Book The Indian Christ the Indian King

Download or read book The Indian Christ the Indian King written by Victoria Reifler Bricker and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria Bricker shows that "history" sometimes rests on mythological foundations and that "myth" can contain valid historical information. Her book, which is a highly original critique of postconquest historiography about the Maya, challenges major assumptions about the relationship between myth and history implicit in structuralist interpretations. The focus of the book is ethnic conflict, a theme that pervades Maya folklore and is also well documented historically. The book begins with the Spanish conquest of the Maya. In chapters on the postconquest history of the Maya, five ethnic conflicts are treated in depth: the Cancuc revolt of 1712, the Quisteil uprising of 1761, the Totonicapan rebellion of 1820, the Caste War of Yucatan (1847-1901), and the Chamulan uprising in 1869. Analytical chapters consider the relationship between historical events and modern folklore about ethnic conflict. Bricker demonstrates that myths and rituals emphasize structure at the expense of temporal and geographical provenience, treating events separated by centuries or thousands of miles as equivalent and interchangeable. An unexpected result of Bricker's research is the finding that many seemingly aboriginal elements in Maya folklore are actually of postconquest origin, and she shows that it is possible to determine precisely when and, more important, why they become part of myth and ritual. Furthermore, she finds that the patterning of the accretion of events in folklore over time provides clues to the function, or meaning, of myth and ritual for the Maya. Bricker has made use of many unpublished documents in Spanish, English, and Maya, as well as standard synthetic historical works. The appendices contain extensive samples of the oral traditions that are explained by her analysis.

Book Modern Italian Poets

Download or read book Modern Italian Poets written by Jacob Blakesley and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, the poet Eugenio Montale published his Quaderno di traduzioni and created an entirely new Italian literary genre, the “translation notebook.” The quaderni were the work of some of Italy’s foremost poets, and their translation anthologies proved fundamental for their aesthetic and cultural development. Modern Italian Poets shows how the new genre shaped the poetic practice of the poet-translators who worked within it, including Giorgio Caproni, Giovanni Giudici, Edoardo Sanguineti, Franco Buffoni, and Nobel Prize-winner Eugenio Montale, displaying how the poet-translators used the quaderni to hone their poetic techniques, experiment with new poetic metres, and develop new theories of poetics. In addition to detailed analyses of the work of these five authors, the book covers the development of the quaderno di traduzioni and its relationship to Western theories of translation, such as those of Walter Benjamin and Benedetto Croce. In an appendix, Modern Italian Poets also provides the first complete list of all translations and quaderni di traduzioni published by more than 150 Italian poet-translators.

Book A Voice in the Fire

Download or read book A Voice in the Fire written by Theodore Ell and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-03-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piero Bigongiari (1914-1997) was among the most prolific and consistent Italian poets of the last century. He was central to the ‘third generation’ of ermetismo – the movement that voiced the mysterious, the hidden and the abstract. Bigongiari was a poet of origins, exploring the grounding of cultures in landscape and myth, the depths and limitations of home, and the symbols and narratives that sustain an individual’s bond to places. His poetic technique was based on the elaboration of motifs, tracing evolving ideas in a web of verbal themes and variations. Bigongiari’s was a voice of memory, dreams and the surprises of the psyche, speaking beyond politics or ideology to express an Italian sense of existing in modern times. Yet his work is unfamiliar to most Italians and English-language readers. This book – the first English in-depth study of the poet – addresses the roots of Bigongiari’s writing and moral ideas, which took form during the Second World War. After the fall of fascism and the destruction of much of his beloved Florence, Bigongiari abandoned the mystical style of his first collection, seeking greater emotional immediacy and a more incisive view into Italy’s mental life. His fixation on origins arose from a belief that the fascist generations had been untrue to themselves; his technique of elaboration began as an attempt to sustain fragile creativity from one poem to the next. The destructive fire of war became the crucible in which he reinvented his art. Drawing on the full range of Bigongiari’s wartime writing, from his major poetry collection Rogo [Pyre or Blaze] to essays, diaries and new archival discoveries, this book is a portrait of an author overcoming crisis and confronting the failures of his time head-on. A Voice in the Fire will appeal to fans of Italian literature and poetry, and particularly fans and students of Bigongiari’s work. It will also be enjoyed by anyone interested in WWII writing, European war poetry or European history.

Book Education and Society in Florentine Tuscany

Download or read book Education and Society in Florentine Tuscany written by Robert Black and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship on pre-university education in Italy during the Middle Ages and Renaissance has been dominated by studies of individual towns or by general syntheses of Italy as a whole; in contrast, this work offers not only an archival study of a region but also attempts to discern crucial local variations on a comparative basis. It documents mass literacy in the city of Florence; the school curriculum in the individual Florentine subject towns, as well as in the city of Florence itself; the decline of church education and the rise of lay schools; the development of communal schools in Florentine Tuscany up to 1400; and teachers, schools and pupils in the city of Florence during the fifteenth century.
