Book Quadrupole Magnet for the APS Advanced Photon Source Storage Ring

Download or read book Quadrupole Magnet for the APS Advanced Photon Source Storage Ring written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An asymmetric core geometry has been selected for the quadrupole magnets in the storage ring of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) in order to accommodate the vacuum chamber and photon beam pipes. The requirements of the position beam make it necessary that the magnet be able to produce a field gradient of 20-T/m with high accuracy. The design for this magnet has been fully developed in preparation for the construction of a prototype. Some unique features included in the design are described. Design choices are being validated by extensive magnetic-field calculations in both two and three dimensions. The results of these calculations are presented. 6 refs., 4 figs., 5 tabs.

Book Magnetic Measurements of the Storage Ring Quadrupole Magnets for the 7 GeV Advanced Photon Source

Download or read book Magnetic Measurements of the Storage Ring Quadrupole Magnets for the 7 GeV Advanced Photon Source written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pre-production quadrupole magnet for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring has been used. The multipole coefficients meet the tolerance requirements. The field-gradient integrals are measured relative to a reference quadrupole. By using two laser beam units, the magnetic and geometrical axes of the magnet are aligned within 0.2 mrad. The dependencies of the sextupole coefficient and the magnetic center on the excitation current are corrected by shunting the magnetic potentials of the top and bottom yokes.

Book Magnetic Measurement Data of the 0 8 m Prototype Quadrupole Magnets for the APS Storage Ring

Download or read book Magnetic Measurement Data of the 0 8 m Prototype Quadrupole Magnets for the APS Storage Ring written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From magnetic measurement data of the two 0.8-m prototype quadrupole magnets (P-SRQ-1 and P-SRQ-2) and the study of the geometries for the pole-end bevels and pole chamfers, the following conclusions have been made. Mechanical stability of the magnet poles has been achieved by modification of the weld procedures between two quadrants of the magnets. Stability of the magnet-pole positions was measured optically and was also concluded from the fact that the allowed coefficients, mainly sextupole and octupole terms, were independent of the magnet excitation currents. Unallowed multipole field coefficients for the second magnet, without correction of the magnet-pole positions, are smaller than for the first magnet. The field gradient integrals of the two magnets at 400A differ by less than 5 x 10−4 for r = 2.5 cm. This indicates that an acceptable magnet assembly procedure has been established. The 2-D calculations and ''body'' measurements for allowed coefficients after the main field, b5 and b9, agree within 1.2 x 10−4 at r = 2.5 cm. This implies that the 2-D design geometry is basically correct and acceptable. As expected for a magnet with long and narrow poles, saturation effects of pole shims have been observed. In order to reduce fabrication cost for the end-plates, the geometries for the pole-end bevels and pole chamfers have been studied. By choosing a bevel angle of 61°, instead of 45°, it is possible to have acceptable allowed coefficients with dimensions of pole-chamfers up to 16.5 mm. This allows the design of the end-plate as one piece without removable pole-tip.

The data statistics include the integrated main fields, multipole coefficients, magnetic and mechanical axes, and roll angles of the main fields. The average and rms values of the measured magnet data meet the storage ring requirements.

Book Status of Magnet Power Supply Development for the APS Advanced Photon Source Storage Ring

Download or read book Status of Magnet Power Supply Development for the APS Advanced Photon Source Storage Ring written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To simplify installation and speed testing of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring magnets, vacuum chambers and magnet power supplies, a modular approach was developed. All but the dipole magnets are independently controlled. Pulse width modulated dc-to-dc converters are used to power the individual magnets, with 12-pulse power supplies providing the raw dc to the converters. A magnet support base is the heart of a module and may hold as many as 7 magnets with 8 individually powered coils. The dc-to-dc converters are part of each magnet base module. This paper will show the modular approach which is used for the storage ring magnet systems and will give the test results of the prototype topology for the dc-to-dc converters that are being built and tested to power 680 quadrupole and sextupole magnets. 4 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

Book 3 D Computations and Measurements of Accelerator Magnets for the APS

Download or read book 3 D Computations and Measurements of Accelerator Magnets for the APS written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Photon Source (APS), now under construction at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), requires dipole, quadrupole, sextupole, and corrector magnets for each of its circular accelerator systems. Three-dimensional (3-D) field computations are needed to eliminate unwanted multipole fields from the ends of long quadrupole and dipole magnets and to guarantee that the flux levels in the poles of short magnets will not cause saturation. Measurements of the magnets show good agreement with the computations.

Book Vibration Study of the APS Magnet Support Assemblies

Book excerpt: Stability of the positron closed orbit is a requirement for successful operation of the Advanced Photon Source. The fact that vibration of the storage ring quadrupole magnets can lead to distortion of the positron closed orbit and to potentially unacceptable beam emittance growth provides the motivation for the subject studies. Low frequency vibrations can be controlled with steering magnets using feedback systems, provided the vibration amplitudes are within the dynamic range of the controllers. High frequency vibration amplitudes, on the other hand, are out of the range of the controller and, therefore must be limited to ensure the emittance growth will not exceed a prescribed value. Vibration criteria were developed based on the requirement that emittance growth be limited to 10 percent. Recognizing that the quadrupole magnets have the most significant effect, three different scenarios were considered: vibration of a single quadrupole within the storage ring, random vibration of all the quadrupoles in the ring, and the hypothetical case of a plane wave sweeping across the site and the quadrupoles following the motion of the plane wave. The maximum allowable peak vibration amplitudes corresponding to these three vibration scenarios are given. The criteria associated with the passage of a plane wave is dependent on wavelength, or, alternatively, on frequency given the wave speed. The wave speed used is that measured as a part of the geotechnical investigation at the APS site.

Book Design and Measurement of the Sextupole Magnet for the APS Storage Rings

Download or read book Design and Measurement of the Sextupole Magnet for the APS Storage Rings written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prototype sextuple magnet has been designed, constructed, and measured for the storage ring of the Advanced Photon Source. The design approaches very closely to 120° rotation symmetry, in order to minimize all forbidden multipole components. The core is made of three identical stacks of laminations, each lamination consisting of two poles and the return yoke joining them. The antechamber of the thick aluminum vacuum chamber fits between two neighboring stacks. Computations and measurements of the sextupole strength B′′ and multipole field components, both in the central region and integrated in the beam direction, show that the magnets meets the requirements for positron beam dynamics.
