Book Biblical Text and Exegetical Culture

Download or read book Biblical Text and Exegetical Culture written by Michael Fishbane and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging collection, Michael Fishbane investigates the complex and diverse relationships between the 'biblical text' and 'exegetical culture.' The author demonstrates the multiple literary dimensions and interpretative strategies that came to form the Hebrew Bible in the context of the ancient Near East, the Dead Sea Scrolls in the context of an emergent biblical-Jewish culture, and the classical rabbinic Midrash in the context of an emergent rabbinic civilization in late antiquity. Within each study, and in the collection as a whole, the author shows a broad range of creative methods, always with a scholarly concern to illuminate the religious ideas of Scripture as it was perceived through diverse hermeneutical lenses and exegetical methodologies. The studies range from the purely literary to the highly analytic, from myth to law, and from studies of symbols to the study of exegetical methods.

Book excerpt: This third volume in the new series of supplements to the Journal of Semitic Studies is a survey of the historical and religious problems involved in the interconnection between the Sabians of the Qur'an, the Mandeans of southern Iraq, and the "Sabians" of Harran in northern Mesopotamia. It offers an important examination of traditional assertions by some that the Mandaeans and by others that the Harranians should be recognized as the "Sabians" of the Qur'an, the people granted protected status in Islamic law.

Book The Neo Mandaic Dialect of Khorramshahr

Download or read book The Neo Mandaic Dialect of Khorramshahr written by Charles Häberl and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neo-Mandaic is the only surviving dialect of Aramaic to be recognized as a direct descendant of any of the classical dialects of Late Antiquity. The Mandaeans who speak it are adherents of a pre-Islamic Gnostic sect, the only such sect to survive to the present day. As such, Mandaic may be considered as both a living language of the modern Middle East and also the vehicle of one of the great religious traditions of that region, along with Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian. Unfortunately, Neo-Mandaic is severely endangered, and all signs indicate that the current generation of speakers is likely to be the last. As a description of an endangered language, this work addresses one of the chief concerns of linguists in the 21st century, namely the impending loss of the majority of the world's languages and the immense threat to both linguistic and cultural diversity that it represents. This grammar is the fi rst account of a previously undocumented dialect of Neo-Mandaic, and most thorough description of any Neo-Mandaic dialect. In addition to a description of its phonology, inflectional paradigms, and morphosyntax, it includes a collection of ten texts, transcribed and translated, as well as a concise lexicon of the vocabulary found within these texts.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Siegmund Hurwitz

  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Lilith the First Eve written by Siegmund Hurwitz and published by Daimon. This book was released on 1999 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a facinating excursion though the history of her myth, Seigmund Hurwitz presents and interprets the ancient dark-winged goddess Lilth, aslo know as the first Eve. The authors extraoridnary meticulous study of the original sources brings to light a stiking figure long lost from our awareness, yet highly relevant to a psychological understanding of today's evolving masculine and feminine identities. Case material from his analytical practice imbeds Lilith in the everyday problems of contemporary life. That an unbridled life-urge which refuses to be assimilated lies behind depression...seems to me to be a new and important discovery. By combining the experience of a comtemporaryman with this historical material, Seigmund Hurwitz sheds new light on both. - From the Foreword by Marie-Louise von Franz
