Download or read book Fra Angelico written by Paolo Morachiello and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To visit the Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence is a uniquely moving and satisfying experience. Here, around 1440, in the tiny whitewashed cells of the friars, in the corridors, cloister and chapter house, Fra Angelico and his assistants - who included the young Benozzo Gozzoli - painted a series of images centred upon the theme of Christ's sacrifice. Conceived and executed as aids to meditation and prayer, they have taken their place among the most exhilarating masterpieces of Western art. Their deep spirituality springs from the Christian theology that was the basis of Fra Angelico's life, but in their humanity and in elements of their style, Fra Angelico comes close to the circle of Masaccio and Ghiberti, at the dawn of the Renaissance. 'The sources of his feeling', wrote the great art historian Bernard Berenson, 'are in the Middle Ages, but he enjoys his feelings in a way which is almost modern.'. This magnificent book is an unprecedented record of the frescoes as they appear today, after a long and successful campaign of restoration that is described by Giorgio Bonsanti. An introduction to the building, and to the painter, is followed by a fully illustrated survey of every picture, with details shown in actual size. Enabling us to come closer than ever before to his work, Fra Angelico: The San Marco Frescoes reveals the artist's tenderness and strength, his freshness of colour and his extraordinary luminosity and subtlety of modelling, and is a superb visual record of this great artistic and spiritual ensemble.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing Art on Both Sides of the Atlantic, 1860-1940 aims to bring the marketplace dynamic into sharper focus with its essays which examine the many functionaries who participate in the art market network, among them, agents, scouts, intermediaries, restorers, fakers, decorators, advisers and experts. All of the essays are rooted in case studies which give voice to the various aspects of supply−from branding to marketing, from inventory to display, from restoration to pastiche to fabrication. Each is incredibly rich in their marshalling of primary sources and archival materials; in sum, they present an impressive array of new research. Contributors are: Fae Brauer, Denise M. Budd, Patrizia Cappellini, Lynn Catterson, Sebastien Chaffour, Laura D. Corey, Flaminia Gennari-Santori, Jacqueline Marie Musacchio, Joanna Smalcerz, Alexandra Provo, AnnaLea Tunesi, and Leanne Zalewski.
Download or read book Sculpture and the Museum written by Christopher R. Marshall and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Henry Moore Institute is a world-recognised centre for the study of sculpture in the heart of Leeds. An award-winning exhibitions venue, research centre, library and sculpture archive, the Institute hosts a year-round programme of exhibitions, conferences, lectures, research, and publications that aim to expand the under-standing and scholarship of historical and contemporary sculpture. It is a part of The Henry Moore Foundation, which was set up by Moore in 1977 to encourage appreciation of the visual arts, especially sculpture. Sculpture and the Museum is the first in-depth examination of the varying roles and meanings assigned to sculpture in museums and galleries during the modern period, from neo-classical to contemporary art practice. It considers a rich array of curatorial strategies and settings in order to examine the many reasons why sculpture has enjoyed a position of such considerable importance--and complexity--within the institutional framework of the museum and how changes to the museum have altered, in turn, the ways that we perceive the sculpture within it. In particular, the contributors consider the complex issue of how best to display sculpture across different periods and according to varying curatorial philosophies. Sculptors discussed include Canova, Rodin, Henry Moore, Flaxman and contemporary artists such as Rebecca Horn, Rachel Whiteread, Mark Dion and Olafur Eliasson, with a variety of museums in America, Canada, the UK and Europe presented as case studies. Underlying all of these discussions is a concern to chart the critical Importance of the acquisition, placement and display of sculpture in museums and to explore the importance of sculptures as a forum for the expression of programmatic statements of power, prestige and the museum's own sense of itself in relation to its audience and its broader institutional aspirations. We have become familiar with the notion that sculpture has moved into the `expanded field', but this field has remained remarkably faithful to defining sculpture on its own terms. Sculpture can be distinct, but it is rarely autonomous. For too long studied apart, within a monographic or survey format, sculpture demands to be reintegrated with the other histories of which it is a part. In the interests of representing recent moves in this direction, this series will provide a forum for the publication and stimulation of new research examining sculpture's relationship with the world around it, with other disciplines and with other material contexts.

Here food isn’t formal or fussy, just focused, with recipes that honor Italian tradition while celebrating the best ingredients the Pacific Northwest has to offer. We’re talking about a generous bowl of steaming handmade pasta--served with two forks for you and a friend. Or perhaps an impeccably fresh crudo, crunchy cucumber and tangy radish accenting impossibly sweet spot prawns. Next up are the jewel tones of a beet salad with lush, homemade ricotta, or maybe a tangle of white beans and clams spiked with Goat Horn pepper--finished off with a whole roasted fish that begs to be sucked off the bones. Oh, some cheese, a gooseberry compote complementing your Robiola, or the bittersweet surprise of Campari sorbet. This layered approach is a hallmark of Ethan’s restaurants, and in his New Italian Kitchen, he offers home cooks a tantalizing roadmap for re-creating this style of eating. Prepare a feast simply by combining the lighter dishes found in “Nibbles and Bits”—from Sardine Crudo with Celery Hearts, Pine Nuts, and Lemon to Crispy Young Favas with Green Garlic Mayonnaise—or adding recipes with complex flavors for a more sophisticated meal. Try the luscious Corn and Chanterelle Soup from “The Measure of a Cook;” or the Cavatelli with Cuttlefish, Spring Onion, and Lemon from “Wheat’s Highest Calling.” Up the ante with a stunning Duck Leg Farrotto with Pearl Onions and Bloomsdale Spinach from “Starches to Grow On,” or choose one of the “Beasties of the Land,” like Skillet-Roasted Rabbit with Pancetta-Basted Fingerlings. Each combination will nudge you and your guests in new, unexpected, and unforgettable directions. Every page of Ethan Stowell’s New Italian Kitchen captures the enthusiasm, humor, and imagination that make cooking one of life’s best and most satisfying adventures. It’s got to be good--but it’s also got to be fun.
