Book excerpt: Human exposure to environmental contaminants is a well-known phenomenon in the Canadian Arctic. The Inuit of Nunavik are exposed to a plethora of toxic substances that are carried from southern to northern latitudes by oceanic and atmospheric transport and biomagnified in Arctic food webs. As the Inuit traditional diet comprises large amounts of tissues from marine mammals, fish and terrestrial wild game, the Inuit are more exposed to metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) than populations living in southern regions. Metals of concern include mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and other contaminants of concern are persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Book Environmental Determinants of Human Health

Download or read book Environmental Determinants of Human Health written by Jozef M. Pacyna and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polluted air and contaminated food and water are major causes of human health deterioration, but public health policy has long struggled to effectively address these concerns. This timely book--written for a wide audience of policy makers, researchers, and general readers--synthesizes what we already know about environmental hazards, identifies the gaps in our knowledge, and provides a roadmap for reducing human exposure to environmental pollution. With contributions from leading experts, Environmental Determinants of Human Health examines numerous pollutants, both inorganic and organic, in the context of their human health impacts. Individual chapters explore exposure pathways, macroeconomic impacts of human health deterioration, technological and non-technological methods for reducing exposures, monetary and non-monetary benefits from exposure reduction, and risk communication and awareness, including citizen participation approaches. This volume is a crucial text for policy makers requiring scientific justification for the development of new environmental regulations, scientists researching public health and environmental contamination, and members of the public interested in human health issues.

Book Counting Feminicide

Download or read book Counting Feminicide written by Catherine D'Ignazio and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why grassroots data activists in Latin America count feminicide—and how this vital social justice work challenges mainstream data science. What isn’t counted doesn’t count. And mainstream institutions systematically fail to account for feminicide, the gender-related killing of women and girls, including cisgender and transgender women. Against this failure, Counting Feminicide brings to the fore the work of data activists across the Americas who are documenting such murders—and challenging the reigning logic of data science by centering care, memory, and justice in their work. Drawing on Data Against Feminicide, a large-scale collaborative research project, Catherine D’Ignazio describes the creative, intellectual, and emotional labor of feminicide data activists who are at the forefront of a data ethics that rigorously and consistently takes power and people into account. Individuals, researchers, and journalists—these data activists scour news sources to assemble spreadsheets and databases of women killed by gender-related violence, then circulate those data in a variety of creative and political forms. Their work reveals the potential of restorative/transformative data science—the use of systematic information to, first, heal communities from the violence and trauma produced by structural inequality and, second, envision and work toward the world in which such violence has been eliminated. Specifically, D’Ignazio explores the possibilities and limitations of counting and quantification—reducing complex social phenomena to convenient, sortable, aggregable forms—when the goal is nothing short of the elimination of gender-related violence. Counting Feminicide showcases the incredible power of data feminism in practice, in which each murdered woman or girl counts, and, in being counted, joins a collective demand for the restoration of rights and a transformation of the gendered order of the world.

Book excerpt: According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are over two billion people around the world suffering from anemia. Iron deficiency, which is the main cause of anemia, is the most common nutrition disorder worldwide (WHO, 1998). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is particularly prevalent among babies, children, women, ethnic groups and low-income families and, to a greater extent, among people living in developing countries (WHO, 2001). In 2001, the prevalence of anemia among women was estimated at 10.3% in industrialized countries and 42.3% in non-industrialized countries (WHO, 2001). The prevalence of anemia in Aboriginal children of Canada is eight times higher than among similar non-aboriginal populations in Canada and is especially high among Inuit children (Christofides et al., 2005). Until now, the prevalence of anemia in Nunavik women was unknown, however it was suspected that similar results existed. WHO recognizes anemia as a widespread public health problem having major consequences on health as well as on social and economical development (WHO, 2001). The economic implications of iron deficiency are linked to the therapeutic costs involved in curing anemia, impaired pregnancy outcomes and the medical costs associated with a higher prevalence of certain infections.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this report is to outline the demographic and social characteristics of the Inuit population who participated in the 2004 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey. Socio-demographic factors are of major significance in determining a population's health. These factors may be interpreted as risk or protective factors in relation to various diseases and should be taken into consideration in planning health services. This theme paper begins by presenting a description of the survey sample and goes on to consider the Inuit's mode of living, including factors such as household composition, adoption and marital status. It then addresses topics related to economic status: education, individual income, occupation and job status. In addition, the subject of personal perceptions of one's own health status is also included in the last section of the paper.

