Book Loved Beyond Compare

Download or read book Loved Beyond Compare written by Dr. Jane Amana Ekong and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-09-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was on a smoldering hot day that the young teen, Jane, was walking briskly from her house toward the street, a break from her usual habit of hiding indoors to avoid a chance encounter with soldiers who could capture her. Suddenly she sensed a shadow overhead, which was accompanied by the dreaded whistling sound of bombs pushing downward through the air. She knew immediately that she was in extreme danger. She quickly looked up to determine the bombs’ direction so she could deduce the best avoidance strategy. Unfortunately, it seemed already too late as the scotching heat above her head indicated the bombs close proximity. Before she could act, everything went dark and there was deadly silence. Later, as she pushed debris out of her mouth, after realizing she was miraculously still alive, Jane had no idea that this astonishing outcome would be just one of many in her future. In a riveting retelling of her experiences as a young girl living through the Nigerian Civil War, Dr. Jane recounts amazing incidences of near-death occurrences with escapes that defy explanation. While inviting others into her journey through the chaos, she encourages us to explore with her whether wartime chaos, and the abundance of impossible odds, could be breeding grounds for divine interventions, miracles, and the inpetus to evaluate events in our lives differently. Loved Beyond Compare is the gripping memoir of a Nigerian girl’s experiences as she and her family struggled to survive the vicious civil war that raged around them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wonder of poetry can be found in its simplicity. Each phrase is easy for the reader to comprehend. Words are properly selected and then composed in a rhythmic manner to convey a special meaning. In God's Glorious Design, the emphasis is placed on God's miracle of creation. Scenes from nature are depicted to secure the attention of the reader, and then the author closes with a verse that brings everything into perspective. We are reminded that God is in control of every aspect of our lives. The world has changed in so many ways since the day Christ died on the cross for our sins, but the truth found in the resurrection story will never change. For those who believe and accept Christ as their Savior, there is the promise of everlasting life and peace. For those who continue to search for the truth, there is still hope. If you are lost, as I was thirty years ago, surrender your life to God, just as you are; He is waiting for you, with open arms, to bring you into His fold.

Download or read book The New Rhetoric written by Chaïm Perelman and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 1991-09-30 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Rhetoric is founded on the idea that since “argumentation aims at securing the adherence of those to whom it is addressed, it is, in its entirety, relative to the audience to be influenced,” says Chaïm Perelman and L. Olbrechts-Tyteca, and they rely, in particular, for their theory of argumentation on the twin concepts of universal and particular audiences: while every argument is directed to a specific individual or group, the orator decides what information and what approaches will achieve the greatest adherence according to an ideal audience. This ideal, Perelman explains, can be embodied, for example, "in God, in all reasonable and competent men, in the man deliberating or in an elite.” Like particular audiences, then, the universal audience is never fixed or absolute but depends on the orator, the content and goals of the argument, and the particular audience to whom the argument is addressed. These considerations determine what information constitutes "facts" and "reasonableness" and thus help to determine the universal audience that, in turn, shapes the orator's approach. The adherence of an audience is also determined by the orator's use of values, a further key concept of the New Rhetoric. Perelman's treatment of value and his view of epideictic rhetoric sets his approach apart from that of the ancients and of Aristotle in particular. Aristotle's division of rhetoric into three genres–forensic, deliberative, and epideictic–is largely motivated by the judgments required for each: forensic or legal arguments require verdicts on past action, deliberative or political rhetoric seeks judgment on future action, and epideictic or ceremonial rhetoric concerns values associated with praise or blame and seeks no specific decisions. For Aristotle, the epideictic genre was of limited importance in the civic realm since it did not concern facts or policies. Perelman, in contrast, believes not only that epideictic rhetoric warrants more attention, but that the values normally limited to that genre are in fact central to all argumentation. "Epideictic oratory," Perelman argues, "has significant and important argumentation for strengthening the disposition toward action by increasing adherence to the values it lauds.” These values are central to the persuasiveness of arguments in all rhetorical genres since the orator always attempts to "establish a sense of communion centered around particular values recognized by the audience.”

Download or read book Living Worth written by Stefan Ecks and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Living Worth Stefan Ecks draws on ethnographic research on depression and antidepressant usage in India to develop a new theory of value. Framing depressive disorder as a problem of value, Ecks traces the myriad ways antidepressants come to have value, from their ability to help make one’s life worth living to the wealth they generate in the multibillion-dollar global pharmaceutical market. Through case studies that include analyses of the different valuation of generic and brand-name drugs, the origins of rising worldwide depression rates, and the marketing, prescription, and circulation of antidepressants, Ecks theorizes value as a process of biocommensuration. Biocommensurations—transactions that aim or claim to make life better—are those forms of social, medical, and corporate actions that allow value to be measured, exchanged, substituted, and redistributed. Ecks’s theory expands value beyond both a Marxist labor theory of value and a free market subjective theory, thereby offering new insights into how the value of lives and things become entangled under neoliberal capitalism.
