Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many satellites have recently been launched or are in preparation, which operate in the microwave to IR ranges, the main objective being to observe the earth's atmosphere or interstellar clouds. Analysis of the data they supply requires extensive laboratory work because we still only have sufficiently accurate data (line positions, intensities, and profiles) for only a few species. Furthermore, the observer community is making increasing calls for laboratory data, as new development open up new observational possibilities (such as submillimeter observation). Research on these subjects involves many different areas of specialisation in fields of research that generate a wealth of data. In Spectroscopy from Space the people responsible for field observations explain which results they are expecting from their measurements and how laboratory people can help them to analyse their satellite data. Laboratory spectroscopists explain why what they can do now, and what kinds of experiment and theoretical development that might undertake to meet the needs of the remote sensing community. The problems of distributing reliable laboratory data in a timely way are also addressed.

Book excerpt: In the vast expanse of the cosmos, where stars twinkle in the night sky and galaxies swirl in the abyss, a remarkable dance of light and matter unfolds—a dance that has captivated the human imagination for centuries. This dance, illuminated by the science of spectroscopy, is what this book seeks to explore and explain. Spectroscopy, the study of the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation, may sound complex and esoteric, but at its heart lies a simple and profound idea: the colors of light can reveal the secrets of the universe. From the examination of distant stars to the analysis of molecules in a laboratory, spectroscopy is the key that unlocks the hidden stories encoded in light. This book is your guide to the fascinating world of spectroscopy, spanning from the fundamental principles that underpin this science to its myriad applications across various disciplines. We will journey together through the realms of chemistry and biology, where spectroscopy plays a vital role in unraveling the mysteries of molecules and cells. We will then venture into the realm of astronomy, where spectroscopy serves as a cosmic tool, allowing us to explore the composition, motion, and evolution of celestial objects. This book is designed for curious minds seeking to understand the inner workings of the universe. Whether you are a student just beginning your scientific journey, a seasoned researcher, or simply an inquisitive reader, this book aims to provide you with a comprehensive and accessible overview of spectroscopy and its applications.

Book Analytical Chemistry in Space

Download or read book Analytical Chemistry in Space written by Richard E. Wainerdi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Chemistry in Space presents an analysis of the chemical constitution of space, particularly the particles in the solar wind, of the planetary atmospheres, and the surfaces of the moon and planets. Topics range from space engineering considerations to solar system atmospheres and recovered extraterrestrial materials. Mass spectroscopy in space exploration is also discussed, along with lunar and planetary surface analysis using neutron inelastic scattering. This book is comprised of seven chapters and opens with a discussion on the possibilities for exploration of the solar system by mass spectroscopy, with particular reference to analysis of compositional data on solar system objects such as the Earth and meteorites, asteroids, comets, and interplanetary dust. The reader is then introduced to the project administration, instrument design, and spacecraft integration problems that must be solved to successfully fly a space experiment. The following chapters focus on the atmospheres of the sun and planets; the use of mass spectroscopy in solar system exploration and of neutron inelastic scattering in lunar and planetary surface analysis; and extraterrestrial in situ 14 MeV neutron activation analysis. The final chapter is devoted to the advantages and applications of thermal neutron activation to the analysis of certain samples of geological interest. This monograph will be a useful resource for analytical chemists and space scientists.

Book Modern Developments in Energy Combustion and Spectroscopy

Download or read book Modern Developments in Energy Combustion and Spectroscopy written by F.A. Williams and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium of technical articles is dedicated to Professor Stanford Solomon Penner on the occasion of his 70th birthday. As one of the most prominent scientists of our times, he has been particularly instrumental in advancing the field of combustion science while simultaneously he has developed quantitative spectroscopy into an important engineering discipline, and is also a leading international expert on energy issues. Written primarily by researchers who were Professor Penner's doctorate students during the last four decades, the articles consist of original contributions as well as previously published papers that provide important insights into combustion, spectroscopy, and energy problems. Among the topics included are turbulent combustion, flame structure, detonations, spectroscopic diagnostics, spectroscopy of atmospheric gases, and physical problems associated with nuclear reactors as well as electric power distribution, and energy conversion. The book includes a short biography of Professor Penner and a complete bibliography of his publications.
