Book Reactions of Phosphate with Some Ferruginous Brazilian Soils

Download or read book Reactions of Phosphate with Some Ferruginous Brazilian Soils written by Timothy David Evans and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface samples of fifteen contrasting soils sorbed between 60 and 490 ug P/g of added P (500 ug P/g added as KH2PO4). Although P sorption was well correlated qith exchangeable Al (r = 0.84), its removal caused only a relatively small decrease in the amount of P sorbed. Removal of amorphous Fe and Al components by oxalate treatment reduced P sorption by 19 to 100%, compared to that of the untreated sample. Citratedithionite-bicarbonate (CDB) treatment removed large amounts of Fe and associated Al but the reduction in P sorption after CDB (-12 to 84% compared to that of the untreated sample) was less than after oxalate treatment. Sorption of added P was always better correlated with the Al parameters than with the Fe parameters considered. It is difficult to identify by selective sequential dissolution techniques the soil parameters most responsible for P sorption because they are themselves correlated to a considerable degree. Sorption of added P following CDB was well correlated with the amount of amorphous aluminosllicates (defined by alkall dissolution) in the soils (r = 0.99) which were probably occluded within crystalline iron oxides and exposed by CDB treatment. Amorphous aluminosillicates in the soils sorbed substantial amounts of added P and also had native inorganic P associated with them which accounted for up to 44% of the total soil P. Several studies have show that a high proportion of the soils from tropical and sub-tropical regions, which fall within the great soil groups of Oxisol (Latossols).......

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Download or read book The Science of Clays written by Swapna Mukherjee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to provide a comprehensive and coherent description of three widely separated aspects of clays: the science of clays; the industrial uses of clays; and the role of clays in the environment. Most of the existing literature lacks such an integrated study and this work endeavours to fill that gap. An exhaustive account of the science of clays is presented in Part I of the book, which includes the classification, origin and evolution, composition and internal structure, chemical and physical properties of clays; soil mechanics; and analytical techniques for determining clay constituents. Part II provides a comprehensive description of the applications of clays and their derivatives in various industries, while Part III describes the role of clays in the environment; the pollution caused by clay minerals; and the application of clays in order to prevent environmental hazards. A principal feature of the book is its explanation of how the structure and composition of particular clay types facilitate their specific industrial or environmental applications, thus describing the interrelationship between three widely varying aspects of clay. A number of thought-provoking questions are raised at the end of the work in order to leave readers with a better insight in this regard.
