Book Acute Toxicities of Organic Chemicals to Fathead Minnows Pimephales Promelas

Download or read book Acute Toxicities of Organic Chemicals to Fathead Minnows Pimephales Promelas written by L. T. Brooke and published by University of Wisconsin. This book was released on 1984 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last decade, attention has focused upon predictive toxicology for screening chemicals regarding their potential hazard to the environment. Due to the value of using structure-activity relationships to estimate aquatic toxicity, strong needs have developed for consistent and accurate data bases. Volumes 1 through 5 of the ACUTE TOXICITIES OF ORGANIC CHEMICALS TO FATHEAD MINNOWS (PIMEPHALES PROMELAS) contain original data from 779 acute toxicity tests using 653 different chemicals and encompass 12 years of effort. All the toxicity tests were perfomed in water of uniform chemical characteristics and with a single test species. Additional information provided includes: test chemical name and commercial source; molecular formula and weight; chemical purity; method of chemical analysis and measured concentrations for each treatment; test temperature; dissolved oxygen, hardness, alkalinity and pH values for all treatments, plus the control; length, weight and loading factors for test organisms; 96-hr mortality (LC50) and effect (EC50) values; graphical depictions of the mortality and effect data in relationship to duration of exposure. Detailed behavioral observations of the test organisms during the exposures were recorded for most tests. Volume 5 contains cumulative indices to contents of volumes 1-5 which are arranged alphabetically and according to chemical formula.

Book Maternal Transfer of Dietary Methylmercury and Implications for Embryotoxicity in Fathead Minnows Pimephales Promelas

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, which is capable of global atmospheric transport. As a result, even the most pristine aquatic ecosystems are affected by atmospheric Hg deposition, following which microbial transformation yield organic Hg forms, the most concerning of which is methylmercury (MeHg). Methylmercury is capable of bioaccumulation and biomagnification in food webs, resulting in potentially toxic body burdens due to regular dietary exposure in long-lived organisms at higher trophic levels. It is also a molecular mimic of some endogenous amino acids, providing a route of transfer from mother to offspring via large amino acid transporters. Exposure during neurodevelopment can lead to serious, irreversible neurological dysfunction, associated with a variety of cognitive and motor abnormalities across species. The present studies evaluate the effects of maternally-transferred dietary MeHg, at environmentally relevant concentrations on early life stage fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). Embryos were collected from adult fatheads exposed to one of three diets with varying concentrations of MeHg for 30 days. Adult reproductive metrics were also monitored over the course of the study, with results indicating no effects on spawning frequency, clutch size, or total egg output. In embryos, Hg concentration was a function of female diet and the duration (number of days) of female exposure. Offspring spawned in tanks administered the low Hg diet displayed altered embryonic movement patterns (hyperactivity), decreased time to hatch, decreased mean larval size, and alterations to several metabolite abundances when compared with controls. Significantly altered metabolites include those associated with cellular energetics, fatty acid metabolism, and polyamine synthesis, indicating current environmental exposure scenarios are sufficient to disrupt important cellular pathways. Dysregulation of the dopaminergic system of embryos is also characterized, and may be a possible mechanism by which hyperactive behaviors are observed in these embryos. Offspring from tanks administered the high Hg diet exhibited delayed hatching, increased mortality, and physiological abnormalities. Brain tissue of exposed adults from the low diet were dissected into regions, and also evaluated for alterations in dopamine cycling. Collectively, these results indicate current exposure scenarios in North American lakes and rivers are sufficient to cause reductions in fitness and survival of early life stage fish. The potential for community structure impacts exists, as sensitive individuals and species become disproportionately affected by chronic, low-level MeHg exposure

Book Effects of Kelthane and Pydrin on Early Life Stages of Fathead Minnows Pimephales Promelas and Amphipods Hyalella Azteca

Download or read book Effects of Kelthane and Pydrin on Early Life Stages of Fathead Minnows Pimephales Promelas and Amphipods Hyalella Azteca written by JH. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embryonic, Larval, and early juvenile stages of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and juvenile amphipods (Hyalella azteca) were exposed to Kelthane, and fathead minnows were exposed to Pydrin in a small self-contained continuous-flow diluter system for approximately 30 days. Survival of the newly hatched larvae was found to be the most sensitive measure of the effect on fathead minnows of both pesticides. Pydrin was approximately 90 times more toxic to fathead minnows than Kelthane. The lowest effect concentrations of Kelthane and Pydrin were 13 times lower than the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) values for fathead minnows exposed in Lake Superior water. The upper and lower chronic limits for Kelthane were 39 and 19 μg/litre for fathead minnows and 33 and 19 μg/litre for amphipods. The chronic limits for Pydrin and fathead minnows were 0.43 and 0.33 μg/litre. The mean bioconcentration factors (BCFs) for Kelthane were 3 700 with fathead minnows and 10 000 with amphipods. The mean BCF for Pydrin with fathead minnows was 3 200. Residue concentrations and BCFs for both pesticides increased with increased water concentrations.

Book Microwave Effects on DNA and Proteins

Download or read book Microwave Effects on DNA and Proteins written by Chris D. Geddes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years, researchers have been reporting the effects of microwave radiation/heating on both the structure and function of DNA, RNA and proteins. For the most part, favourable accelerated biological functions are observed as microwave induced heating occurs, but other not-so favourable effects are also observed, such as denaturation, fragmentation and the so called and ill-explained, non-thermal microwave effects. This volume, the first of its kind, brings researchers together from around the world to discuss their current findings and thinking on the effects of Microwaves on Biological systems, particularly DNA, RNA and proteins, in the form of contributed edited chapters.
