Book Quantifying the Importance of Image and Perception to Bus Rapid Transit

Download or read book Quantifying the Importance of Image and Perception to Bus Rapid Transit written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to quantify the importance of image and perception to Bus Rapid Transit, by identifying the different underlying tangible and intangible factors that drive any perceived differences between BRT and other forms of rapid transit. Tangible service attributes refer to those that are functional and objectively quantifiable, whereas attributes that are abstract, subjective, and more difficult to measure and quantify are termed intangible. Los Angeles was chosen as the study location because it features a wide range of rapid transit modes, including BRT-Lite (Metro Rapid), Full-Service BRT (Metro Orange Line), Light Rail Transit (Gold Line and Blue Line) and Heavy Rail Transit (Red Line). A series of focus groups were conducted in late 2007, followed in 2008 with an attitudinal survey of 2,400 transit users and non-users in the Los Angeles area. Survey data analysis showed that statistically significant differences existed in the overall ratings achieved by the alternative transit modes, which were separated into four different tiers (ordered in terms of lowest to highest overall rating): Tier 1: Local bus service; Tier 2: Metro Rapid and Blue Line LRT; Tier 3: Orange Line and the Gold Line; Tier 4: Red Line HRT. These overall ratings were compared against the level of investment associated with each mode, defined in terms of capital cost per mile. Given that the investment level associated with the Metro Rapid is much closer to that of the local bus than to any of the other modes, it was concluded that the Metro Rapid performs remarkably well in terms of overall rating achieved per dollar of investment, and therefore represents a very cost effective form of BRT. The Orange Line BRT also performed well in terms of overall rating achieved per dollar of investment, though not to the dramatic level associated with the Metro Rapid. It was found that intangible service attributes have a significant influence on modal perceptions - the Gold Line LRT and Orange Line BRT both achieved higher overall ratings than the Blue Line LRT due to higher ratings on key intangible attributes like safety while riding, safety while at the station, and other riders that use the service. It was hypothesized that these differences in intangible attribute ratings were related to the issue of urban context, and it appears that the urban area through which a rapid transit service runs has a larger impact on overall perceptions than whether it is based on bus or rail technology. Overall, these findings showed that BRT (even in its lower investment forms) can compete with rail-based transit (at least in the perception of the general public) in return for lower capital cost investments. The question of whether these perceptions translate into similar levels of ridership attraction is a topic for further research.

Book Quantifying the Importance of Image and Perception to Bus Rapid Transit

Download or read book Quantifying the Importance of Image and Perception to Bus Rapid Transit written by Alasdair Cain and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bus-based pubic transit in the U.S. suffers from an image problem. If bus transit is to be perceived as more than just a social service, it must be able to perform at a level comparable to the private automobile, and convey the high quality image typically associated with rail. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) aims to do just that: emulate rail, but at a lower capital cost. Though many have an opinion on whether or not BRT can achieve this, little quantitative evidence exists. This study assessed the extent to which BRT can capture the image of rail-based transit and aimed to understand and quantify the underlying tangible and intangible factors that drive any perceptual differences that may exist between the two modes. Download or read book Public Transport written by Peter R. White and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Transport provides an accessible introductory text to the field of public transport systems, covering bus, coach, rail, metro, domestic air and taxi modes. The market structure is set out, together with data collection methods. The technology of bus and rail systems is introduced with particular reference to peak capacity and energy consumption. An analysis of cost structures and costing methods leads into a review of pricing concepts and their application. In addition to issues related to urban systems, specific chapters cover rural public transport and the long-distance sector. A concluding chapter examines long-run policy issues, such as likely population changes and scope for substitution of travel. The primary context taken is that of the British Isles, drawing extensively on data such as the National Travel Survey in England. However, the principles and findings are also broadly applicable to countries of similar per capita income and population density. This sixth edition introduces a new chapter on data collection and survey methods for public transport systems in addition to a general update of the text to reflect the latest statistical evidence, research findings and policy changes. Public Transport is an essential textbook for both students in transport and those in related fields. This is an invaluable resource for transport planners in local authorities and consultancies.

Book Emerging Paradigms in Urban Mobility

Download or read book Emerging Paradigms in Urban Mobility written by Om Prakash Agarwal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging Paradigms in Urban Mobility: Planning, Finance and Implementation explains the types of new urban mobility planning paradigms that are emerging throughout the world, along with their potential to transform the transportation landscape. As half of the world's 7 billion people now live in cities, thus causing severe road congestion, increased air pollution, energy insecurity and sustainability problems in cities and the planet itself, this book presents new paradigms that are emerging to address these problems, along with other topics of note, including economic efficiency, health, the well-being of cities and their residents, urban mobility transformations, and the role of social media. In addition, the book looks at Integrated Corridor Management and how it improves the people-moving performance of multi-modal transport systems in high demand urban corridors and how countries balance the mobility benefits of motorcycles with the environmental and safety threats they pose. - Provides previously unpublished research on new approaches to integrating governance, the changing role of IT, and shared mobility initiatives - Links transportation and land use, climate change, and poverty reduction and gender, going well beyond the technical issues of transport planning - Highlights successful factors that have worked and how they can be tailored to different contexts - Includes learning aids, such as case studies, text boxes and chapter openers and summaries

Book The Image of the City

Download or read book The Image of the City written by Kevin Lynch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1964-06-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.
