Book excerpt: “What is at stake is authenticity. . . . Sooner or later Christians tire of public meetings that are profoundly inauthentic, regardless of how well (or poorly) arranged, directed, performed. We long to meet, corporately, with the living and majestic God and to offer him the praise that is his due.”—D. A. CarsonWorship is a hot topic, but the ways that Christians from different traditions view it vary greatly. What is worship? More important, what does it look like in action, both in our corporate gatherings and in our daily lives? These concerns—the blending of principle and practice—are what Worship by the Book addresses.Cutting through cultural clichés, D. A. Carson, Mark Ashton, Kent Hughes, and Timothy Keller explore, respectively:· Worship Under the Word· Following in Cranmer’s Footsteps· Free Church Worship: The Challenge of Freedom· Reformed Worship in the Global City “This is not a comprehensive theology of worship,” writes Carson. “Still less is it a sociological analysis of current trends or a minister’s manual chockfull of ‘how to’ instructions.” Rather, this book offers pastors, other congregational leaders, and seminary students a thought-provoking biblical theology of worship, followed by a look at how three very different traditions of churchmanship might move from this theological base to a better understanding of corporate worship. Running the gamut from biblical theology to historical assessment all the way to sample service sheets, Worship by the Book shows how local churches in diverse traditions can foster corporate worship that is God-honoring, Word-revering, heartfelt, and historically and culturally informed.

Book Worship Wars in Early Lutheranism

Download or read book Worship Wars in Early Lutheranism written by Joseph Herl and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How important was music to Martin Luther? Drawing on hundreds of liturgical documents, contemporary accounts of services, books on church music, and other sources, Joseph Herl rewrites the history of music and congregational song in German Lutheran churches. Herl traces the path of music and congregational song in the Lutheran church from the Reformation to 1800, to show how it acquired its reputation as the "singing church." In the centuries after its founding, in a debate that was to have a strong impact on Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries, the Lutheran church was torn over a new style of church music that many found more entertaining than devotional. By the end of the eighteenth century, Lutherans were trying to hold their own against a new secularism, and many members of the clergy favored wholesale revision or even abandonment of the historic liturgy in order to make worship more relevant in contemporary society. Herl paints a vivid picture of these developments, using as a backdrop the gradual transition from a choral to a congregational liturgy. The author eschews the usual analyses of musical repertoire and deals instead with events, people and ideas, drawing readers inside the story and helping them sense what it must have been like to attend a Lutheran church in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Parallel developments in Catholic churches are discussed, as are the rise of organ accompaniment of hymns and questions of musical performance practice. Although written with academic precision, the writing is clear and comprehensible to the nonspecialist, and entertaining anecdotes abound. Appendixes include translations of several important historical documents and a set of tables outlining the Lutheran mass as presented in 172 different liturgical orders. The bibliography includes 400 Lutheran church orders and reports of ecclesiastical visitations read by the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian worship in North America has undergone great change in recent years. But change always brings uncertainty -- at times even division -- about what constitutes "authentic worship." This important book reviews a wide variety of current perspectives and offers a fresh outlook on the contemporary practice of Christian worship. In order to provide the widest, most insightful discussion on present-day worship practices yet assembled, the authors gathered a team of church musicians, ministers, worship leaders, and educators from eight church traditions. Discerning the Spirits is the fruit of their work. Shaped by the wisdom of men and women like Marva Dawn, Justo Gonzalez, C. Michael Hawn, and John Witvliet, this book broadens today's "worship wars" into a bigger, richer discussion that moves from arguments over musical tastes to good thinking about the overall purpose of worship in relation to church life and God himself. Sidebar articles and quotes are meant to draw readers and study groups into dialogue on these issues. Whether one plays a leadership role in church worship or is simply grappling with questions about it, Discerning the Spirits is a must-read.

Download or read book Worship Wars written by David Waddell and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you worship? Where do you worship? Do you believe worship should be traditional, solemn, and reverential, or should worship be contemporary, lyrical, and lively? These questions about the proper venue, style, or manner in which we worship seem to never go away in Christianity. But is there a right answer? In Worship Wars, author David Waddell explores this question by going beyond style and taking a more personal view of worship. With both humorous and earnest reflections on his own flaws, faux pas, and failures in worship, Waddell looks to the Bible and to the kings of Israel and Judah, where he reveals an order of worship using the stories of the kings as examples to teach better worship practices. No one is perfect in their worship habits and patterns, but the Bible offers a way for worshippers to have the freedom to worship in spirit and in truth, regardless of the style. Whether our individual acts of worship are traditional, contemporary, or a combination of each, we can all discover a lifestyle of worship in spirit and in truth that will please God and bring us all closer to Jesus.

