Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

Book Understanding the Origin of Matter

Download or read book Understanding the Origin of Matter written by David Blaschke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-14 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing a solid basis for the education of the next generation of researchers in hot, dense QCD (Quantum ChromoDynamics) matter. This is a rapidly growing field at the interface of the smallest, i.e. subnuclear physics, and the largest scales, namely astrophysics and cosmology. The extensive lectures presented here are based on the material used at the training school of the European COST action THOR (Theory of hot matter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions). The book is divided in three parts covering ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, several aspects related to QCD, and simulations of QCD and heavy-ion collisions. The scientific tools and methods discussed provide graduate students with the necessary skills to understand the structure of matter under extreme conditions of high densities, temperatures, and strong fields in the collapse of massive stars or a few microseconds after the big bang. In addition to the theory, the set of lectures presents hands-on material that includes an introduction to simulation programs for heavy-ion collisions, equations of state, and transport properties.

Book Lattice QCD at Finite Temperature and Density

Download or read book Lattice QCD at Finite Temperature and Density written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the operation of the RHIC heavy ion program, the theoretical understanding of QCD at finite temperature and density has become increasingly important. Though QCD at finite temperature has been extensively studied using lattice Monte-Carlo simulations over the past twenty years, most physical questions relevant for RHIC (and future) heavy ion experiments remain open. In lattice QCD at finite temperature and density there have been at least two major advances in recent years. First, for the first time calculations of real time quantities, like meson spectral functions have become available. Second, the lattice study of the QCD phase diagram and equation of state have been extended to finite baryon density by several groups. Both issues were extensively discussed in the course of the workshop. A real highlight was the study of the QCD phase diagram in (T, [mu])-plane by Z. Fodor and S. Katz and the determination of the critical end-point for the physical value of the pion mass. This was the first time such lattice calculations at, the physical pion mass have been performed. Results by Z Fodor and S. Katz were obtained using a multi-parameter re-weighting method. Other determinations of the critical end point were also presented, in particular using a Taylor expansion around [mu] = 0 (Bielefeld group, Ejiri et al.) and using analytic continuation from imaginary chemical potential (Ph. de Forcrand and O. Philipsen). The result based on Taylor expansion agrees within errors with the new prediction of Z. Fodor and S. Katz, while methods based on analytic continuation still predict a higher value for the critical baryon density. Most of the thermodynamics studies in full QCD (including those presented at this workshop) have been performed using quite coarse lattices, a = 0.2-0.3 fm. Therefore one may worry about cutoff effects in different thermodynamic quantities, like the transition temperature T{sub tr}. At the workshop U. Heller presented a study of the transition temperature for three different lattice spacings and performed a continuum extrapolation of T{sub tr} for the first time. Lattice calculations of the meson spectral functions were presented by M. Asakawa, S. Datta, E. Laermann and H. Matsufuru. These show that charmonia ground states ([eta]{sub c} and J/[psi]) continue to exist in the plasma at least up to a temperature of 1.7 T{sub tr}. At what temperature charmonia states cease to exist is not yet clear. Calculations presented by M. Asakawa show dissolution of the J/[psi] at T = 1.7 T{sub tr}, while the analysis presented H. Matsufuru provided evidence that ground state charmonia still exist at this temperature. S. Datta argued that the ground state charmonia is likely to dissolve only for temperatures T> 2.25 T{sub tr}, while the P-states are dissociated at, 1.1 T{sub tr}. It is also very interesting that, even in the case of light quarks, meson spectral functions show a resonance-like structure in the plasma phase (talk by E. Laermann). Finally attempts to calculate transport properties in the Quark Gluon Plasma were presented by S. Gupta. The workshop devoted special attention to the finite temperature modification of inter-quark forces and color screening, another area where considerable progress has been made in recent years (talks by 0. Kaczmarek, K. Petrov, O. Philipsen and F. Zantow). Many other new theoretical developments which cannot be discussed here were also presented on the workshop. Altogether the workshop was a great success, for which we thank all the participants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive survey is the result of a four year effort by many leading researchers in the field to produce both a readable introduction and a yardstick for the many upcoming experiments using heavy ion collisions to examine the properties of nuclear matter. The books falls naturally into five large parts, first examining the bulk properties of strongly interacting matter, including its equation of state and phase structure. Part II discusses elementary hadronic excitations of nuclear matter, Part III addresses the concepts and models regarding the space-time dynamics of nuclear collision experiments, Part IV collects the observables from past and current high-energy heavy-ion facilities in the context of the theoretical predictions specific to compressed baryonic matter. Part V finally gives a brief description of the experimental concepts. The book explicitly addresses everyone working or planning to enter the field of high-energy nuclear physics.

