Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Close Your Eyes... Dr. David Fazio is a maternity physician at Chicago-Western Medical Hospital. He is a handsome, divorced baby doctor who has more than his share of personal flaws. But Dr. Fazio has one good moral quality going for him: He is a pro-life obstetrician. In a state where late term abortions are now legal, he is currently being pressured by the hospital to perform abortions to any patient requesting one. Dr. Fazio has one other problem...he has horrific sleep issues and has been known to be a sleepwalker. He wakes up one morning with severe burns on his hands, while a family planning clinic one block away has burned down to the ground with casualties. The authorities are now suspicious, as the 'Abortion Arsonist' is burning down clinics in Chicagoland, and Dr. Fazio has no clue who it is. Every time Dr. Fazio sleeps, he has no concept of where he'll wake up or any memory of what damage he may have done the night before...

Book excerpt: Chicago Attorney Robert Mazzara has just been informed of the suicide death of his childhood friend, Marco Pezza. The two of them grew up together in a small suburb in Chicago during the turbulent sixties and seventies, when the issues of household violence were seldom ever addressed. Along with their best friends, Petey Rodriguez, Billy Kozar and Johnny Orozco, they all experienced the coming-of-age events that all young boys go through during grade school and high school, with one exception: They were all survivors of severe physical and sexual child abuse. As they all grow up into young adults, the demons of their past, along with their abusive fathers, play a significant part on each and every one of their young lives. They all grow up coping with their horrific childhoods, their violent fathers, and the long-term impact it has taken throughout their adulthood. Mazzara reflects on all of the tragic encounters and events that occurred during the last fifty years, culminating with his best friend's suicide. He realizes that he is now...the only one left. Once upon a time, a long time ago, Robby and Marco, along with Petey, Billy and Johnny...were once called 'The Buzz Boys'.

Book They Only Wear Black Hats

Download or read book They Only Wear Black Hats written by Edward Izzi and published by Cassino Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detective Mike Palazzola of Detroit’s Third Precinct is good at catching the bad guys, especially those who commit brutal, heinous crimes. But after several mishandled criminal cases, he becomes increasingly frustrated with the judicial system and its prosecutors. The alleged murderers he worked so hard to capture and indict are either dismissed on a legal technicality, exonerated, or given lenient sentences by the court system. While having dinner with a friend at Detroit’s Roma Café, he stumbles upon a secret gathering of members who have been passing out their own brand of justice since 1927…members who always wear black bowler hats. The Malizia Society of Detroit or “The Archangels” as they like to call themselves, have their own stable of executioners. They meet, decide, and pass out their own private brand of justice against those malicious criminals whom the judicial system can no longer indict. He later learns that one of the county prosecutors, Kevin Scanlon, is a member of this secret society. As Detective Palazzola and his reporter friend, Justine Cahill begin to investigate these ‘Black Bowler Hat’ murders, the FBI steps in. They now have a society member who has become a government informant, and the Feds are confident that they can get an indictment against this secret society. They ask the cops and the media to back off, not wanting anyone to jeopardize their investigation. But the Archangels are now out of control, and are eliminating any disgruntled society members, lawyers, and even reporters who threaten to make public and expose their secret manifesto of ‘mortal redemption’. Victims are now showing up dead, by strangulation or by self-inflicted ‘suicide’. Palazzola knows exactly who these killers are, but there isn’t anything he can do. And with every Archangels murder, at every crime scene…there lays a black, bowler hat.

  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book El Camino Drive written by Edward Izzi and published by Cassino Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detective John Valentino from Detroit’s Third Precinct knows El Camino Drive very well…his father was murdered there over forty years ago. On Halloween 1978, Antonio Valentino was gunned down after work by three men, alleging that he was having an affair with one of their wives. He was shot in cold blood, and his killers were later exonerated, claiming self-defense. They believed that a toy pistol in the victim’s pocket was an actual weapon. In a very public declaration after the murder trial, his uncle Rossano Valentino announces a vendetta against his brother’s killers. Over forty years later, Detective Valentino is now an alcoholic. He has lost his wife and family to his drinking and has just buried his mother. When he and his sisters clean out the attic of her home, they find an old, locked wooden trunk, containing an evidence bag and contents from the night of the murder in 1978. And in a clear plastic bag, is a blood-stained, green water pistol he once owned as a little boy…the very toy his father used to fool his killers. Frustrated with his life problems and blaming them on his father’s death, Valentino decides to avenge the murder of his father and follow through with Rossano’s family vendetta. One hot, July evening, the wife of the man who planned the murder over forty years ago, is found brutally stabbed to death in her ex-husband’s mobile home. Next to her body, is a poem from the killer, and a green, toy water pistol. The Detroit detective has no idea who did it, as his uncle is now too old and sickly to commit murder. One by one, the murderers who killed his father are brutally slain, while Valentino has no clue who the “Water Pistol Killer” is. He doesn’t have any idea who is fulfilling this old vendetta. Now John Valentino is considered the prime suspect. And after every murder, next to each body, is a new stanza to the same poem…and a green, toy water gun.