Book Qanuippitaa

Download or read book Qanuippitaa written by Hannah Ayukawa and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1992 health survey among the Inuit of Nunavik, hearing impairment was the most commonly reported health problem (Santé Québec, 1994). The first section of this paper presents the 2004 Nunavik Inuit Health Survey's findings on the prevalence of hearing loss and the variables associated with it. In 1984, the Hearing and Otitis program began to develop audiology services in Nunavik. Since 1994, there have been two audiologists, hearing aid specialist and otolaryngologist visits, as well as numerous Inuit hearing health care providers, providing clinical and rehabilitation services and working on prevention and research projects. Whereas students and more recently preschoolers have been targeted in screening programs, this survey in 2004 was the first time that the general adult population could be systematically approached. The findings of the survey have already led to a new focus clinically on older members of the communities as well as increased efforts in hearing loss prevention for men via promotion of ear protection. The second section of the paper briefly describes the Nunavik Inuit's dental health, which is generally an indicator of the overall health and quality of life of the population under study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At its core, Indigenous Child and Youth Care: Weaving Two Heart Stories Together is about unity. It seeks to create a heart-to-heart practice by bridging Indigenous ways of knowing with Western Child and Youth Care practices, encouraging students to approach their work with a more open understanding of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit worldviews. Author Cherylanne James guides students through self-location by dismantling their pre-existing biases regarding Indigenous Peoples, understanding personal privilege and power, educating themselves on Canadian and Indigenous history and contexts, and learning about the pervasive impacts of colonialism. Students will cultivate a practice that encourages ethical spaces of engagement while steering away from surface-level or disingenuous interactions. The text applies concepts and theories such as relational accountability, interconnectivity, resurgence, community-centred approaches, wise practices, relationship-building, anti-oppression, anti-racist, and social justice frameworks to enrich CYC practices and prepare students to engage with Indigenous children, youth, and families in an informed, meaningful way. Indigenous Child and Youth Care is designed as a journey, wherein the student reflects while they learn and grow as a CYC professional. It includes a variety of pedagogical features that catalyze thoughtful interaction with the material, such as a glossary, discussion questions, reflective practice question boxes, and additional resources for further learning. This is a powerful and vital text for college and university students in Child and Youth Care and Human Services. Book First Nations Gaming in Canada

Download or read book First Nations Gaming in Canada written by Yale D. Belanger and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While games of chance have been part of the Aboriginal cultural landscape since before European contact, large-scale commercial gaming facilities within First Nations communities are a relatively new phenomenon in Canada. First Nations Gaming in Canada is the first multidisciplinary study of the role of gaming in indigenous communities north of the 49th parallel. Bringing together some of Canada’s leading gambling researchers, the book examines the history of Aboriginal gaming and its role in indigenous political economy, the rise of large-scale casinos and cybergaming, the socio-ecological impact of problem gambling, and the challenges of labour unions and financial management. The authors also call attention to the dearth of socio-economic impact studies of gambling in First Nations communities while providing models to address this growing issue of concern.

Download or read book Qanuippitaa how are We written by Valérie Messier and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inuit way of life and the special relationship they have with animals and the land during traditional activities of hunting, fishing and trapping, result in the Inuit people being highly exposed to pathogenic agents present in the environment and among wild animals. In Nunavik, common practices such as the consumption of untreated water and raw meat, including that of fish and both marine and land mammals, increase the risk of infection by a variety of micro-organisms associated with this environment. There is little documentation concerning zoonotic diseases ? infections transmissible from animals to humans ? among the Inuit of Nunavik. For a number of these diseases, little is known about specific hosts and modes of transmission in the Arctic environment. Additionally, their clinical presentation is often unspecific and can make diagnosis extremely difficult. All of these factors make it difficult to determine the significance of these infections for the population of Nunavik.
