Book Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of Carburized Gear by Acoustic Emission Technique

Download or read book Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of Carburized Gear by Acoustic Emission Technique written by K. Aoki and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission measurements of carburized steel were carried out in room-temperature fatigue tests at the constant load-amplitude condition, in order to evaluate the crack growth behavior. An extremely large number of acoustic emission events were recorded near the maximum load in a flexural fatigue cycle. The increasing behavior of acoustic emission event counts was associated with the distribution of fractured intergranular facets in the fracture surface. Many emissions were also recorded in the spur gear tests. The crack growth rate of the gears can be estimated using the relation between the acoustic emission event counts and the intergranular fracture area on the crack surface. It can be concluded that the acoustic emission technique was powerful and quantitative method to evaluate the fatigue crack behavior of carburized mechanical parts.

Book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation

Download or read book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation written by Donald O. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 2093 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings, consisting of Parts A and B, contain the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation held at University of San Diego, San Diego, CA, on July 27 to August 1, 1997. The Review was organized by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University, in cooperation with the Ames Laboratory of the USDOE, the American Society of Nondestructive Testing, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Science Foundation IndustrylUniversity Cooperative Research Centers. This year's Review of Progress in QNDE was attended by approximately 370 participants from the US and many foreign countries who presented a total of approximately 350 papers. As usual, the meeting was divided into 36 sessions with four sessions running concurrently. The Review covered all phases of NDE research and development from fundamental investigations to engineering applications and inspection systems, and methods of inspection science from acoustics to x-rays. The Review continues to experience some fluctuations in size, mostly under pressure from a decrease in funding for NDE research at the US Federal level, but increased participation from foreign laboratories has more than made up the difference. The Review is ideally sized to permit a full-scale overview of the latest developments in a collegial atmosphere that most participants favor. The opening plenary session this year concentrated on advances in imaging technologies and methodologies that have been made in recent years. Dr. K.

Book In Situ Monitoring of Fiber Reinforced Composites

Download or read book In Situ Monitoring of Fiber Reinforced Composites written by Markus G.R. Sause and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “...a comprehensive and well written book, which...will be useful reading for both researchers entering the field and experienced specialists looking for new ideas....a valuable and long-lasting contribution to experimental mechanics.” – Stepan Lomov, KU Leuven This expert volume, an enhanced Habilitation thesis by the head of the Materials Testing Research Group at the University of Augsburg, provides detailed coverage of a range of inspection methods for insitu characterization of fiber-reinforced composites. The failure behavior of fiber reinforced composites is a complex evolution of microscopic damage phenomena. Beyond the use of classical testing methods, the ability to monitor the progression of damage insitu offers new ways to interpret the materials failure modes. Methods covered include digital image correlation, acoustic emission, electromagnetic emission, computed tomography, thermography, shearography, and promising method combinations. For each method, the discussion includes operational principles and practical applications for quality control as well as thoughtful assessment of the method's strengths and weakness so that the reader is equipped to decide which method or methods are most appropriate in a given situation. The book includes extensive appendices covering common experimental parameters influencing comparability of acoustic emission measurements; materials properties for modeling; and an overview of terms and abbreviations.

