Book excerpt: This report concerns specific investigation undertaken to assess the role of the surface oxide layer in the generation of acoustic pulses in metals, i.e., acoustic emission. Experiments were conducted on single crystals of aluminum of different crystallographic orientation. The specimens were pulled in tension both in atmosphere and exposed to etchant solutions. Results demonstrated the oxide layer is not itself an emission source and that the emission characteristics are significantly modified as a result of the influence of the oxide on the deformation behavior of the specimens. Specific observations suggest the operative mechanism of emission generation and the importance of the role played by the surface condition in the deformation of metals.

Book Use of Acoustic Emission in Nondestructive Testing

Download or read book Use of Acoustic Emission in Nondestructive Testing written by Julian Ross Frederick and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model based on the activation of dislocation sources was developed for predicting the effect of microstructure on acoustic emission. The model predicts a minimum dislocation source length and slip distance below which no emission will be detected. Experimental results obtained on various metals and alloys having different microstructures substantiate the model. The effect of grain size on the acoustic emission from 99.99% aluminum and 99.9% copper suggests that macroscopic yielding in these metals occurs with the help of dislocation pile-ups that have been held up by grain boundaries and that the emission results from the activation of dislocation sources near the grain boundaries. Experimental results obtained under conditions of very low background noise level show that some metals produce acoustic emission when the applied load is removed. The amount of emission that is observed correlates with the magnitude of the Bauschinger effect in the metal. In those metals that show an 'unload' acoustic emission effect there is the possibility of using it to investigate the magnitude of the residual stress in a specimen. Creep and fatigue phenomena can also be studied by the use of acoustic emission. (Author Modified Abstract).

Book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace

Download or read book Structural Health Monitoring Damage Detection Systems for Aerospace written by Markus G. R. Sause and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents established methods of structural health monitoring (SHM) and discusses their technological merit in the current aerospace environment. While the aerospace industry aims for weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and to decrease maintenance time and operating costs, aircraft structures are often designed and built heavier than required in order to accommodate unpredictable failure. A way to overcome this approach is the use of SHM systems to detect the presence of defects. This book covers all major contemporary aerospace-relevant SHM methods, from the basics of each method to the various defect types that SHM is required to detect to discussion of signal processing developments alongside considerations of aerospace safety requirements. It will be of interest to professionals in industry and academic researchers alike, as well as engineering students. This article/publication is based upon work from COST Action CA18203 (ODIN - http://odin-cost.com/), supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). Book Acoustic Emission Testing

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing written by Christian U. Grosse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-12 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques have been studied in civil engineering for a long time. The techniques are recently going to be more and more applied to practical applications and to be standardized in the codes. This is because the increase of aging structures and disastrous damages due to recent earthquakes urgently demand for maintenance and retrofit of civil structures in service for example. It results in the need for the development of advanced and effective inspection techniques. Thus, AE techniques draw a great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. The book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes.

Book Solid mechanics research for quantitative non destructive evaluation

Download or read book Solid mechanics research for quantitative non destructive evaluation written by Jan D. Achenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Solid Mechanics Program at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), our primary mission is to establish a basic research program which addresses the funda mental issues in solid mechanics where a clear scientific understanding is lacking. Our approach involves first identifying the various scales at which material and structural response and failure occur. Within each level of behavior we address the basic mechanical phenomena for which a clear physical description is not available. ONR's program emphasizes experimental research to identify and quantify the interacting behavior and response mechanisms. Theoretical and computational approaches are developed to explain the details of the physical processes and to establish the technology necessary to control the thermomechanical behavior of materials and structures. Within the Department of Defense, it is a natural evolution that all new systems must generally operate in more demanding environments than the systems they replace. Thus, structural designers are pushed towards lighter weight, precision structures utilizing new materials. In such an environment, structural design mar gins simultaneously shrink and become more critical. Such trends make it essential that a well founded scientific base for the nondestructive detection and assessment of subcritical flaws in structural materials and structures exist. Within the ONR Solid Mechanics Program we are interested in both the identification of flaws and assessment of their degree of criticality.