Book excerpt: Embrace your enemies. When their bodies are found, you won't be a suspect... How would you like to hire the services of an elite group of professional assassins, who will accept the assignment of deleting your most horrific adversary, performing the perfect murder, without a trace? Chicago Sun-Times Reporter Paul Crawford is asked to investigate a series of recent murders he eventually calls the 'Houdini Victims'. He begins with the investigation of a corporate executive who vanishes from a parking garage in the Chicago Loop, without a trace. The most unusual fact about this crime is that there is no body, no DNA evidence, no surveillance cameras, and no fingerprints. It is quite obvious that this murder was done by a professional, and neither Crawford nor his Channel Eight reporter buddy, Chaz Rizzo, can figure out who it is. Mark Stelter, CEO of Eradication, Inc., has found a niche and a marketable demand for those who wish to eliminate their worst enemies. For the price of $99,900, he has a stable of professional killers who can abduct any victim and make them disappear. With the help of his affiliate company, Eco-Green Environmental Consultants, he has the chemicals, the facilities, and the personnel to make any murder victim vanish without a trace. He conducts his covert corporation like any other corporate entity, with a board of directors meeting each month and dividend declarations to his shareholders. But when one of the directors attempts to resign, things start to get complicated. Stelter sends his killers to track down and assassinate the former shareholder. They use a unique apparatus called a 'bolito', instantaneously killing their victims. With a section in the director's contracts barring them from resigning and signing their own death warrants, the shareholders of Eradication Inc. are now getting nervous. Although they are making millions, the shareholders now realize that they are putting their lives at risk, and can only escape with their deaths. As the victims continue to vanish, Paul Crawford continues to investigate the environmental company and how they are connected to the recent Chicago murders. With the shareholders of Eradication Inc. wishing to resign and make a deal with the Chicago P.D., Mark Stelter struggles to keep his Board of Directors unified with an iron fist. It is now only a question of time, before either the reporters or the shareholders become the next vanishing victims of Eradication, Inc.

Book Cohesion Coherence and Temporal Reference from an Experimental Corpus Pragmatics Perspective

Download or read book Cohesion Coherence and Temporal Reference from an Experimental Corpus Pragmatics Perspective written by Cristina Grisot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides new methodological and theoretical insights into temporal reference and its linguistic expression, from a cross-linguistic experimental corpus pragmatics approach. Verbal tenses, in general, and more specifically the categories of tense, grammatical and lexical aspect are treated as cohesion ties contributing to the temporal coherence of a discourse, as well as to the cognitive temporal coherence of the mental representations built in the language comprehension process. As such, it investigates the phenomenon of temporal reference at the interface between corpus linguistics, theoretical linguistics and pragmatics, experimental pragmatics, psycholinguistics, natural language processing and machine translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the presence of utopian and dystopian elements in the Italian literary landscape. It focuses on four authors that are representatives of the various positions in the Italian cultural debate: Pasolini, Calvino, Sanguineti, and Volponi. What did concepts like utopia and dystopia mean for these authors? Is it possible to separate utopia from dystopia? What is the role of science fiction in this debate? This book answers these questions, proposing an original interpretation of utopia and of the social role of literature. The book also takes into consideration four of the most influential literary journals in Italy: Officina, il menabò, il verri, and Nuovi Argomenti, that played a central role in the cultural and political debate on utopia in Italy.

Book The Honest Courtesan

  • Author : Margaret F. Rosenthal

Download or read book The Honest Courtesan written by Margaret F. Rosenthal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Venetian courtesan has long captured the imagination as a female symbol of sexual license, elegance, beauty, and unruliness. What then to make of the cortigiana onesta—the honest courtesan who recast virtue as intellectual integrity and offered wit and refinement in return for patronage and a place in public life? Veronica Franco (1546-1591) was such a woman, a writer and citizen of Venice, whose published poems and familiar letters offer rich testimony to the complexity of the honest courtesan's position. Margaret F. Rosenthal draws a compelling portrait of Veronica Franco in her cultural social, and economic world. Rosenthal reveals in Franco's writing a passionate support of defenseless women, strong convictions about inequality, and, in the eroticized language of her epistolary verses, the seductive political nature of all poetic contests. It is Veronica Franco's insight into the power conflicts between men and women—and her awareness of the threat she posed to her male contemporaries—that makes her literary works and her dealings with Venetian intellectuals so pertinent today. Combining the resources of biography, history, literary theory, and cultural criticism, this sophisticated interdisciplinary work presents an eloquent and often moving account of one woman's life as an act of self-creation and as a complex response to social forces and cultural conditions. "A book . . . pleasurably redolent of Venice in the 16th-century. Rosenthal gives a vivid sense of a world of salons and coteries, of intricate networks of family and patronage, and of literary exchanges both intellectual and erotic."—Helen Hackett, Times Higher Education Supplement The Honest Courtesan is the basis for the film Dangerous Beauty (1998) directed by Marshall Herskovitz. (The film was re-titled The Honest Courtesan for release in the UK and Europe in 1999.)
