Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Download or read book Micromethods in Molecular Biology written by Volker Neuhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on practical experience and is therefore written as a prac tical manual. The fore-runners of the book were the manuals of the first and second EMBO-Courses on "Micromethods in Molecular Biology" which were held in G6ttingen in the spring of 1970 and the autumn of 1971. This book may serve as a manual not only for the participants of the third EMBO-Course to be held in G6ttingen in autumn 1973, but also for all experimenters who are interested in using micromethods. It must be emphasized from the outset that this book is conceived as a "cook book" and not as a monograph which attempts to revue the literature on micromethods critically. The methods described here in detail are performed routinely in the authors' laboratories and include all the practical details necessary for the successful appli cation of the micromethods. There are many other sensitive and excellent micro methods which are not included in this book, because the authors feel that in a "cook book" only methods for which they have personal experience and profi ciency should be described. Some readers may feel that the title promises more than the present contents of this book; however, if sufficient interest is shown in this volume, it may be possible to remedy such deficiencies in future editions.

Download or read book Autoradiography in Biology and Medicine written by George A. Boyd and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoradiography in Biology and Medicine focuses on the applications of autoradiography in medicine and biology, including photographic processes, emulsions, and response of films to isotopes and x-rays. The book first offers information on the meaning of autoradiography, including the etymology of autoradiography, photographic emulsion as a scientific instrument, and the relationship of biologists and autoradiography. The publication then examines the photographic process and comparative response of commercial and scientific emulsions. Discussions focus on fixation, washing, emulsion, response of films to electrons, x-rays, and gamma rays, and response of films to beta ray spectra of isotopes. The text takes a look at commercial photographic materials for autoradiography, autoradiographic image, and resolution. The manuscript then reviews the estimation of dose and exposure time, sources of error, and techniques. Topics include chemical variables, estimation of exposure time, errors occurring during the preparation of the autoradiogram for exposure, and contour autoradiography. The book is a valuable reference for readers interested in autoradiography.

Download or read book In Situ Hybridization in Brain written by George Uhl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion of interest in specific molecules important for brain function and dysfunction has drawn individuals from diverse backgrounds toward the use of in situ hybridization techniques. Study of the brain demands the anatomic precision and biochemical specificity that this approach can potentially bring. Workers with backgrounds in peptide neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, molecular biology, neurovirology, neuropathology, and neurophysiology have joined together in this volume to discuss their initial experiences in applying ill situ hybridization techniques to the study of the brain. The work, although still in an early phase of development, is worthy of initial summary and dissemination. In the area of neuropeptide gene expression alone, investigators represented here describe studies of vasopressin, opiate peptides, oxytocin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, cholecystokinin, and somatostatin. Other contributions provide insight into applications of the technique to studies of the expression of genes for neurotransmitter synthesizing enzymes, viral-encoded genes, trophic factor genes, and the genes selected on the basis of their special roles in the brain. The authors provide an important series of technical perspectives, and describe specific experimental protocols. This volume should be of interest to individuals seeking an introduction to these methods, as well to those desiring an up to date precis of work in this burgeoning area. Dr. Uhl, with the sponsorship of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has done a superb job of assembling the leaders in this area, and in organizing the presen ta tion of their perspecti ves herein.
