Book excerpt: The study of quantum systems which are chaotic in the classical limit (quantum chaos or quantum chaology) is a very new field of research. Not long ago, it was still considered as an esoteric subject, however this attitude changed radically when it was realized that this subject is relevant to many of the more mature branches of physics. This book presents the accumulated knowledge available up until now and at the same time introduces topics which are being intensively studied at present. Their relevance to other fields such as condensed matter, atomic and nuclear physics is also discussed. The lectures have been divided into two rough categories - background and advanced lectures.

Book Quantum Chaos Y2k Proceedings Of Nobel Symposium 116

Download or read book Quantum Chaos Y2k Proceedings Of Nobel Symposium 116 written by Sven Aberg and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-10-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum chaos is becoming a very wide field that ranges from experiments to theoretical physics and purely mathematical issues. In view of this grand span, Nobel Symposium 116 focused on experiments and theory, and attempted to encourage interplay between them. There was emphasis on the interdisciplinary character of the subject, involving a broad range of subjects in physics, including condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics and elementary particle physics. The physics involved in quantum chaos has much in common with acoustics, microwaves, optics, etc., and therefore the symposium also covered aspects of wave chaos in this broader sense. The program was structured according to the following areas: manifestations of classical chaos in quantum systems; transport phenomena; quantal spectra in terms of periodic orbits; semiclassical and random matrix approaches; quantum chaos in interacting systems; chaos and tunneling; wave-dynamic chaos. This important book constitutes the proceedings of the symposium.

Book Integrative Systems Approaches to Natural and Social Dynamics

Download or read book Integrative Systems Approaches to Natural and Social Dynamics written by M. Matthies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-08-28 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the new millennium, mankind is challenged by a paradox: the more we know about the world the more uncertain we become in understanding and predicting how it works. This book presents an outline of a new basis for Systems Science, and a methodology for its application in complex environmental, economic, social, and technological systems.

Book Wet Granular Matter A Truly Complex Fluid

Download or read book Wet Granular Matter A Truly Complex Fluid written by Stephan Herminghaus and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a monograph written for the young and advanced researcher who is entering the field of wet granular matter and keen to understand the basic physical principles governing this state of soft matter. It treats wet granulates as an instance of a ternary system, consisting of the grains, a primary, and a secondary fluid. After addressing wetting phenomena in general and outlining the basic facts on dry granular systems, a chapter on basic mechanisms and their effects is dedicated to every region of the ternary phase diagram. Effects of grain shape and roughness are considered as well. Rather than addressing engineering aspects such as existing books on this topic do, the book aims to provide a generalized framework suitable for those who want to understand these systems on a more fundamental basis.

Book Coherent Evolution in Noisy Environments

Download or read book Coherent Evolution in Noisy Environments written by Andreas Buchleitner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades extraordinary progress in the experimental handling of single quantum objects has spurred theoretical research into investigating the coupling between quantum systems and their environment. Decoherence, the gradual deterioration of entanglement due to dissipation and noise fed to the system by the environment, has emerged as a central concept. The present set of lectures is intended as a high-level, but self-contained, introduction into the fields of quantum noise and dissipation. In particular their influence on decoherence and applications pertaining to quantum information and quantum communication are studied, leading the nonspecialist researchers and the advanced students gradually to the forefront of research.

  • Author : M. J. Adams
  • Publisher : World Scientific Publishing Company
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9781860940866
  • Pages : 485 pages

Download or read book Dynamics of Complex Fluids written by M. J. Adams and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1998 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this important volume present an up-to-date, wide-ranging view on developments in the analysis of complex fluid behaviour. Emphasis is placed upon the relation between small scale structure and large scale response: this brings together the approaches of the molecular physicist and the continuum mechanicist. Experiments, constitutive models and computer simulations are combined to yield new insights into the flow behaviour of polymer melts and solutions, colloidal and neutral particle suspensions, and pastes and soils.
