Book Proceedings of the Conference in Honour of Murray Gell Mann s 80th Birthday

Download or read book Proceedings of the Conference in Honour of Murray Gell Mann s 80th Birthday written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on Quantum Mechanics, Elementary Particles, Quantum Cosmology and Complexity was held in honour of Professor Murray Gell-Mann's 80th birthday in Singapore on 24?26 February 2010. The conference paid tribute to Professor Gell-Mann's great achievements in the elementary particle physics. This notable birthday volume contains the presentations made at the conference by many eminent scientists, including Nobel laureates C N Yang, G 't Hooft and K Wilson. Other invited speakers include G Zweig, N Samios, M Karliner, G Karl, M Shifman, J Ellis, S Adler and A Zichichi. About Murray Gell-Mann Murray Gell-Mann, born September 15, 1929, won the 1969 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. His contributions span the entire history of particle physics, from the early days of the particle zoo to the modern day QCD. Along the way, even as he proposed new quantum numbers to bring order into the zoo, he had fun in naming them. And thus was born Strangeness, Flavor, Hadrons, Baryons, Leptons, the Eightfold Way, Color, Quarks, Gluons and, with Harald Fritzsch, the standard field theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). He also proposed with Richard Feynman the V-A theory of beta decay. Gell-Mann discovered the Current Algebra, proposed (with Levy) the sigma model of pions and the see-saw mechanism for the neutrino masses.

Book Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer IV

Download or read book Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer IV written by Anatoly Radyushkin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings include talks given at the 4th Workshop on Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer at Jefferson Lab, Newport News, VA USA, the world's leading facility performing research on nuclear, hadronic and quark-gluon structure of matter. Exclusive reactions are becoming one of the major sources of information about the deep structure of the nucleons and other hadrons. The workshop focused on the application of a variety of exclusive reactions at high momentum transfer, utilizing unpolarized and polarized beams and targets, to obtain information about nucleon ground state and excited state structure at short distances. This is a subject which is central to the programs of current accelerators and especially planned future facilities. The topics include: generalized parton distributions, deeply virtual Compton scattering, deeply virtual meson production (DVMP), transverse structure of hadrons (TMD), hadron form factors ? elastic and transition, quantum chromodynamics (perturbative, non-perturbative, lattice calculations), and physics to study at an Electron Ion Collider.

Book The Development of Perturbative QCD

Download or read book The Development of Perturbative QCD written by G. Altarelli and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of a collection of carefully selected review papers and lecture notes written by the author on Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (PQCD) and its experimental tests. A leading authority who has contributed significantly to the development of PQCD for more than 20 years, the author has selected articles on the basis of their present interest. These articles cover different aspects of the subject without unnecessary duplication and are accompanied by commentaries. Also, original material, specially written for this book, has been added to integrate and update the results and their presentation. Hence, more than providing a historical perspective on the subject, this volume also serves well as an authoritative guidebook on Perturbative QCD.

Download or read book Quantum Field Theory Ii written by Misha Shifman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook grew out of lecture notes the author used in delivering a quantum field theory (QFT) course for students (both in high energy physics and condensed matter) who already had an initial exposure to the subject. It begins with the path integral method of quantization presented in a systematic and clear-cut manner. Perturbation theory is generalized beyond tree level, to include radiative corrections (loops). Renormalization procedures and the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG flow) are discussed, asymptotic freedom of non-Abelian gauge theories is derived, and some applications in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are considered, with a brief digression into the Standard Model (SM). The SM case requires a study of the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry, a phenomenon which would be more appropriate to call 'Higgsing of the gauge bosons.' Other regimes attainable in gauge theories are explained as well. In the condensed matter part, the Heisenberg and Ising model are discussed. The present textbook differs from many others in that it is relatively concise and, at the same time, teaches students to carry out actual calculations which they may encounter in QFT-related applications.

Book Quantum Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel Le Bellac
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2011-12-01
  • ISBN : 1139450794
  • Pages : 27 pages

Download or read book Quantum Physics written by Michel Le Bellac and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum physics allows us to understand the nature of the physical phenomena which govern the behavior of solids, semi-conductors, lasers, atoms, nuclei, subnuclear particles and light. In Quantum Physics, Le Bellac provides a thoroughly modern approach to this fundamental theory. Throughout the book, Le Bellac teaches the fundamentals of quantum physics using an original approach which relies primarily on an algebraic treatment and on the systematic use of symmetry principles. In addition to the standard topics such as one-dimensional potentials, angular momentum and scattering theory, the reader is introduced to more recent developments at an early stage. These include a detailed account of entangled states and their applications, the optical Bloch equations, the theory of laser cooling and of magneto-optical traps, vacuum Rabi oscillations and an introduction to open quantum systems. This is a textbook for a modern course on quantum physics, written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Book Dynamical Stabilization of the Fermi Scale

Download or read book Dynamical Stabilization of the Fermi Scale written by Francesco Sannino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong dynamics constitutes one of the pillars of the standard model of particle interactions, and it accounts for the bulk of the visible matter in the universe made by ordinary protons and neutrons. It is therefore a well posed question to ask if the rest of the universe can be described in terms of new highly natural four-dimensional strongly coupled theories. The main goal of this lecture-based primer is to provide a coherent overview of how new strong dynamics can be employed to address the relevant challenges in particle physics and cosmology from composite Higgs dynamics to dark matter and inflation. We will first introduce the topic of dynamical breaking of the electroweak symmetry also known as technicolor. The knowledge of the phase diagram of strongly coupled theories plays a fundamental role when trying to construct viable extensions of the standard model. Therefore we present the state-of-the-art of the phase diagram for gauge theories as function of the number of colors, flavors, matter representation and gauge group. Recent extensions of the standard model featuring minimal technicolor theories are then introduced as relevant examples. We finally show how technicolor or in general new strongly coupled theories can lead to natural candidates of composite dark matter and inflation.