Why bother with discipleship? Because the cost of non-discipleship is too great! Living with radical abandonment for God's glory, faithful adherence to His person, and urgent obedience to His ministry is the only way to live a successful, fruitful Christian life. This book offers a step-by-step process for living out the Great Commission to revolutionize the world through the local church.

Book Worship Leaders We Are Not Rock Stars

Download or read book Worship Leaders We Are Not Rock Stars written by Stephen Miller and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do you lead worship? Often the motives are mixed. You find yourself wanting to point people to Jesus but also feeling a desire to be noticed and praised, to make yourself the center of attention. Stephen Miller is the worship pastor for a large church of young, energetic Christians. He and his band record albums and lead worship for conferences all over the country. He knows the temptation to make himself the show, to pursue fame, to seek the applause of other people. And he has learned to want nothing to do with it. In this book, Miller exhorts his fellow worship leaders to make Jesus the center of all their efforts. He teaches how to do this with Scripture, teaching, prayer, story, and song. In all, Miller’s call for worship leaders is to lead worship, whole-hearted and whole-minded exalting of God, rather than making a spectacle out of it. Worship Leaders, We’re Not Rock Stars will encourage and challenge worship leaders by clarifying their purpose and identity, and by doing so will bless those they lead.

Download or read book Let s Just Praise the Lord written by Kieth A. Mitchell and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship wars are as old as the institutional church. The Acts chapter 15 Jerusalem Conference was for Jewish Christ-followers insisting that Gentile (non-Jewish) Christ-followers must “do church” according to Jewish synagogue customs which included the dedication of their infant sons to the Lord with ceremonial circumcision. Equally upsetting was when veils came off women and guitars replaced pipe organs for some praise in a Roman Catholic mass one Christmas Eve in Austria. What an uproar there was in some evangelical circles when robed choirs were replaced by praise bands with rock beat praise. The material is about a “worship war” within one segment in the broader Christian family. "ADO and PSALLO insists..." is the unique dialog between two major schools of thought in the Stone-Campbell Movement. This Movement is an American Reformation effort born in the early 19th Century. The movement's original design was to bring all sincere believers in the Lord Jesus into spiritual unity like has not been known since the apostolic era of Jesus' “community of faith” we know as the “church.” The original goal of this noble American effort was to get all who confess “Jesus is Lord” to acknowledge each other as fellow-believers or to at least respect each other as sincere God-fearers who reverence Jesus and His divine claims. The core of the Movement's vision was to recognize sincere believers in the Lord as being Jesus' “one church” above, beyond and in spite of all the divisive wreckage which all noble reform efforts and sectarian fanaticism left behind. Much of the theology of the Stone-Campbell Movement was born from the debate polemic, characteristic of the American political stage of the 19th Century. These forceful debates, engaged in by early Stone-Campbell disciples, were promoted as “contending for the faith.” While informed dialog is vital to the flow and formation of healthy and balanced thinking, staged debates have their down-side as well. As the Stone-Campbell heirs moved closer to the end of their first century as a definable movement, the dialog among them became increasingly contentious; more to prove others wrong that to mutually discover the Lord's revealed truth. By the 1906 United States Census, the more conservative wing of the Stone-Campbell American Reformation/ Restoration Movement officially announced a major earthquake which revealed the “fault line” in their movement. For all practical purposes, the praise-worthy anti-denominational, anti-sectarian “unity” effort of the Stone-Campbell Movement eventually fractured after that time into at least three new definable sects or denominations: “Churches of Christ (A Cappella),” “Independent Christian Churches or Churches of Christ (Instrumental),” and “Disciples of Christ.”The 1906 theological earthquake broke along the fault-line of a contentious spirit and biting rhetoric and very early centered on the question of whether praise in their congregations would be exclusively a cappella (unaccompanied singing) or could embrace praise music in many forms, including instrumental music. Much of the earliest rhetoric centered upon the different forms of two Greek words in the New Testament text: ado and psallo; the current discussion still breaks apart largely on meaning of these two words. This little book is drawn from contemporary dialog among several individuals identified as “ADO and ADO” and “ADO and PSALLO.” This contemporary dialog is a sincere attempt by believers within the broader Stone-Campbell faith heritage to pick up and continue their mutual attempts to “contend for the faith” of Jesus in its purest forms. This compilation of dialog on controversy surrounding Christian praise music derives from the past decade's venue for sharing postings on several different blog sites. This material is unedited except for the removal of personal identifying references, a few cases of profanity and other disrespectful name-calling.
