This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On one of my returns to California, I attended the "Disabilities Expo 88" at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Among the various marvels oftech nology for the wheelchair disabled were stair-climbing wheelchairs, self raising and lowering kitchen cabinetry, and even a completely accessible "dude ranch" experience. At the same time, as a guest of the Southern California Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, I was part of a small booth (among the more than two hundred exhibitors) in which we had spinal cord injured people up and walking with a lower extremity bracing system (the reciprocating gait orthosis) used at the PEERS Spinal Injury Program in Los Angeles. I had a young man, a C6/7 level quadriplegic, walking with electrical muscle stimulation and lower extremity bracing. The system is reviewed in Chapter 8 of this book. As these "disabled" persons walked erect and upright among their wheel chair bound colleagues and took long, confident strides past exhibits extol ling the latest technological virtues of yet another "new" wheelchair (Fig. 1), I reflected on the paradox of it all. What a majority of these paralyzed people W0re really looking for was an alteration oftheir disability so that they could more normally function (in an unaltered environment). What the great majority of the exhibitors were offering was an alteration of the environment so that they could more normally function (with an unaltered disability).

Download or read book Amazing Gifts written by Mark I. Pinsky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amazing Gifts: Stories of Faith, Disability, and Inclusion is a new publication by noted religion writer Mark I. Pinsky. Pinsky has gathered stories from churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples across the country, "stories of people with disabilities and the congregations where they have found welcome." He has taken special care to include the widest range of disabilities, including non-apparent disabilities like lupus, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, depression, and mental illness. There were 54 million American with disabilities as of 2000, and that number is now being swelled by wounded warriors from the Afghan and Iraq wars and an aging population. he author emphasizes that his purpose is to not to write a resource manual on accessibility and inclusion. Rather, Pinsky seeks to share stories of how people with disabilities have experienced their faith in the context of their disability, and how congregations have gained when they value the gifts that people with disabilities bring along. "This book," notes the author, "is for congregational leaders and others who may have no expertise or personal experience with disability, but who make the congregational decisions about accessibility and inclusion."

However, I didn't allow it to define my life. I've always loved music and music production - especially hip-hop. I was determined not to let even a devastating life change sink my dreams and passion. After my injury, I spent time in a fantastic place called New Horizons, an independent living facility that helps people with disabilities learn to live their own lives with a minimum amount of assistance. It changed my life. I was able to purchase my own home, and build a recording studio under that same roof, allowing me to follow my music passion. That move opened the door to meeting many hip-hop superstars, along with other huge names in the music industry. Eventually, I even began producing my own music, recorded my own albums, and I've even done live DJ performances. Every day is a challenge and I've experienced setbacks along the way. Follow me through a star-studded romp in the Las Vegas night life and the music industry as I tell my story of personal triumph and perseverance. Never let life's dark side steal your dreams! This is the Story of Professional Musician, Studio Engineer, Filmmaker and now NFT Creator, Francis Nicholas Driscoll! The Quintessential Quadriplegic.