Book Understanding Deconfinement In Qcd Proceedings Of The International Workshop

Download or read book Understanding Deconfinement In Qcd Proceedings Of The International Workshop written by David Blaschke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-12-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes our contemporary understanding of the deconfinement transition in QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential. Questions as to whether a quark-gluon plasma exists in the interior of dense astrophysical objects or which bound-state signals have to be studied in order to unambiguously detect the QCD phase transition(s) in future heavy-ion collision programmes at RHIC and LHC are addressed. Progress in answering these questions requires a fusion of lattice QCD with other nonperturbative approaches and low-energy effective models for QCD. Experts in these fields present in the book their methods and their results in understanding the deconfinement phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book is an extensive set of lecture notes on various aspects of non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics ? the fundamental theory of strong interaction on which nuclear and hadronic physics is based. The original edition of the book, written in the mid-1980's, had more of a review style. In the second edition the outline remains the same, but the text has been completely rewritten, and extended. Apart from the new developments over the years, this edition has benefited from several graduate courses which the author has taught at Stony Brook during the last decade. The text is now complemented by exercises and has a total of about 1000 references to major works, arranged by subject.Three major issues ? the structure of the QCD vacuum, the structure of hadrons, and the physics of hot/dense matter ? are addressed as physics problems. Therefore, when discussing any specific subject, the book attempts to incorporate (1) all the solid theoretical results, (2) experimental information, and (3) results of numerical (lattice) simulations, which are playing an increasing role in quantum field theory in general, and the development of QCD in particular. The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and Superdense Matter takes the reader from the first encounter with the subject to the front line of research, as quickly as possible.

Book Density Functional Equation of State and Its Application to the Phenomenology of Heavy Ion Collisions

Download or read book Density Functional Equation of State and Its Application to the Phenomenology of Heavy Ion Collisions written by Agnieszka Malgorzata Sorensen and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent goal within the field of modern heavy-ion collisions is to uncover the phase diagram of QCD. Studies of the properties of systems created in heavy-ion collisions strongly suggest that a new state of matter described by quark and gluon degrees of freedom, the quark-gluon plasma, is created when nuclei are collided at very high-energies. Consequently, the QCD phase diagram may contain a rich structure in regions currently accessible to heavy-ion experiments, including a possible critical point where the transformation between hadronic and partonic matter changes from a smooth crossover to a first-order phase transition. Whether this is the case will have to be born out through a combination of experimental analyses and state-of-the-art simulations of heavy-ion collisions. We present a mean-field model of the dense nuclear matter equation of state designed for use in computationally demanding hadronic transport simulations. Our approach, based on the relativistic Landau Fermi-liquid theory, allows us to construct a family of equations of state spanning a wide range of possible bulk properties of dense QCD matter. For the application to simulations of heavy-ion collisions at intermediate beam energies, and in particular having in mind studies centered on probing the regions of the QCD phase diagram most relevant to the search for the QCD critical point, we further present and discuss parametrizations of the developed equation of state describing dense nuclear matter with two phase transitions: the known nuclear-liquid gas phase transition in ordinary nuclear matter, with its experimentally observed properties, and a postulated phase transition at high temperatures and high baryon number densities, meant to model the QCD phase transition from hadronic to quark and gluon degrees of freedom. We implement the developed model in the hadronic transport code SMASH, and show that the resulting dynamic behavior reproduces theoretical expectations for the thermodynamic properties of the system based on the underlying equation of state. In particular, we discuss simulations of systems initialized in regions of the phase diagram affected by the conjectured QCD critical point, and we demonstrate that they reproduce effects due to critical behavior. Specifically, we show that pair distribution functions calculated from hadronic transport simulation data are consistent with theoretical expectations based on the second-order cumulant ratio, and can be used as a signature of crossing the phase diagram in the vicinity of a critical point. Through this, we validate the use of hadronic transport codes as a tool to study signals of a phase transition in dense nuclear matter. We additionally present a novel method that may enable a measurement of the speed of sound and its derivative with respect to the baryon number density in heavy-ion collisions. The devised approach is based on a connection between the speed of sound and the cumulants of the net baryon number, which in the context of the search for the QCD critical point are given considerable attention due to their potential to signal critical fluctuations. We confirm the applicability of the proposed method in two models of dense nuclear matter, including the parametrization of the equation of state developed in this work. Application of our approach to available experimental data implies that the derivative of the speed of sound is non-monotonic in systems created in collisions at intermediate to low energies, which in turn may be connected to non-trivial features in the underlying equation of state.

Book Exploring the Phase Diagram of V QCD with Neutron Star Merger Simulations

Download or read book Exploring the Phase Diagram of V QCD with Neutron Star Merger Simulations written by Tuna Demircik and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determining the phase structure of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and its Equation of State (EOS) at densities and temperatures realized inside neutron stars and their mergers is a long-standing open problem. The holographic V-QCD framework provides a model for the EOS of dense and hot QCD, which describes the deconfinement phase transition between a dense baryonic and a quark matter phase. We use this model in fully general relativistic hydrodynamic (GRHD) simulations to study the formation of quark matter and the emitted gravitational wave signal of binary systems that are similar to the first ever observed neutron star merger event GW170817.
