Book Putting Skill to Work

Download or read book Putting Skill to Work written by Nichola Lowe and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument for reimagining skill in a way that can extend economic opportunity to workers at the bottom of the labor market. The United States has a jobs problem—not enough well-paying jobs to go around and not enough clear pathways leading to them. Skill development is critical for addressing this employment crisis, but there are many unresolved questions about who has skill, how it is attained, and whose responsibility it is to build skills over time. In this book, Nichola Lowe tells the stories of pioneering workforce intermediaries—nonprofits, unions, community colleges—that harness this ambiguity around skill to extend economic opportunity to workers at the bottom of the labor market. Skill development confers shared value to both workers and employers because it lies at the intersection of their respective interests. Connecting skill to economic inequality, Lowe calls for solutions that push employers to accept greater responsibility for skill development. She examines real-world examples of workplace intermediaries throughout the United States, exploring in detail the work of manufacturing-focused organizations in Chicago and Milwaukee, and a network of community colleges in North Carolina that coordinates training for biopharmaceutical manufacturers. As workforce intermediaries help employers reinterpret skill, they also convince them to implement inclusive work-based systems that extend family-sustaining wages and better working conditions across the entire workforce. With renewed policy emphasis on skill development, these opportunity-rich solutions can be further expanded—ensuring workers across the entire educational spectrum contribute skills that drive innovation forward and share the gains they generate for the twenty-first century workplace.

  • Author : S. M. Reid-Henry
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book The Cuban Cure written by S. M. Reid-Henry and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, his second declaration, after socialism, was that Cuba would become a leader in international science. In biotechnology he would be proven right and, today, Cuba counts a meningitis B vaccine and cutting-edge cancer therapies to its name. But how did this politically and geographically isolated country make such impressive advances? Drawing on a unique ethnography, and blending the insights of anthropology, sociology, and geography, The Cuban Cure shows how Cuba came to compete with U. S. pharmaceutical giants—despite a trade embargo and crippling national debt. In uncovering what is distinct about Cuban biomedical science, S. M. Reid-Henry examines the forms of resistance that biotechnology research in Cuba presents to the globalization of western models of scientific culture and practice. He illustrates the epistemic, social, and ideological clashes that take place when two cultures of research meet, and how such interactions develop as political and economic circumstances change. Through a novel argument about the intersection of socioeconomic systems and the nature of innovation, The Cuban Cure presents an illuminating study of politics and science in the context of globalization.

Book Handbook of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Download or read book Handbook of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology written by Jay P Rho and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-03-31 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stay up to date with changes in the biopharmaceutical products market! With the growth rate of biopharmaceutical products ascending rapidly since the 1980s, the number of biotechnology companies has risen to more than 1200 new businesses in the Unites States alone. This dramatic increase creates a new set of challenges in education, putting demands on teachers and students to keep pace with innovations in terminology and techniques. The Handbook of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is essential in meeting those challenges. A practical compendium of biotechnology-produced drugs, the Handbook of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology covers general principles of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, putting usable information in the hands of those who need it most. The book presents descriptions that break down each pharmaceutical product by pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, clinical applications, toxicities, and dosage guidelines. It also reviews prescription products, discussing clinical uses and trials, adverse reactions, and more. Tables, figures, and extensive references add to each comprehensive summary. The Handbook of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology also includes up-to-date information on: monoclonal antibodies (Abciximab, Muromonab-CD3) enzymes and regulators of enzyme activity (Alteplase, clotting factors, Dornase alpha) anticytokines olgonucleotide and gene therapy hematopoietic growth factors (interleukins, interferons, colony stimulating factors, erythropoietin) As the worldwide production and sales of biotechnology-derived pharmaceuticals and diagnostics continues to grow, teachers, students, and clinical pharmacists need to maintain a clear and current understanding of the field. The Handbook of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology presents a thoughtful and thorough guide to keeping pace in this evolving industry.

Hwa Lim has been pivotal in establishing and shaping the field of bioinformatics, his book will open this world to many others.”Malorye A Branca Vice President Cambridge Healthtech Institute Publications, USA “As an ‘outsider’ to this extremely hot field of research and business, I am awed by the clarity and simplicity this author is able to transmit to the readers. As the Vice President for Research of a growing research university with fast and robust growing activity in this area, I have tried, in vain, to read other books about this subject. I usually am more confused by jargons beyond my grasp. This is the first book I read which tells me what it was, what it is, where it is, and where it is expected to be in the years to come. I can only say, BRAVO!” Da Hsuan Feng, PhD Vice President for Research and Graduate Education and Professor of Physics Office of the Vice President for Research & Graduate Education, University of Texas at Dallas, USA “This book is thoroughly documented and contains all you need to know to be really on top of the biotech subject. Genetically Yours is a true “Bio-Bible”, and I strongly recommend anyone who is interested in the field to read it. As well as Hwa A Lim's field of expertise (bioinformatics) help us to algorithmically decipher the complex world of genes, his book gives us a comprehensive understanding of the biotech industry.”Olivier Griperay Vice President, Biotech Projects Invest in France Agency North America, The French Agency for International Investment, USA “A topical book, well timed and beautifully written by one of the foremost and dynamic proponents of the field of Genetics and its impact on our daily lives, especially on the fields of medicaments, food and informatics. With this book, Hwa Lim does an admirable service to professionals and lay persons alike, assembling and nicely presenting the Genetics scientific facts and findings, and their socio-economic and business implications. His immaculate discussion of the genetic composition of humans and other living creatures and commodities, makes us hope that he will soon take on the challenge of covering the spiritual dimension, because that holds a few relevant variables that beg to be addressed.”Salah H Mandil, PhD Vice President eStrategies WiseKey SA, Geneva and previously: Director, Health Informatics & Telematics World Health Organisation Geneva, Switzerland “In this book, Dr Hwa A Lim succinctly captures the genomics revolution offering the reader excellent view of the knowledge and opportunities available in modern biological sciences.
