an attribute to be quantitative, and what metaphysical implications a commitment to quantitative attributes has. It then sets the stage to address the metaphysical and ontological consequences of the existence of quantitative attributes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the philosophical and scientific achievements of Sir Kenelm Digby, a successful English diplomat, privateer and natural philosopher of the mid-1600s. Not widely remembered today, Digby is one of the most intriguing figures in the history of early modern philosophers. Among scholars, he is known for his attempt to reconcile what perhaps seem to be irreconcilable philosophical frameworks: Aristotelianism and early modern mechanism. This contributed volume offers the first full-length treatment of Digby’s work and of the unique position he occupied in early modern intellectual history. It explores key aspects of Digby’s metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophical method, and offers a new appraisal of his contributions to early modern natural philosophy and mathematics. A dozen contributors offer their expert insight into such topics as Body, quantity, and measures in Digby's natural philosophy Ecumenism and common notions in Digby Aristotelianism and accidents in Digby's philosophy Digby on body and soul Digby on method and experiments This book volume will be of benefit to a broad audience of scholars, educators, and students of the history of early modern science and philosophy.

Book Selected Writings on Self organization Philosophy Bioethics and Judaism

Download or read book Selected Writings on Self organization Philosophy Bioethics and Judaism written by Henri Atlan and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty years, biophysicist and philosopher Henri Atlan has been a major voice in contemporary European philosophical and bio-ethical debates. In a massive oeuvre that ranges from biology and neural network theory to Spinoza's thought and the history of philosophy, and from artificial intelligence and information theory to Jewish mysticism and to contemporary medical ethics, Atlan has come to offer an exceptionally powerful philosophical argumentation that is as hostile to scientism as it is attentive to biology's conceptual and experimental rigor, as careful with concepts of rationality as it is committed to rethinking the human place in a radically determined yet forever changing world. --Book Jacket.