Book Detection of Fatigue Crack Growth by Acoustic Emission Techniques

Download or read book Detection of Fatigue Crack Growth by Acoustic Emission Techniques written by H. L. Dunegan and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT HAS BEEN WELL ESTABLISHED IN TENSILE TESTS THAT ACOUSTIC EMISSION IS AN IRREVERSIBLE PROCESS THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH PLASTIC DEFORMATION. IT IS ALSO WIDELY RECOGNIZED THAT PLASTIC DEFORMATION IS PRESENT AT THE ROOT OF A SHARP CRACK IN A STRUCTURE THAT IS STRESSED. ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTS PERFORMED ON CRACKED FRACTURE TOUGHNESS SPECIMENS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT ACOUSTIC MISSION ASSOCIATED WITH THE PLASTIC-ZONE AT THE CRACK TIP IS ALSO VERY NEARLY IRREVERSIBLE FOR STRESS INTENSITIES AT THE CRACK TIP OF LESS THAN ONE-HALF THE CRITICAL STRESS INTENSITY VALUE REQUIRED TO CAUSE UNSTABLE FRACTURE. IT IS SHOWN IN THIS REPORT HOW THIS IRREVERSIBLE FEATURE CAN BE UTILIZED IN A PRACTICAL NDT TEST ON A STRUCTURE UNDERGOING CRACK GROWTH DUE TO CYCLIC LOADING OR OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS. THIS TECHNIQUE IS BASED ON PERIODIC ACOUSTIC EMISSION MONITORING OF A STRUCTURE AS IT IS LOADED BACK TO ITS PROOF STRESS.

Book Acoustic Emission and Durability of Composite Materials

Download or read book Acoustic Emission and Durability of Composite Materials written by Nathalie Godin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, two kinds of analysis based on acoustic emission recorded during mechanical tests are investigated. In the first, individual, analysis, acoustic signature of each damage mechanism is characterized. So with a clustering method, AE signals that have similar shapes or similar features can be group together into a cluster. Afterwards, each cluster can be linked with a main damage. The second analysis is based on a global AE analysis, on the investigation of liberated energy, with a view to identify a critical point. So beyond this characteristic point, the criticality can be modeled with a power-law in order to evaluate time to failure.

Book Acoustic Emission beyond the Millennium

Download or read book Acoustic Emission beyond the Millennium written by T. Kishi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of the 15th International Acoustic Emission Symposium (IAES15) was set as 'practicality for life-extension and maintenance of plants and structures'. Special emphasis was placed on the review of acoustic emission (AE) research and applications in the 20th century and its future in the 21st century. The technique for monitoring defects and abnormal vibrations due to machine failures is vitally important for the safety of structures in a modern society. AE, as a passive, rather than an active NDT method, has drawn much attention because of its applicability to on-stream surveillance of structures. One important point is its capability to acquire data very simply but with high sensitivity so that the development of a non-contact sensing technique is particularly important. A quantitative method to evaluate structural integrity and remaining life from the detected AE signals is strongly required. Quantitative analysis, based on inverse procedures, has provided a certain solution, but has not been utilized widely enough in structures due to its complexity. Its applicability is limited partly because the accuracy of solutions depends on noise levels and partly because the phenomenon is usually non-reproducible. AE is expected to be a next-generation technique not only to monitor conditions but also for the repair of damaged structures, combined with an active-adaptive technique using a 'solid state actuator'. 'Smart Materials and Structures' are known in this respect. AE is considered to be a very promising technique, together with such sensing techniques as optical fiber, shape memory alloy and electro-rheological fluid. Thus, AE can play a very important roll in monitoring, evaluating and repairing structures. In this workshop, a limited number of invited papers are presented for technical discussion to review the achievements of AE research and applications in the 20th century. The proceedings are entitled Acoustic Emission - Beyond the Millennium to celebrate the new millennium, and stepping forward to a new era. The authors and topics of these review papers were selected by the editorial board.

Book Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures written by Antonino Morassi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non destructive testing aimed at monitoring, structural identification and di- nostics is of strategic importance in many branches of civil and mechanical - gineering. This type of tests is widely practiced and directly affects topical issues regarding the design of new buildings and the repair and monitoring of existing ones. The load bearing capacity of a structure can now be evaluated using well established mechanical modelling methods aided by computing facilities of great capability. However, to ensure reliable results, models must be calibrated with - curate information on the characteristics of materials and structural components. To this end, non destructive techniques are a useful tool from several points of view. Particularly, by measuring structural response, they provide guidance on the validation of structural descriptions or of the mathematical models of material behaviour. Diagnostic engineering is a crucial area for the application of non destructive testing methods. Repeated tests over time can indicate the emergence of p- sible damage occurring during the structure's lifetime and provide quantitative estimates of the level of residual safety.
