Book Discovery Of The Higgs Boson

Download or read book Discovery Of The Higgs Boson written by Aleandro Nisati and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent observation of the Higgs boson has been hailed as the scientific discovery of the century and led to the 2013 Nobel Prize in physics. This book describes the detailed science behind the decades-long search for this elusive particle at the Large Electron Positron Collider at CERN and at the Tevatron at Fermilab and its subsequent discovery and characterization at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Written by physicists who played leading roles in this epic search and discovery, this book is an authoritative and pedagogical exposition of the portrait of the Higgs boson that has emerged from a large number of experimental measurements. As the first of its kind, this book should be of interest to graduate students and researchers in particle physics.

Book QCD Corrections to Higgs Boson Production

Download or read book QCD Corrections to Higgs Boson Production written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss the O([alpha]{sub s}) QCD radiative corrections to Higgs boson production in the limit in which the top quark is much heavier than the Higgs boson. The subleading corrections, of O([alpha]{sub s}M{sub H}2/M{sub top}2), are presented for the decay H → [gamma][gamma] and shown to be small.

Book The Mass Gap and Its Applications

Download or read book The Mass Gap and Its Applications written by Vakhtang Gogokhia and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the most up-to-date theory of the strong interaction. Its predictions have been verified experimentally, and it is a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics. However, standard perturbative procedures fail if applied to low-energy QCD. Even the discovery of the Higgs Boson will not solve the problem of masses originating from the non-perturbative behavior of QCD. This book presents a new method, the introduction of the 'mass gap', first suggested by Arthur Jaffe and Edward Witten at the turn of the millennium. It attempts to show that, to explain the mass-spectrum of QCD, one needs the mass scale parameter (the mass gap) instead of other massive particles. The energy difference between the lowest order and the vacuum state in Yang Mills quantum field theory, the mass gap is in principle responsible for the large-scale structure of the QCD ground state, and thus also for its non-perturbative phenomena at low energies. This book not only presents the mass gap, but also details the applications and outlook of the mass gap method. A detailed summary of references and problems are included as well. This book is best for scientists and highly advanced students interested in non-perturbative effects and methods in QCD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating tour of particle physics from Nobel Prize winner Leon Lederman. At the root of particle physics is an invincible sense of curiosity. Leon Lederman embraces this spirit of inquiry as he moves from the Greeks' earliest scientific observations to Einstein and beyond to chart this unique arm of scientific study. His survey concludes with the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe, quarks and all--it's the dogged pursuit of this almost mystical entity that inspires Lederman's witty and accessible history.

Book New Observables for CP Violation in Higgs Decays

Download or read book New Observables for CP Violation in Higgs Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current experimental data on the 125 GeV Higgs boson still allow room for large $CP$ violation. The observables usually considered in this context are triple product asymmetries, which require an input of four visible particles after imposing momentum conservation. Here, we point out a new class of $CP$ -violating observables in Higgs physics which require only three reconstructed momenta. They may arise if the process involves an interference of amplitudes with different intermediate particles, which provide distinct "strong phases" in the form of the Breit-Wigner widths, in addition to possible "weak phases" that arise from $CP$ -violating couplings of the Higgs in the Lagrangian. As an example, we propose a forward-backward asymmetry of the charged lepton in the three-body Higgs decay, h 2!l $-$ l + [gamma], as a probe for $CP$ -violating Higgs couplings to Z[gamma] and [gamma][gamma] pairs. In conclusion, we also discuss other processes exhibiting this type of $CP$ violation.

Book A Search for Narrow States in Radiative Upsilon Decays

Download or read book A Search for Narrow States in Radiative Upsilon Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for new states produced in radiative UPSILON(1S) decays is accomplished by observing the inclusive photon energy spectrum. A narrow resonance in the energy spectrum indicates the existence of a new state X produced by the process UPSILON .-->. .gamma. X. The analysis is based on approximately 0.44 x 106 UPSILON(1S) events produced at the DORIS II ee− storage ring. These data were collected with the Crystal Ball detector between April 1983 and May 1986. This analysis finds no evidence for a new state, so upper limits on the branching ratio BR(UPSILON .-->. .gamma. X) are derived, assuming the state X decays primarily to high-multiplicity hadronic final states. In particular, if the state X were a minimal Higgs particle, its primary decay mode would be to the heaviest fermion-antifermion pair energetically available. For the radiative UPSILON(1S) decays studied here, the heavy fermions would be c anti c or s anti s quark states, over most of the relevant Higgs' mass range. The resulting upper limit for BR(UPSILON(1S) .-->. .gamma. X) is highly energy dependent but for X mass between 1.5 GeV and 8.0 GeV, the 90% confidence level upper limit is better than 8.0 x 10−4. For a Higgs' mass near 5.0 GeV, the upper limit is about 2.0 x 10−4 which is approximately equal to the lowest order calculation for the Wilczek mechanism. The Wilczek calculation with QCD radiative corrections predict branching ratios below the limits set here for all Higgs' masses.
