During the Song and Yuan dynasties active official and unofficial engagement in trade had formative effects on the development of the maritime trade of Quanzhou and its social and economic position both regionally and supraregionally. In the first part subjects such as the impact of the Song imperial clan and the local élites on these developments, the economic importance of metals, coins, paper money, and changes in the political economy, are amply discussed. The second part concentrates on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of archaeological data and materials, the investigation of commodities from China, their origins, distribution and final destinations, the use of foreign labour, and the particular role of South Thailand in trade connections, thus supplying the hard data underlying the main argument of the book.

Book excerpt: For over a century ceramics have been found and collected from various sites in the Philippines. The presence and distribution of these wares throughout the archipelago testify to the country's strategic location on the ancient maritime trade route and to its interaction with its southern Chinese as well as Southeast Asian neighbors. Of particular interest has been the excavation of grave goods, remnants of the burial culture of the Filipinos before the arrival of the European colonizers. Among these are the much-prized white ware and qingbai ware from Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong provinces in China, as well as white ware of Thai and Vietnamese provenance. Published in connection with an exhibition presented by the Oriental Ceramic Society of the Philippines in Manila in March 1993, this book shows the bulk of the exhibition. comprised of the delicate blue-tinged white qingbai porcelain from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province and produced in large numbers during the Southern Song period (A.D. 1127-1279). The exceptionally fine craftmanship and variety of shapes are amply illustrated in this book. Included are five previously unpublished papers by Rita C. Tan, Li Zhi-yan, Rosemary E. Scott, Allison I. Diem, and Roxanna M. Broun relating to the characteristics of white ware and to their excavation in the Philippines supplement the catalogue of illustrations.

Book excerpt: Despite China’s long tradition of venerating the past as the ultimate source of cultural authority, the discourse of antiquity prior to the Song period (960–1279) demonstrated little concern for ancient objects. With a focus on physical artifacts of the past, Song intellectuals began a new discipline, “the study of bronze and stone” (jinshixue), that generated collections of items such as bronze vessels and bells, stone steles, and ink rubbings of inscriptions carved or cast on objects. This first comprehensive study in English of the Song antiquarian movement and how it refashioned the distant past uses textual and material evidence to examine this development, which has had long-lasting influence on Chinese intellectual history and on the preservation of material objects.
